Islamic Relief Aid for Victims of Southern Asia Earthquake
The death toll of the southeast Asia earthquake has risen to 140,000 and may rise further. Aid agencies now face the biggest emergency operation ever mounted.
Islamic Relief is spending an initial €1,400,000 from its emergency funds to bring aid to the survivors of the disaster. Cargo-loads of aid have already arrived in Indonesia.
IR staff in Indonesia are distributing food, water, medicine, disinfectants and other non-food items to the survivors, and in Sri Lanka, the IR team is distributing hygiene kits, but much more is needed. Islamic Relief is appealing for €5,600,000 from the general public.
Devastation in Aceh
The disaster has paralysed Banda Aceh, the worst hit area of Indonesia. Infrastructure has been destroyed, and communications are down. Many villages in Aceh were completely wiped out by the tsunamis.
Staff working in Banda Aceh are completely isolated and face a five hour journey to Islamic Relief's field office in Medan. The same journey by truck takes 17 hours.
Islamic Relief Action in Detail
The first of four airplane-loads of aid bound for Indonesia and Sri Lanka has arrived in Medan, northern Sumatra. The first cargo-load of 72 tonnes of aid is part of a partnership with a US church group. The shipment includes:
18 tonnes of medical supplies
9 tonnes of first aid supplies
28,000 hygiene kits
18 tonnes of clothing and shoes
Islamic Relief staff are on the ground distributing aid to survivors in Indonesia and Sri Lanka:
Drinking water, oil, food, disinfectants and baby milk are being distributed to survivors of the disaster in Aceh, the worst hit region of Indonesia
Survivors are receiving cooked meals from IR staff in Banda Aceh
In the Ampara province of Sri Lanka, Islamic Relief staff have distributed hundreds of hygiene kits
Food packs for widows observing the 'iddah period of mourning are being purchased for distribution in Sri Lanka
Islamic Relief's partners in India are assessing the damage caused by the tsunamis
The victims of the disaster need food, water, medical supplies, tents and sanitation facilities, please donate generously.
