View Full Version : Beggars
Last time I visited Muscat, when I was with friends in the CBD area, a man came to us, and said "Could you please help me? I ran out of gas, and I need to reach home, I'm from Nizwa, please someone help me, I need some money to fill in some gas", I heard this, and I thought oh' you poor thing, and I gave him some money, which I think was sufficient for him to get the required gas.
Later, with the same friends, I went to Sheraton Hotel and I found him in there in the bar. He was drinking and was dancing with those Chinese chicks or prostitutes or I don’t know whatever they are.
Later the next day, a man stopped his taxi and a woman got down from it, she rang the bell, at the time I was in the balcony, having a chat with my cousin, and we got down to see what was going on. The lady said we are from far away from the regional area, I just ran out of milk for my daughter, could you please help me? So my cousin went and got her some milk from the refrigerator, but the lady didn’t accept the milk, she said some money would do! My cousin said sorry we can’t help. Later the neighbor’s daughter came in to visit my cousin, who was studying with her, and told us the same story, about a woman and a taxi.
However, such events took place many times while I was there.
Well the questions are:
-Would you ever give the beggars money if s/he wasn’t convincing?
-If you do, don’t you think that would encourage them in doing it again?
-Is there any law against this in Oman?
-What about charities, aren’t such people getting the social benefits from the government in Oman?
Woah!!! 23 views, and not a reply as yet!
Is it really that we don't like to show the negative parts of our nation?
Arabian Princess 26-07-04, 10:46 AM this thread was discussed before .. but no harm in discussing it again.
I see them around and I think its not a good view .. after all many of them are not in great need but begging is an easy way to get money.
The story of milk proves something, if she was really in need anything would seem of value to her .. but she wants money, and begging is an easy way.
Just saw this thread today. I see many of those specially where we live. Once I saw 2 of them (non omanies) with strollers and their kids. We went to my sisters's house and when they saw us one of them took her kid from the stroller and came to us saying that she is poor and doesn't have many and came from another country and bla bla bla, but we didn't have any money so I asked my nephew to five them some food which they didn't want.
I mean if they had the money to come to Oman, and had the money to buy nice outfit and to buy srtollers how come they still ask for money..
and last week 3 omani women came to our house asking for money as well. Some of them wearing gold bangels.. :bored:
I say we should not give money to them as it will just encourage them to ask for more every time and they will get used to it and come every time.
Pineapple Thief 28-07-04, 12:19 PM Ive seen some around. A story that one of my friends told me is that he was in Al - Hail and some guy came to him and asked him for some money cause he was really hungry. So the brother offered to take him to a restaurant instead and feed him as much as he wanted. The guy refused, and just said he wanted money instead. the brother concluded he was a druggie and refused.
Yes, it happens. And its got to be stopped. However, we have to bear in mind that there are lots of real poor people in oman, lots, and so we have to keep our eyes open to distinguish between them and the fakers.

That is why I was asking isn't there a way of charity through banks in Oman? Or the government social benefits?
I was praying in Al-Arami Mosque a few weeks ago, and on my way out this women who carried a 1 year old girl in her arm and another kid age 5 walking behind me approached me and asked for help, I just said Sorry and walked away as i was in a hurry. As soon as I got into the car, I saw her running after the men at the mosque asking them for money, EACH ONE OF THEM HELPED HER, she was running from one person to another and all of them helped her, and I was really upset.
Did you guys know that there is a HOT LINE to call if you find beggars? the number is 794949. I called them and I told them what i saw and were I at that moment, i gave them the women's specifications and the kids (she was from Palestinian/Jordanian from her accent). They also took my phone number and 15 min later i got a call asking to describe her again and i told them they said they had cougher them.
First of all, if she was in real need of money how on earth did she enter the country? These people have more money then anyone of us. I heard the program on the radio the other day saying that these kind of people live in hotels and drive fancy cars etc. and that we should call the police whenever we find a beggar and I’m going to do it again if I see one.

Good on you Some1..
Well I heard that such people are taken care by some agents who bring them into rich countries for such things, and moreover they have got commissions on their what they get on daily basis, might this be true?
