View Full Version : Forms Of Oppression?!
When the government, or men of the country force women (arab & muslim) to wear the burqaa or forbid them to wear heels because they make noise and attract attention.. and other things; do you consider it forms of oppression and unfair social control? Are you against such rules or do you think that its all part of one whole = keeping women out of the sight of men to stop sin?
Its a form of oppression if the women being told to do so, MIND.
in my opinion i dont think anyone should be told anything. Its everyones right to have a freedom. but sometimes what a government does for a country is something thats beneficial for all of us.
look at the amount of rape claims, suffering of women, divorces etc happening in countries where women have been given so many rights. Dont you think the same would happen to our women if they were let loose?
But rape statitics in places like Pakistan are no better Abs!
And what do you mean "LET LOOSE"???!! Women are not animals

I meant giving the complete freedom to do whatever they like, even to the point of showing of their bodies by wearing skimpy dresses.

Yes to both questions (you sort of directed the questions there Engy)
If men really want to stop sin then they should start with themselves and not carry ''great value'' (for lack of a better word) when a women wears high heels, wears makeup or even put a clip in her hair....etc.
I mean how bare should a women become to be acceptable to men around her? and even then she is not safe from preying eyes or other crimes committed against her appeasing self
fatamooo 01-12-04, 06:35 PM i think its wrong - women shouldnt get naked of course, i totally disagree with girls showing themselves off too much - but i also really disagree with them being FORCED to cover up, especially to the extent of burqa and no high heels. everybody is free to wear what they want, but they should know that if they dress provocatively they are partially responsible for any unwanted attention from males.
Scorpio27 01-12-04, 06:41 PM I just hate such inhumane rules of the certain countries.
State has no right to interfere in human life unless it’s vulgar.
Burka and heels has nothing to do with Islam.
It's the trick of men to supress women.
I had few threads where i furnished these kind of injustice to women.
:) You must be annoyed EMa? Sorry for the rude truth!
Pineapple Thief 04-12-04, 06:14 AM Opression has no benefit, and only breeds negativity and contempt. If we do something, it should be our choice. And thats where education comes in. Educate ourselves, then educate those around us. Only those things that are harmful to others should be banned. Forcing ppl to wear the hijab for example benefits nobody.
remember in the US when the banned alcohol? that was a smashing success, im sure.
Arabian Princess 09-12-04, 10:27 PM well if you are asking women to do that in a country like UK for example, that would be a clear cut opression.
but when the country's culture is like that, its not called opression in my opinion.

Tunisia, France and some other countries forbide the wear of hijab and anything related to religions. Is this a sign of oppression. I think a woman so as the man should have a choice, but in the other hand, if a person was found not to obey "Islam as an omani", s/he should be punished. Meaning, if a woman did not wear a hijab, she should be punished same as drinking alcohol and other forbiden stuff. What a choice :P . The UK are planning to ban smoking in most of the pubs. They banned the selling of alcohol after 11pm. Is this oppression?

Do you mean, a person may walk naked, rape women and kill people.

What are women rights exactly. Islam gave both genders rights and limits. I dont see what you mean in this "women have been given so many rights".

Are you hinting on permitting the selling of drugs, alcohol, casinos and night clubs. There are limits that the government has to make. Some of these limits you find absurd others you agree with. It depends on you personally and the society you are living in.

Discussed this before. :)

If you are giving an islamic statement then please prove it. If you are saying that "Burka and heels has nothing to do with islam", then am waiting for you to prove it. From Allah said and the prophet said.

It benefits the leaders. Remember that leaders are responsible for us in jugdment day. If there were no such rules, then the leader will be asked about it. Its his mistake and its his responsibility

I second this opinion. :)

Am I the only woman insulted by this statement?
Abs, are women given so many rights now or are they given rights that they were denied a few decades ago? A woman is equal to a man and NOT an inferior being.
look at the amount of rape claims
So you mean that rape has increased because women have rights, or that the amount of REPORTED rape cases have increased because women have rights to speak and are encouraged has risen?
suffering of women, divorces
So you are saying that women decades ago who were abused or cheated by their husbands and suffered emotionally stayed in a marriage are happier than woman nowadays who have the right and are encouraged to walk out if they are unhappy?
if they were let loose?
Let loose? Why what are we animals that need to be controlled? And by whom? Men ! Believe me Abs, women have more control over themselves then men!
I am a human being who has been gifted with a brain and for that I will control my actions. I am not inferior to some man.
Dont you think the same would happen to our women if they were let loose?
I think that when women are given the rights that they denied and let 'loose' they will be happier, and men like yourself can't get away with sexism, rapists can't get away with rape, abusing husbands can't get away with abusing their wives.

The way you phrase that: 'some man'. Is this an insight into your subconcious I wonder. :hmm:

LOL, Thiefie, I was just really annoyed the way he (a man) referred to women as being let 'loose'. :mmhmm:
I know you're cool Mr. Thiefie and don't think like that.
Pineapple Thief 10-12-04, 03:55 AM I didnt say I think like that, Im bringing it to attention so that you clarify it for all members of sabla.
:)
One hot day in Bangkok.......I was sitting in a cafe chatting with these two Arab guys from Kuwait.......and these two typical European ladies come walking down the street our way......looking very summery......tank tops..shorts......long legged and full busted.......yeah sure.....I thought, NO BIG DEAL!!!!!!
The Arab guys sitting next to me went 100% ballistic........and they became very excited and started talking in Arabic very quickly.....
Some 3 minutes later some Arab girls came in the coffee shop.....who were dressed in Abbaya.......and hajib........and came to their table......with tons of shopping bags......as one young lady passed by we made eye contact.......and I almost dropped to the ground begging for someone to put me out my misery......she was the BOMB>>>>but the guy's paid very little attention to her.....
I was thinking why they can't see what is in front of their eyes????
Anyway.....whatever floats your boat......mine seems to be leaking....
fatak

I think it's unfair for the women of the country to make the men be the primary bread winners ... I think it's oppressive ... still you don't see me complaining when you guys are popping out babies and being domestic engineers after having your government/parents slave over paying for your higher education.
I think the day women take full responsibility of all aspects of their lives (and they should be allowed to) will they be treated with total equality.
There is a trend towards that in Oman (so its all good), and every female should thank her lucky stars she was not born in Saudia Arabia.

fatamooo 10-12-04, 12:49 PM aww fatak!! some men are not deep enough to look further, and do not have enough imagination and insight to look beyond the surface and the blatant exhibition of skin :p...

no, I think its more of what you get used to. People who are not used to see a girl fully covered and see an eye of that girl, they would see it as something exotic and would get attracted to it, while those who are not used to women who are uncovered would find uncovered women attractive!
