Busniess my friend Omani King , and somehow social gathering seems to be in large in Ramadhan.

i honestly don't see what the big deal is about.. its the same reason why u see an increase in "ramadhan promotions" and raffles and draws, and chances to win stuff and sales!! its almost EXACTLY the same thing! :)

Well, Oman being a country which is predominantly muslim, you'd expect owners to take some responsibility. Sadly, if alcohol was allowed to be sold on the streets, im sure most of them would sell it, because money would roll in.

you should blame all those people who smoke and not the cafe's who provide it. if there was no demand then they wouldnt offer it.

I hate all types of smoking anyways.

No one would offer anything if its not on demand. Offering "sheesha" in ramadhan proved to be a good business in the past years and it will continue this way until there is no demand on it. Which is something i dought!

Most young people have nothing to do in ramadhan other than going to a cafe, playing cards, sheesha, eat and watch tv.

I think they should ban it during Ramadhan if not all the time. If they want to smoke dirty things they can do it in their own homes not in public! :shoot:

Well icetea, i don't smoke at all but the places that offer sheesha are known. If you don't like the smell of it or cant stand the view of it then just stop going any where near there.

I don't mind sitting with people who use it as long as the smoke is not in my direction.

Oman stopped the sheesha thing for a while a couple of years ago. But why did it come back?? :scratches head:

ur right kaza it stopped and they started arresting people who sell it, but it was allowed the begining of last year again by some minister  i dunno why?!! :lost:
im alergic to its smell and as icetea said it should atleast be banned in ramadhan.

they come in several flavours like strawberry, apple, honey, mint and alot more!!

but its a very large metal pipe with a small pipe coming out f it (which u put in ur mouth)!!

the imam today in the jumaa prayers was talkin bout the khiyam and what was the meaning of it in the prophets day. and its the opposite of todays meaning!!
coz the prophet used khaymat ramadhan to make plans for jihad in allah's will!!

Dorella,

It's a big metal water pipe (bong to you ;) ), in which you smoke fruit-flavoured tobacco or in some cases, a really strong honeyed tobacco. Naturally you could smoke hash in it too, but that's not what people are talking about here. It's very popular in Egypt and the Levant, and probably originated in either Turkey or Iran.

I have several of them, but don't really use them these days. I do go out and smoke sheesha sometimes with friends, especially during Ramadhan when some places bring in extra ones to meet demand. The big hotels have to close all their bars during the Holy month, and do big Ramadhan buffets and tents outside with sheesha instead. The one I usually go to (for the bar or the Ramadhan tent depending on the time of year!!), Hotel Intercontinental Muscat, is currently getting 700-1000 people every night to eat, drink coffee and smoke sheesha in the garden.

I know some people have storng feelings about smoking. I think it's evil, even though I do it! But people do it all year round. What strikes me as weird is that Ramadhan is the busiest time for ill-disguised lotteries in Oman and the GCC. Gambling is supposed to be illegal, but there are loads of "prize draws" around dependent on purchase, which amounts to the same thing, and about ten times as many in Ramadhan.
