My laptop fell down. :( My DVD drive is now... well it makes all those noises when I put a DVD in to start, but it can no longer play the movie.

You guys any idea how much it costs to repair this part! Coz clearly it's a mechanical problem!

Which brand of laptop do you have? and whats the model?

(sorry to hear about this terrible incident :( )

I think the problem is with the driving time running functionality. I don't think it is a mechnical problem rather than it is physical one. Maybe the reading laser is not performing well !!

It really depends on what is technically causing your DVD ROM making those noises. You might need to replace a broken part or something. Can't telll untill you can know what is the actual problem. BUT, I don't think it will cost you more than 30 R.O

Take it to the place where you bought your laptop from and if your warranty on the DVD player still holds, you just might be in luck ($$ wise). Otherwise, you might have to get a new DVD player for your laptop.

So, what model is your laptop and when did you buy it?

This is my laptop model link (http://www.vaio.net/models/notebooks/z1/) it's a Sony viao Z1.

I bought it in Dubai Shinoda, but it's over a year now, so warranty has expired!

I don't want to go all the way to Dubai. :weep:

Fast Hacking, I think you are right! Coz it's working when i put the DVD in, but it does not read it! "Maybe the reading laser is not performing well !!"

The laster detector most probably be broken. I dont think it could be fixed, not in Oman and even if its fixable it will be better to buy a new one. :)

A normal DVD is cheaper than a hard drive. Maybe Fast_HacKinG knows the price. :)

Normally on such occasions, the price to repair would exceed the actual price of a new drive.
I think you better visit a sony dealer with your laptop so they can tell you what exactly you need to do regarding this. But i guess you'll need to change the whole drive.
Thats if only the drive is malfunctioning from the drop.

Just buy an external DVD player and hook it onto your laptop when you want to use it. lol

I want it to be an INTERNAL DVD player. To replace exactly the one I have now.... I know know, to ask.... but It'll be around 2-3 weeks before it gets to Dubai.

Are you sure that your warranty is just for one year?
If thats the case, then yes taking it back to dubai would be the best choice.

sophis^catrina: Why dont you contact or let someone contact the Sony dealer in dubai. Check if they have it avaliable. And the next time you come back send it to them or take it. Thats the best official solution.

Otherwise, seek a local shop that can handle the whole thing.

Having an external DVD for a laptop or even an external CD burner is a much preferable solution for laptops, because the internal ones use the CPU load too much when playing such and such, but in my opinion, the external ones use less load on the CPU.

Plus, she does not need to be carrying her external DVD player outside, as would be watching movies or using it in public?

I would totally agree with EarthQuake, the laser bulb with no doubt broke, as it is very fragile. DVD players, for laptops are not that expensive these days though. Just make sure when you buy a new one, to buy something compatible with your laptop (something which will get stuck inside your laptop, instead of having it smaller in size or larger in size)

I personally wouldn't want to have an external DVD player for my laptop.
It is true that the main reason for many to have a DVD player is to watch a movie using it. However, thats not the sole reason for having a DVD player on your laptop.

If you gonna keep having external hardwares for your laptop then i can't see the reason behind having a laptop. DVD player/burner, external network/wireless card, external bluetooth adapter, external infrared adapter... etc and the list goes on.

The only reason i can see for having external hardwares is that you are willing to use them on other laptops or desktops.

Take it to a Sony authorized dealer/repair facility. They will open the laptop and replace the DVD/CD-ROM device.

I hadn't seen this model before. It looks like a beautiful laptop computer.

Oh! Didnt get you the first time... I thought you were mentioning how much the Hard disk change cost you... Am not sure how much the fixing will cost, cause we didnt go through with it. As the device was too expensive.
