found that on another thread...
which leads me to asking.. is it haram to masturbate?
can't it be considered as overcoming a sin?

Supposed to be haram. But on the other hand, it's better for a person to masturbate than to indulge in pre-marital sex and perhaps a girl getting impregnated.

THIS IS RAMADAN dear
we better talk after Ramadan ;)
As long as the threads is discussed in a serious, scientific & religious matter then I don't have a problem in keeping it open. :)

NK, in reply to your question:
There is one verse that we would use as a source for the ruling on masturbation:
“Those who guard their sexual organs except with their spouses or those whom their right hands possess, for (with regard to them) they are without blame. But those who crave something beyond that are transgressors.” (Al-Mu'mun: 5-7)
By some scolars, masturbating falls under the category of the 'except' mentioned in the verse. To others, it doesn't.
I've posted this in detail before but here it is again:

I think the general opinion would be that only under certain circumstances is it permissible; mainly fear of commiting sin.

Why would I lock it when the whole topic is about 'masturbation'? Don't be hatin' man .. life's too short to be a hater. Hope you realize that sooner, before its too late! :)

I think you have a point, it may reduce perversion, crime and sin.

If this topic doesn't require some urgent answers, I agree that out of respect, it will be maybe wiser to wait until Ramadhan ends to discuss about it more deeply.
In the time being a similar thread was opened in the Health Sabla and can be viewed => Masturbation (http://www.englishsabla.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12001&highlight=masturbation)
Xpress; the girl is asking for further knowledge in Islam her religion. I honestly don't see what Ramadan has to with locking it :os Au contraire; she should be praised for seeking answers and wanting to know more about religion!
We are not discussing the acts of mastrubation; but the Islamic ruling on it. I've never been taught to be shy of certain topics during Ramadan so I don't understand why some people want to lock this. He, Allah SWT praises those who are eager to learn more; it is an obedience to Him and he is rewarded for it.

^^^ I agree with Enigma.
I'm a Master Procrastinator ... hmmm ... maybe this isn't the right thread.
Or to quote "The longer the act is delayed, the greater the pleasure derived." - Lao Tsu.
Seriously though ... religion aside ... if you repressing your urges ... than you are probably damaging yourself on some level which will make you a poor individual, citizen, member of society, muslim, etc.
And if you act on your urges in a blatantly 'sinful' manner (ie sex outside of wedlock) than you are definitely NOT being religious about it.

As far as Islam was not clear enough about it, then it comes under the debated subjects in Islam. And as far as Muslim scholars didn’t agreed on one answer for it then it would be something infantilized and stops at the point of your decision, to do it or not.
When we talked about smoking, we found that it is very easy to close the subject of debating and to include it in the “forbidden” list, because there are lots of harm in smoking and there is no good about it that we can negotiate for. But for masturbation it is different. Some people came to claim that it will stop them from committing “Zina” adultery. Others see that it will not harm in any way if it is practiced in a moderate way. Then we have here some good reasons not classify it as forbidden and this is why it is considered as debated subject.
Then what is the reason some people consider it forbidden? One reason is that committing such a habit mostly leads into more deep addiction to it, and this is a big deviation from the norm, which leads men to the easier way for their sexual satisfaction, and to ignore the main goal of sexual desires in humans which is (breeding). The idea is that, as far as you have the desire, you have more power to achieve. So if this desire is correctly implemented, it will help in acceleration of efforts to achieve the most natural course of this desire which is marriage, and if it is wrongly implemented it will lead to “masturbation”.
Another reason we consider it “forbidden” is that mostly this masturbation habit happens amongst teenagers and youngsters who were involved in many ill sexual habits like watching porn and physical pleasures and interactions (but not intercourse). This type of people who are mostly seeking an Islamic grant of its legibility to relief their feel of guilt.
Others say that there is no excuse to commit this habit, because Allah did create us with the automatic relief of this pressure by having (wet dreams). This eliminates the need for such a habit and grantees a fair level of pressure inside us. This was taken as a good reason to disapprove this habit, that as far as it is automatically relieved why should you force it to happen?
So I think that there is no reason that we should accept this habit until all the procedures to avoid it has been done:
1-Close your eyes from erotic scenes (honestly this is the most important thing).
2-Stick to good friends (even talk will make you imagine).
3-Be close to Allah (think of Him watching you).
4-Feeling power? Start fasting (Islamic suggestion for power consumption and spiritual elevation).
5-Get yourself busy with something (mind occupation, empty minds are more into wrong deeds).
6-Be more socially active (relatives, good friends, gatherings,…etc.)
7-Take a cold shower (shock your sensual system).
8-Avoid spicy food and food that arouses feelings (food has a relevance).
And really I think that if someone did these things he will not even think of doing such a bad habit, and he will start looking at it in a different manner.

As for posting things in ramadhan, i honestly don't see what the big deal is, im not implying that i or any others do it, but only as an inquiry for the sake of finding out about the truth! thx! :)
