View Full Version : moving back and forth..
A silly question but I want to know if there is an explanation to it...
You know the move people do whenever they read Quraan, going back in forth in a motion. sometimes exagurate and do it persistingly. I can't explain well but i hope someone will know what i'm talking about.
My question is why do that happen, like what does into our mind or why most people in every religion do that when reciting something holy?
Personally I don't know why some people do that, no logical explanation.

i actually think its cuz they dont want their legs to go to sleep!!
or to keep themselves focussed on what they are reading..

Najah, I do that in my prayer when I am sitting down, because it makes me have better concentration. When I am sitting in one position, and maybe there is some sounds outside, i loose concentration more.
Perhaps its an unconscious rhythm your body makes to be in sync with the tarteel you are doing. I don't do it when I pray, but I've caught myself doing it whilst reading Quran. For me, the movement helps absorb what I'm reading.

It is mainly muscle relief, because the body tend to stiffen while remaining in the same position for a long time. Then it turns into imitation of others, and belief of benefit.

Easy reason dear.
Because of monotone.
Monotone Sound or utterance continuing or repeated on one note without change of pitch.

It happens to them while somebody tries to memories his lesion for long time, especially while reading a bit louder, quickly and continuously.

Why ppl do it...
I think it helps in keeping the rhyme on and also helps concentration since by the movements more blood circulation can be achieved!
I dont want to sound strick but...should we stop doing it? The reason is; Jews do the same thing when they read Tourah and there is a hadith by the prophet SAW which says "be against the acts of jews and christians"..i'm sure some of us knows this hadith!

I've caught myself doing that while reading Quran once..I stopped doing it because I don't want to look like a Jewish fella
not only jewish people do that, even budhist when they read they do that, I think Haroundb's and Hasanain's answer seems logical to mee but again whenever you think about it, when you read a normal book (not related to religon) and you stay in the same position reading it, you don't do that? Why is that?
It's for the consintration, i think thats also logical..
Interesting, anyone with any idea?

Dear Najah, i don't fully agree with u. You know there are lotz of people who studies specially memorizes their lession by a rythm and melodious nature and the do the sweeing thing.
It's natural while you do such monotonous melodious study, some singers too do that while the song make them do that.
Thanks

And please, don't try to make the thing miraculous and blessing thingy. There is no place for superstition in Islam.:)

God bless your heart MR.. That was totaly beyond my thoughts. Don't Assume that you know what goes in people's mind or read in between. It's very clear from my post am looking for a logical reason behind this. :bored:
It could be probably a reflex action your body is doing..this reaction is due to your deep concentration on the reading.

Different people do it for thier own reasons. I actually can concentrate reciting Qur'an while standing (Praying) or sitting without moving back & forth. In this way, I could memorise quite many long Sura's in the Holy Qur'an alhamdulillah.
Wish the best for all...
