Christians believe that woman must have her hands cut off for touching her husband's genitals when she touches them in an effort to protect her husband from an attacker) "When men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets: then thou shalt cut off her hand, thine eye shall not pity her" (Deuteronomy 25:11-12).

Do you think this punishment is fair?

Am not sure about this one .. but if she tries to pull something funny and hurt sorry ladies "my third leg " then cutting off her head wouldn't be enough of a punishment. :6:

No. Another reason why I'm not a Christian.

One difference though - I don't know any country that carries out this kind of punishment in the name of Christianity. I do know that Saudis chop off people's limbs in the name of Islam at the Chop Chop Square in Riyadh on Fridays. It’s a spectacle that people, especially foreigners, are encouraged to watch.

Raed her intention is to protect his parts and not to pull them :D, remember she is his wife.

Well the Islamic punishment for people who steal is to cut his/her hand.

WRONG again, Icey.

Christians don't follow the Judaic Law that you describe - Deuteronomy is part of the Old Testament. Christianity is all about release from the minute laws governing behavior of Jews as described in the OT.

You won't find a Christian in the world for hte last 2,000 years who believes that women should have their hands cut off, or be stoned to death for working on the sabbath, or any of the other OT stuff.

According to a thread by Monotheism a few months ago, Jews can't practice these punishments either as long as the Temple in Jerusalem isn't re-built...

This is another case where the archaic laws of the bible were never really used. When they were, we called them the DARK AGES, and are highly embarrassed by the actions of our forefathers in it's name.

There is a difference between what is there, and what is enforced. I've never heard of a single case, anywhere of old testament punishments actually being done. Have you?

Ice Tea, you posted this like you think you know what you're talking about, but didn't take the bible quiz. C'mon expert, take the quiz.

Re "cutting off the hand":

According to traditional Jewish interpretation, this is a figurative expression for a financial penalty.

Since the funds for this payment would come from money that she had earned by working, it is as if the "hand" that brought her the money is cut off.

(The Jewish Sages understand the expression "an eye for an eye" etc. in the same way.)

The case here is that the husband was not in mortal danger, and so the wife's action was uncalled for, because she embarrassed the assailant, and embarrassing someone is a grievous sin.

Historically, no Jew ever kept this literally, because it was never meant literally.

Who follows the Torah and who follows the Old Testament?

Only the Jews follow the Torah--Christians claim that it was abolished, so they surely don't follow it.

Good post Mono. That's a very good point. Literal translation and implementation, and those that understand meaning.

Like when my son was 4, I looked at him when he was telling me a story, and I said, "Get out of town". He started crying saying he didn't want to leave home. It's an expression, not to be taken literally.

Are some like children that take a literal meaning when it's not meant to be? What a sorry state of affairs.

indeed! :)

this is yet another example of how the Oral Law is vital to understanding the Written Law, and was in place from the outset

Because of the general and vague expressions often employed by the Torah, interpretation is obviously essential and must have been applied since the Written Law was first revealed at Sinai.

It surprises many people to learn that G–d did, in fact, explicitly and unequivocally appoint interpreters in the Torah itself:

“Appoint for yourself judges and police in all your settlements ... You must do as they tell you, carefully following their every decision. You must keep the Torah as they interpret it for you, and follow the laws that they legislate for you. Do not stray to the right or left from the word that they tell you.” Deut. 16:18;17:10 11

Thus, the Jewish Sages were granted sole authority to interpret the Law.
