MUSCAT — Seven people were killed and two others injured when two speeding cars swerved off the highway at Maabelah in the wilayat of Seeb and smashed into a row of roadside commercial establishments yesterday evening. The fatalities included some of the occupants of the vehicles, as well as customers sitting at tables placed outside a coffee shop hit by one of the cars. Among the dead and injured were members of an Omani family travelling in one of the vehicles, and expatriate workers dining at the cafeteria.

The mishap occurred at around 7.15pm at Sheradi where a wadi intersects the highway at Maabelah. Witnesses said both vehicles involved in the crash were travelling on the southbound side of the carriageway in the direction of Seeb. Suddenly, one of the cars veered off the road and careened into the Zuwaina bint Sulaiman & Sons Trading Coffee Shop, popularly known as the 'Maabelah Juma Restaurant'.

It finally came to a halt after flipping over on two cars parked nearby. Close on its heels came the second vehicle, which also damaged storefronts and parked cars. Both vehicles ended up in chunks of wrecked metal, with debris strewn across a wide area around the accident site. Authorities later carted away the larger pieces of wreckage, it is learnt. The Maabelah Juma Restaurant took the brunt of the impact from the first vehicle. Smashed masonry, furniture and glass littered the storefront where a handful of customers were earlier tucking into snacks and tea, witnesses said.

The second vehicle also barrelled into an adjoining commercial establishment, which was unused at the time of the crash. Local residents said the shop was being converted into a restaurant. In addition, two telephone booths installed outside the premises suffered some damage as well. Several electric poles in the vicinity of the coffee shop were also damaged in the mishap, while some overhead cables were cut. Emergency crews cut power supplies to the area and later began replacing some of the damaged poles. The Royal Oman Police, which launched investigations into the mishap, has urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and other traffic regulations.

From what I hear they were racing. Both drivers survived. They're going to have to live the rest of their lives with this guilt.

Hopefully they will be put on trial for unintentional murder of all the people they killed.

i know both of the men who are responsible i am assuming the white turned over car is a caprice am i right?
He was with his family (his wife and 2 kids) they died and he is in hospital.

The blue car is a Mercedes CLK or shall i say was..he is out of hospital with just a hand injury but i thought he was alone.
He and the owner of the white car know each other...i still dont quite understand how this accident happened..

I suspect a drag race; more so if under the influence of alcohol. I mean, I have a hooked up Honda accord coupe and every once in a while I burn the road from one traffic light to another ... controlled conditions though.

Speed thrills, but kills ... sadly, they learnt it the wrong way. As Muscati said, I hope the faulty driver be punished ...

It's about time the seatbelt law in Oman is expanded to make it compulsory for all passengers in the car to wear seatbelts. They should also make it the law that kids who are too young to wear seatbelts must be kept in child seats in the back seat.

We are losing too many people in car accidents. The drivers have a better chance to survive because they're the ones who get the benefit of seatbelts and airbags. It's the ones in the back seat who suffer the mostl.

F@ggot(s) who are too busy trying to 'act' like men, and have not the social and civil responsibility of actually being men need to be punished with the full measure of the law - when they endanger their families or themselves only it should still be considered as crime against society in general ...

the ones in the back not wearing their seat belt do suffer, and causes the driver and passenger to a much greater threat, since they would use the force of their body projected by the momentum of the car and hit the front seat... causeing the front seat to crumple even more...

the cabrus SS is said to hit an electricity pole from the top... it must have been flying...

What I heard is that two cars were on the main highway speeding and one of the cars accidentally touched the other at a high speed causing the driver to loose control and fly off the bridge hitting another car on landing and causing all other damage after.
Innocent people were killed due to the negligence of the driver
