Is Shaitan really locked during Ramadhan?

There is something which really puzzles me every year at this particular time and I hope you will be able to clarify my doubts....

I understood that during the month of Ramadhan, Shaitan is kept locked and the Gates of Hell are closed. Now if this is indeed the case, how can we explain that there are still so many sinful acts or deeds committed (from muslims and non-muslims alike) during the holy month?

XP, the scholars have different views about this issue and in the thread Ramadhan Q & A I posted an answer about this (below):

And the views are as per the translation of below arabic text:

1. Some of them say that the shyateen are not strong or faithful in their mission to divert the muslims during Ramadhan as they do in other days. Because muslims will be busy with fasting and reading the holy Quran.

2. And some say that the is one type of them which being locked which are called in arabic "marada".

3. Some of them say it's a sign for angels to enter this month and stop the Shyateen from harming people, and it may mean that the increase of good deeds and rewards and affect of shyateen on human beings will be less and will be liked locked.

4. And some of the scholars say this is something "Ghaibi" which means only know by Allah and better not to go deep in discussiong it we just have to accept it.


على كل حال بالنسبة لتصفيد الشياطين فلاهل العلم كلام في هذا:-

فمنهم من يقول يحتمل أن يكون المراد أن الشياطين لا يخلصون من افتتان المسلمين إلى ما يخلصون إليه في غيره لاشتغالهم بالصيام الذي فيه قمع الشهوات وبقراءة القرآن والذكر

It simply says:

Scholars have different opinions regarding this issues.
- some say that Shaitan still exists but because muslims become busy reading Quran and praying and all the good deeds, they become less influncial.

- some say that they are actually locked

and its said, its better not to go discussing this in detail because its from the '3aybiyat (unknown).

Allah knows best and if anyone who understands arabic and thought I understod this wrongly please help.

Man has evil within him without the motivation on the devil. It is the weak and ill natured of Muslims who are the wrong doers during the Holy month. Allah has given humans the power of recognition. The battle between good and evil will always remain in them till they realise to follow the true guidance of the word of Allah.

From what you all post, I can conclude that there are different interpretations among scholars and not any clear answer.

1. Some of them say that the shyateen are not strong or faithful in their mission to divert the muslims during Ramadhan as they do in other days. Because muslims will be busy with fasting and reading the holy Quran.I can partly agree with that, eventhough I know some muslims who commit serious sins during Ramadan (expl: stealing, cursing, not fasting at all, not praying at all, drinking alcohol, commiting adultery, killing etc...)



2. And some say that the is one type of them which being locked which are called in arabic "marada".Thanks for this info and I am wandering why, at least during Ramadhan, only one type is locked and not all of them? If that type belongs to a strong category, which would make sense, how come there are still major sins being committed? What is the point of loking one type of Shaitans, if some obviously even more powerful are still kept 'loose' :lost:



4. And some of the scholars say this is something "Ghaibi" which means only know by Allah and better not to go deep in discussiong it we just have to accept it.I think it is okay to accept it without too much discussions, if there is not many clear exemples around us going exactly against what was revealed.

XP, committing a sin doesn't have to be due to infulence of Satan, remember that each human being has a good and evil side in him/her. And human beings have a free will, when a person commit a sin (e.g adultry) it means he/she is not a believer at that time.

The type which is being locked which are called "marada" are the most powerful type as I know.

Coincidentally, I just read a fatwa about this around a week back. What it basically said was that the hadith meant that with all the good deeds and blessings of the month; it creates a barrier between the devil and those good people. His influence over the obedient is greatly decreased.

Few days ago, this question came into my mind, and i kept thinking about it for days..

but now i got some kind of what i would call an answer, but not really a full answer from this thread, but any way there are alot of things that we are not been given a 100% explaination and we have been asked to believe, which is somthing accounted to the Almighty, and his Power.

Same thing here, and just wanted to add that we stand a better chance in this month (Ramadan) better than the rest of the year.

Although devils are chained during Ramadan, it is no wonder to see people committing sins in broad daylight because not all sins are committed as a result of Satanic whispers, but one’s evil soul or nafs may drive one to sin and even commit crimes.
Thanks in particular to Enigma for the islamic link she gave here and which helped me to understand better this subject.

I think I still have to be able to differenciate Shaitan and the evil within one soul which I thought was also part of Shaitan, but which in fact seems to be a separate element.
