well do you have a router or hub?
well make the host the windows xp, after it's done it'll ask you if you want to make a network disk click on yes and then follow instructoins that will be given to you and use the network disk on the client pc

the eastiest way is to use a small hub and connect both computers to it (also it is the expensive approtch, but it allows for future growth).

but if you want to connect the computer directly (peer-2-peer or crossover) then you will need to use a Twisted Cable ( http://www.ertyu.org/~steven_nikkel/ethernetcables.html and http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/cable/index.htm are both good at showing you how to make your own cable  ). Or you can just buy a Twisted-pair Cable from any computer shop (should be very cheap, less then 1 R.O).

it seems that your problem might be that both computer can not see each other, getting the hub/switch or using Twisted pair Cable should help you over come that problem,

good luck

Since the case is between two computers, so I dont think the hub or router is needed. As SpiritSeeker said you will need for a twisted pair cable.

Myself, I am doing this all the time, sometimes its really taking time to setup them. But, they are always working at the end.

After connecting the two computers using the cable, try creating the connection between sepreatly!

I am sure it would work by following the right steps. I would help you more. But, right now I am not using my personal computer.

I tried that a long time ago, but windows 98 doesnt open the net wizard when I insert the disk inside it, i tried it with 2 pc and the same error occured, its like n error msg that sez that the pc will shut down if I continue to use the program
btw, i'm using a small cable between the 2 pcs, does it matter anywayz ?

You Can Use Cross-over cable to connect two PC's, Off course UTP cables.
If you had BNC ports on the LAN Cards you could use Coaxial cables.

If you Have the tools You can make the CAble by UrSelf:

You Can get help : How-to: Do it yourself Ethernet Crossover Cable (http://www.makeitsimple.com/how-to/dyi_crossover.htm)

The way you connect the PCs is the most important part of all, as it will declare which type of configuration you need to establish.

So by small cable you mean??? Is it a cable connected to the network outlet on both Pcs?

And also try to add the IPX protocol that might increase the chances of the two Pcs to connect.

How far these two PCs from each other?

Then you can go for Parallel connection using either parallel cable or USB cable depending on the availability of the ports in your PC.

Scorpio27 and DD have given you excellent information.

IMO it's better to just buy a cross-over TP network cable rather than to make it.

Verify network cards are installed and drivers loaded.

Connect cable.

Configure TCP/IP:
assign 192.168.1.10 to one computer and 192.168.1.20 to the other. Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.

Ping each other from command line.

As most said above. Since it's between two pcs only you just need a twisted pair cable. Routers and hubs are not needed for this.

what if they wern't in the same room? i've bin thinking of doing the same at home, but one is downstairs, and the other is up in a bedroom on the other side of the house..
would it still be possible?

*NK 105*: yes of course its possible..

You have two choices:

1- Go with the wiring, as you will have to drag the cable all the way from the two rooms.

2- Go wireless, as you will only need 2 wireless pci cards and maybe a wireless switch...

Yes, and wireless is a preferred solution in this case. So you only need 2 wireless adapters.

Surely wireless is preferred. As it gives you a future plan once you decide to have wireless internet access from anyspot at home.

You'll only need a wireless accees point for that. Normally, combined with the xDSL modem.
