View Full Version : Male Nurse?
I'm sure quite a few of you have seen the movie Meet the Parents where Ben Stiler plays a male nurse. If you did, you probably also saw the part where his girlfriend's family all laughed at him for his chosen profession.
Would they have laughed if he were a woman? Never. Its commonplace for a female to play the role of the assistant; the nurse, the secretary, the receptionist... etc. When we laugh at a male nurse we are being sexist & discriminating.
Perhaps the job itself is unmanly because it involved taking the orders of someone else and doing the smaller jobs whilst men are usually tackling the harder, rougher jobs. To me, there is nothing wrong with that but to many society members its just weird to meet a guy who says he's a nurse. I would probably show an expression of surprise but only because its uncommon for a guy to take on a role that has historically been given to women.
So let me ask you...
~ Do you think its unmanly to be a nurse? (Guys, would you consider being a nurse)?
~ If a guy nurse came to ask for a girl; what are the odds of the parents refusing him based on his job?
~ Is it narrow minded of us to be sexist about male nurses or is it okay because its something history defined and continues to be the idea?
Wardat_il'7leej 16-10-04, 11:15 AM I think it was just the concept (just for a laugh) in the movie but i think the general consensuses is that its acceptable for both sexes to work and perform the job of the other.
i dont think a male/female workplace determines his/her worth to anyone!

not that its unmanly .. but its known that women are more sensetive than men .. women would "generaly" care better for a patient than a male nurse .. but I a man told me he is a male nurse and he loves his profession, I would have high resepct for him!
~ If a guy nurse came to ask for a girl; what are the odds of the parents refusing him based on his job?
Depends on the education of the parents .. I know my parents wouldnt base thier approval on a guys job!

its not about being narriw minded .. its because the nature for both male and female .. females are softer than males .. which automaticly give them more ability to care for patients than males.

I don't think that's the reason, the reason in my opinion is that women are more caring than men so that's why they are the one who'll fit for such jobs.

It's not unmanly, it's so humane.

The idea of a man working as anurse is still new.

I agree that some ppl are narrow minded.

Not at all... its an essential job in the medical field. Yes, commonly its known that females take this job, but for a guy to work as one is totally normal. If I was in the medical field and didnt want to be a Doctor, then for sure the option of being a nurse would be huge.
~ If a guy nurse came to ask for a girl; what are the odds of the parents refusing him based on his job?
If a guy comes to propose, while he is working in a decent job; there shouldnt be any problems with it. It all depends on the mentality at this point. But technically, there is nothing abnormal about it.

I believe its quite narrow minded for sure. History is something and following the wrong ideas coming from history is another thing. Following without thinking is the issue here.
I think its quite sad that some people would label some jobs as in more suitable for men , or women. I think any job can be done by any person from either gender as long as that person has a passion for it and is actually up for the challenge.
anyways.. i dont think its unmanly to be a nurse , in fact i know many omanis here who are studying to be male nurses in oman..and its actually quite refreshing to see some choosing professions which are out of the box.
I wont be surprised if in oman , some parents would refuse a man cause he's a nurse . if he's decent , and can support a family then they would have no excuse to refuse him.
*NK 105* 17-10-04, 02:11 AM i'd be surprised if there was a male nurse at least in oman that wasn't being made fun of.. especially if he was Omani..
but no1 should be refused marriage based on a nurse not being the suitable job for a guy! at least he's not a crack-addict or anything!
Blue_Chi 17-10-04, 02:48 AM I won't laugh at a person because of the work that he/she does. No matter how silly it might sound, at the end, it is a job; it is an honourable way of MAKING A LIVING.
I 'know' a guy who is working as a nurse in Oman. I would personally never think of it as a career, but at the same time, it never came across my mind that this person is doing a job that he is not supposed to do. The stereotyped idea of this certain job worldwide would probably be related more to women, but in the real world, where you live in a community where people have no choice but to work in the available jobs, topics of this sort, where a man should not work as a nurse, become a luxory that the nation cannot offord to talk about.
amo_l_oman 17-10-04, 02:51 AM Everything new and out of stereotypes seems strange in the beginning, also in the real world...

No really Enigma, a soldier takes orders all the time, does that mean his job is girly? ;)
No, I don't think that being a nurse is unmanly. Its a VERY humanly job. IMO, nursing is the most unappreciated job ever.
Unless the parents are THAT dim, i doubt they would refuse.
I don't hold anything but respect and admiration to nurses, male or female.
fatamooo 17-10-04, 09:24 PM It's not unmanly at all for a man to be a nurse - but I think the name used for the occupation is perceived as feminine; nursing is what women do for babies, and women usually care for the sick while the men are at war, plus the fact that it was a woman who actually made it a true occupation (the florence nightingale story)...
If the parents refused the man because of his occupation, then thats really silly - a man's choice of career says a lot about him, and for a man to choose to want to help the sick back to health, and care for them, shows a great deal of compassion in a man and an ability to recognise another person's needs... what woman wouldn't want that? and what parents wouldn't want that for their daughter?
Yes, it is kind of narrowminded, but I think in general people are beginning to open their eyes more and examine all the stereotypes and question them, so pretty soon inshalla it won't exist!!

1- i dona think working in any job is wrong as soon as this job is a good one ,, and even if we used to have female as nurse because of the kind and soft of female which can help thgem alot in handling this job much better ,,, but its not wrong to have male also ,,, everybody can do any job as soon as he/she have the ability and the inside strong to do it ,,,
2-as far as he love his job and proud of it ,, am sure gona accept him ,,,
3-ya ,,,, many people are narrow minded ,,, and many the do following without thinking carfully about any thing

1- Ofcourse NOT..why can't a male be a nurse..this profession is not made for women only but most women are intrested more than men but that doesn not however mean it's unmanly at all
2-why would the parents refuse??? It's just the same as a secretary or a muwathaf working in a ministry...A nurse is just as good as any other profession
3-Yes i personally think it is considered to be a narrow minded person who thinks that a nursing profession is feminie and I will find the individual narrow minded if they were sexit about it.
