Is it true that when you commit a sin, or do something "mean" "bad" or "wrong"... God sometimes punishes you in life for it instead of the hereafter?
And if so, after getting punished for it in life, would you be totally forgiven?
Well for the most part I don't think we should believe god is punishing us when something bad happens; we should all just accept it as something meant to be, from allah and with plenty of patience.
However we've all heard about the many stories from the Prophets times when god punished their tribes for some sin or another, so instead I would say yes its possible but you should never have the attitude that 'god is punishing you' in the face of a problem.
And yeah, I think that if He punishes you once, that its enough and you wouldn't be punished for it again. In Allah '3afoor ra7eem.
Wouldn't this be better off in Islamic Sabla?

there are some things that happen to me, that make me think i am being punished, like for example if i said something bad about someone behind their back - and then one week later i heard that someone said something about me, i take it as a sign that if i dont like it when its happening to me, then i shouldnt do it to other people!!!
but like enigma says, not for every bad thing, like if i get a bad grade in a quiz - God isn't punishing me... i punished myself for not studying hard enough, theres no one else to blame but me... in those cases

I think you quoted it very well by saying sometimes, i deeply believe in it as i believe in the saying what goes around comes around. My deeply believed example is when people accuse others without any prove or false accuse.
Totally forgiven? Allah A3lam, we never know, I don't see how or why it should be forgiven after the punishment here, Hamdulila, i agree that allah subhanahu wataala ghafoorun raheem (forgives) but without them realizing their mistakes and tawba i don't see how it can be forgave easily like that. Dunya punishment is nothing. (personal opinion!)

Personal Opinion:
I believe that sometimes we are punished in life for our sins, I think its done to see if we embrace “twba” and stop doing those sins or continue. Does that mean we are not going to be punished after life? Allah knows best……..Doors of “twba” are open to everyone, and we are always given chances, and ways to look back and recognize our sins.
well i think that when we do something wrong .... then Allah may punish us here to show us that what we've done was wrong and that we shouldnt have done it.......... and i think it's really good this way because then we would have time to fix things ........
