Reading the Sex Education thread yesterday, my attention was caught by some questions (view here) a member kindly sent to DrN (http://www.englishsabla.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=365704#post365704 ) and which involve child rape.

~ I am interest to know if rape exists in Oman, if it is reported and what is the sentence for such a crime in this country?



I never heard yet of any case of child sexual abuse here, but this doesn't mean that it doesn't exist at all in Oman.

~ Do you know anyone who has been molested (or sexually abused) in Oman, if it was reported?

even if it does exist.. I doubt anyone would hear about it. People like to keep quiet about such things and not talk about it at all cause they fear for their reputation.

the real question should go like:

Where on Earth it does not exsist????


the other better question can be:

If we talk about rates and statistical figures...do we have it and does it show any rise?

The only story i heard of rape was a few years back when those four sisters claimed they were raped by their boyfriends... it was all over the newspapers.. but after medical check-ups turned out they weren't :p
...dunno how longs the sentence.

Yeah... actually i heard a few stories... but they werent reported to the police... only the parents.

How about domestic rape? I know it does exist but how can we stop that?

Naby, don't you think that if someone has a friend who went through such experience that she or he will not talk about the existence of rape?

Secondly, do you think that it is better not to talk about it, simply because the victim or the parents of the victim are afraid of their reputation?

A woman from the CSI thing came to our school a couple of times. She showed us many cases of crimes - some with pictures! It was really interesting... and now I know that this country covers up everything to give us a false sense of security. There was one case, happened MANY years ago, where a 13 year old girl was raped and killed (In the Dakhliya). So yes, some cases are reported.. maybe just the ones that end with death?

I don't know anyone who has been raped, but I am sure it's happening around. I think people should report these cases instead of keeping quiet for the sake of their freakin' reputation, while the criminal gets away - with a very clean reputation I may add. :barf:

I have no idea abt what punishment do they get. The only way in which we can eliminate this problem is when people are educated and told abt it in schools, made aware, are greatly encouraged by the media to report and thus will feel safe to actually report a rape case.

Its interesting when you hear about all these cases, and how they find the criminals and stuff. You're obviously thinking of other things :rolleyes:

As thug said, where does it not exist? Hell, I even know a guy who got raped. Well, people say he got raped. Whether he did or not, he deserved it :sorry:

K..Yeah RAPE does exist in Oman...and the law does have rules in ruling a crime of rape.

And do I know any case?
Well yes I do know a case whereby a young guy was raped by another guy who was older than him, in which case the young guy reported it to his dad..and then it was medically checked ...you know some steps undertaken immediately after the rape were necessary to first prove that rape had really been there!!! It was proven and the raper was questioned...all the necessary steps were taken and it ended up in the court where the raper was sentenced for a while.

Sentence is the punishment for the raper unless there is an agreement between the raper and the raped person or his agent to deal with it differently.

Also sentence for such crime is not stated, it is however depending on the crime's nature, the effect on the raped person, maturity, and any other circumstances.

Another thing to add, rape exist widly in secret and it can be scilenced either by threatening or giving money or the like.

Probably. Probably not. I didnt like the guy very much either way. Its probably all bull anyway. You know how easy it is for rumors to spread. Either way, It didnt affect me much.

Xpress I'm surprised at you! The REASON its underreported here is BECAUSE people don't want to talk about it! Its an embarrassing ordeal for the guy, psychologically speaking he'd probably feel as if he was less of a man (or something along those lines). For a girl its "3ar", its a shame on the family. If they report it there will be many suitors who will reconsider marrying her because she is not a virgin! This is how Oman's society works. Pity it is the way it is, but reality bites. I guess its not as bad as Pakistan though where they kill the girl cause SHE got raped :duh:

I know a lot of youg boys get molested in school. For some it happens so early they don't understand what has happened to them, therefore wouldn't know how to talk about it.

As for girls, if it happens it most likely happens in the family. One of her uncles or cousins will rape her.

A sentence? I guess they just send them to jail or something. But how often does that really happen? 1. hardly anyone reports a rape incident. 2. if they do they need, per islamic law, 2 witnesses (four if they are women). Now honestly, is a guy gonna rape someone in front of two people? And if he did are they going to confess? I doubt it!

True it's jail or something...but the law implements such thing! so we call it sentence and it is usually between 2-5 years sentence, yet this depends on the case, the effect, and sadly the tribe!! (get what I mean,,,), so you may not be sentenced at all if there is someone pushing you from the behind...or you maybe sentenced for years!!...

Regarding the witnessing point...they dont do it much anymore..as I said above... they depend much on medical test for a prove.

I know a girl who've been repeatedly abused by her servent when she was a child , when she grew up she told her mom , her mom was in denial and disbelieved her claiming it was all in her imagination :fire: !!!!!! The Hurting part is the servent continued working there till later on he was fired (Wajid 3alihum) when other members of the family knew. It took her 20 years to get over it switching from one psychiatric to another But now alhamdulilah she is happily married :) .

x-press - if gays and Lezbians exist, for sure those other factors exisits big time.

I was once very close in getting raped, but i suppose the angels were right there when I needed them! :angel:
