View Full Version : uni majors + careers
*NK 105* 28-08-04, 12:36 AM ok so a friend of mine is going to thanawiyah, and she's considering to be a phsyciatrist.. do u think she could have a career in Oman?
Nobody knows what kind of jobs are actually needed in this country, so that the youth of today could act upon it.
Pineapple Thief 28-08-04, 01:42 AM Now, Im not sure whether its psychiatry or psychology that requires a medical degree. I assume its the former. That means 6 or 7 years at SQU. After that, she would have to do some work experience before selecting her speciality. Generally not many of the new grads want to be psychiatrists, and I think there will be some sort of demand in the near future. So Im sure it wont be bad at all, considering its medicine!
Of course I could be completely wrong, but I doubt it :) You better ask thug4life, or Dr.N. They are the ones in this profession (medicine, not psychiatry, as far as I know).
*NK 105* 28-08-04, 01:58 AM so you think that there is a profession for her in oman? do u think omani families would come forward with their problems?
Well I always wanted to (and still do) do psychology. I've heard the only options are working in the research department in SQU or being a psychologist in a company (they use you to hire ppl and determine who's good and that sorta stuff).
CrazyReD 28-08-04, 04:51 AM Yeah I do think there's a future for her I know some people who go to phsyciatrists best of luck =)
What i know is that the Ministry of Higher Education conducts a research every year across the ministries to find what majors are in need. The scholarships fields given by the end of the year to the graduates are the result of these researches.
So basically, what you see in the scholarships paper is what is currently in need in the government sector.
Arabian Princess 28-08-04, 10:11 AM Personaly I think all majors have places here in Oman, the only thing you should do is not choose a very narrow major where you can work on one field.
I mean think about it this way, Maybe it wont be so popular NOW or after 5 years but Oman is still a developing country, sooner or latter there will be demand.
Psychology is a very wide area .. and I think its promising!! Medical psychatric is not the only field .. you can work in schools, universities (and now many are openning up), ministries ( social affairs, dont know national economy but economics is very tied to psychology.. etc) Dont think of it as a Now thing, think of it as a future thing .. for sure you dont wanna do something you hate just to get a job!!
Omani King 24-09-04, 12:12 AM ur right AP but the problem is tht no 1 is sure if there would be a demand here in oman!!
I very much agree with Arby.
Blind Melon or Kitkat should help also. I think once one of them mentioned that their father is a psychologist/psychiatrist something in that field so...
*NK 105* 05-10-04, 11:02 PM what about other careers? (for the rest of us)
some friends of mine still arn't so sure of what they want to persue as a career and a major.. myself included .. i just figure that business admin. as a major.. come back and there will be a job for me here.. cuz every company needs a finance department, or banks need bankers..... thoughts?
CrazyReD 05-10-04, 11:11 PM Well everything runs on computer these days so a major in a computer related field isn't bad but you have to consider that alot of people are studying that.
When I was working in Oman Arab bank 2 summer ago the marketing dpt told me that there arn't many pure Omani marketrs in the field

GIS is in demand from what i hear
Linguistics, I'm so interested in this field and i wish if we can see more Arab linguistics :D
*NK 105* 07-10-04, 03:53 PM ... what is GIS? and what is linguistics?
CrazyReD 07-10-04, 10:39 PM gis = Geography information Systems
How come I haven't seen this thread before?!! :os
Oh well, anyway, PT was right. With psychiatry you need to get a medical degree first, and then specialize in that area. We have a behavioural department in SQUH, and we have a number of psychiatrists over there. Plus we have the behavioural science department in the college itself.
I think that the demand is increasing, in this area, but remember that psychiatry is different from psychology. Psychology can be studied on it's own and it's probably a 4 years major.
*NK 105* 08-10-04, 01:27 AM i havn't heard of many psychologists around, or psychiatrists either for that matter!
