I see that Iran's Islamic government is recognising people with gender identity disorders and allowing them to have sex-change operations and obtain new birth certificates.
How do Muslims feel about this?

Hmmm Khomeini allowed, that's why they want back valid the fatwa on Rushdie.
There was a thread about a case in Saudi too, a few months ago. Sensible decision (but it's not politics, is it? health or religion I would say...)

This doesn't seem ermaphrodite like saudi case.
Why is it disgusting Ta3jib? How would you feel if you were born a woman but with the wrong "equipment"? And aren't operations carried out all the time to correct other accidents of birth? I would commend the understanding shown by the religious authorities in Iran by allowing this. Please elaborate on why you oppose this?

gender disorders allowing them to have sex-change operations and obtain new birth certificates.
thats the key word it's not anyone who's a healthy male or female who goes and changes his/her sex it's the ones with a gender disorder
don't see anything wrong with that

There's nothing wrong about sex-change operations if they are for medical reasons..
I remember once when i was listening to BBC with my father, there was an interview with a kuwaiti "girl" who had a sex-change operation... it was so emabarrassing ..

Does anyone have the fatwa which the Mullah used in order to allow such thing?

Thread related to Islamic Sabla, Moved.
Allah made you who you are and you have to accept it. There is no such thing as gender disfunction. It's more like a mind disfunction.
Allah has created both sexes: males and females, and they are both highly respected in Islam, the religion that strictly abolishes gender discrimination. In Islam, man and woman are equals in the sight of Allah. Therefore, there is no justifiable reason for sex change operations.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, has invoked the curse of Allah, the Almighty, upon “a male who imitates a female or vice versa.” This Hadith is about the matters of dress and fashion, but it also explains the importance of gender in Islam. So, if an imitation in outward appearance is counted as a sin, then by Qiyas (analogy), a total change in gender will be even more sinful act.
It is not allowed in Islam to change the gender, and doing so will be changing of Allah’s creation.
Changing one’s sex is a kind of tampering with the creation of Allah and following the way of the Shaitan (Satan) who vowed that he would misguide the sons of Adam in this way and in others, as clarified in the verse: “And surely I will command them and they will change Allah's creation.” (An-Nisa’: 119)
The only exception to this ruling is related to a person who has both genders potential in body, so a medical treatment can be sought to unify one gender. In this case it will be a correction, and not a change in the creation of Allah, the Almighty. This issue has been previously discussed by our earlier Fuqahaa’ (jurists) and the same ruling has been given.
I disagree. If someone is born with their feet facing the wrong way round, medical science is now such that it may be corrected over time. Why not use that same power for good to change people who have been born with the wrong sexual organs? It's not about imitation, it's the opposite - it's about changing the aspects of the person that are AGAINST the gender that Allah has really given them.
People don't have sex changes for frivolous reasons. It's a long, difficult and painful process, not a bit of fun.

Yep 1 in 5000 births are born with congenital adrenal hyperplasia. which is the most common cause of ambiguous genitalia. And its more common in the offspring of consanguineous marriages. ( It would be interesting to see what would be the prevalence in the Gulf).
I agree with those in favor.. Imagine living ur whole life confused and then when u know that ur condition could be treated (although not entirely), ur told that u would go to hell if u had the procedure.
Its kinda selfish to say, since u were born with it, live with it.
I agree if its something like getting a nose job when there is nothing really wrong with ur nose. But to spend ur whole life confused, not knowing what u are. Expected to act one way when u really feel like acting the other way. Falling in love with the "wrong" gender.
Getting a sex change would give them a sexual identity, just like me and u. Could u imagine how hard it must be for them, especially in our communities!
Islam is deen yosr, not 3osr. It should make our lives easier, not harder.
