It was something that a member said in another thread

but why do women put an effort in covering up when they prey but when they are out and about they don't?

I guess because it is because god will not accept your prayer unless you are covered up !
While you are round and about, you are not purposely worshiping god…
I am not justifying why women don’t cover up, I know it’s wrong. But it might be a reason why they just don’t cover up when they are out.

Because one of the conditions of prayer is to cover all your 3awra.

If I were asked, I'd guess the main reason was that its not taken as seriously as when it comes to prayers. The 5 prayers are one of the pillars of Islam. I think they are given more attention and taken more seriously than when it comes to going out.
I'm not supporting anything here, I'm just expressing my point of view of what could be the case.

OK you got a point..... but how about flipping the coin and looking at the other side. To me a guy who shaves his beard is just as guilty as a gal who does not cover up (Hijab). Unfortunately, the society is still a testosterone society governed by male’s point of view; so all the testosterone ….oooppsss I meant blame is on woman. .

I dont see being beardless as being a sin.

Some girls don't take covering up seriously for some reason. And they just cover up for prayers cuz this is how it has to be done. but to think about it Islam asked the female to cover up not only when she prays but also when she goes out.

As for a guy having beard, well Fat man believe me I have seen men with beard who are worse than men without.. I in my opinion won't consider is as a sin, but again I would prefer a guy with beard then a man without... And Allah knows best..

First you said:

Then you said:

What does the society have to do with what you think?

when was it haram not to have a beard?

In the shee3ie sect, you are allowed to not have beard.

In the Sunni and Ibadhi sect, you must have facial hair (even if very light beard, not clean shaven).

you must? Whats the justification for this? Sunna perhaps?

It's sunna to have a beard. I don't think it's a must. That's what I know, anyway.

If its sunna to have a beard, how come its frowned upon to have long hair? Out of curiosity.

The Islamic Ruling Concerning Beards

Growing the beard is a wajib (mandatory) for all males who are capable of doing so. This has ample evidence in the Sunnah (as will be shown below) and is the unanimous opinion of the ulamaa of Islam. One should not be misled by the neglect to this sunnah by a few contemporary shaykhs, and by their providing shaky fatwas to support their action. By doing that they make people follow them into the wrong way, when the Messenger (S) said: He who starts a good sunnah (way) will be rewarded for it, in addition to receiving rewards equal to the rewards of those who follow him into it. Whereas he who starts a bad sunnah will be burdened with it, in addition to receiving burdens equal to the burdens of those who follow him into it. [Muslim]

Cut the moustaches and grow your beards. Be different from the Magians (followers of a religion that dominated in Persia). [Muslim]

Cut your moustaches and leave your beards alone. Be different from the people of the scripture. [Muslim]

What the `Ulamaa and Imams Say

All the `ulamaa of as-Salaf u- li, including the Four Imams, agreed that shaving the beard is haram (prohibited). They considered shaving it an impermissible mutilation, as has been reported about Umar bin Abdil-Aziz. They used to consider the person who shaved his beard effeminate. Many of them would not accept his witness or allow him to lead the prayers.

Well I know that it's not a must for Shee3ies, as I have lots of shee3ie friends. And you said it yourself it is mustahab and not fardh. So what's the problem?

I was answering PT, and as far as I know he is a shee3ie and asked us why did we say that it was a must.

And another question: now that we've established that it is, can someone provide me a convincing answer as to 'why' it is?

PT, read the link I provided, it's explained there.

You provided a source for the four sunni sectors in reply number 14, but you did not give us a source for the ibadhi or the shi3i sectors. Do you mind providing us with a source for both?
