Yes, coming each 2 or 3 months to Oman, i noticed the phenomena has increased and though i never had the chance to talk with these boys just observed them: is a phase of life we all went through, the role model thingi and has nothing to do with east or west, simply is a need while growing.
They found rap to fulllfill their needs, it could be anything else, anything which shows to the others what you are and what you feel simply cause these others, the so called old mature and wise, wouldn't notice you in the mass.
