Okay well I don't know much about this; just touching the very surface of it.

I started to read one of his books two years ago (or more?) but I didn't get very far. I've been reading Ibn Warraq's book now and he mentions him alot so I'm getting interested again.

From what I know; he wrote a book that degraded Islam and infurated muslims to the point they wanted to beat him up.

I just want to know what exactly the fuss was over, and your opinions on it?

Ibn Warraq ? Why I am not a Muslim ?

Read that book a couple of weeks back.

What an excellent and interesting read.

I dont know much about it either .. but from what I know ..
he used a verse in Surat al Haj, and made up a story from that about Prophet Mohammed (peace be upno him) that was offending.

offending.

the important question for muslims is: was Rushdie's offence religious or political ?

He must not be a very good writer if it took him a whole book to get to this point.

I can usually manage it unintentionally in 2 or 3 posts.

Free Speech

"Nowadays . . . a powerful tribe of clerics has taken over Islam. These are the contemporary Thought Police. They have turned Muhammad into a perfect being, his life into a perfect life, his revelation into the unambiguous, clear event it originally was not. Powerful taboos have been erected. One may not discuss Muhammad as if he were human, with human virtues and weaknesses. One may not discuss the growth of Islam as a historical phenomenon, as an ideology born out of its time. These are the taboos against which The Satanic Verses has transgressed (these and one other: I also tried to write about the place of women in Islamic society, and in the Koran). It is for this breach of taboo that the novel is being anathematized, fulminated against, and set alight. . . ."

- Salman Rushdie

Religion of Peace

"I inform all zealous Muslims of the world that the author of the book entitled The Satanic Verses--which has been compiled, printed and published in opposition to Islam, the Prophet, and the Qur'an--and all those involved in its publication who were aware of its content, are sentenced to death.
I call on all zealous Muslims to execute them quickly, wherever they may be found, so that no one else will dare to insult the Muslim sanctities. God Willing, whoever is killed on this path is a martyr."

- Ayatollah Khomeni

Yes and no. I've found many to be caring and kind people. Many are terribly superstitious and afraid. Many are very well educated and I envy their language skills, yet at the very same time they are often intellectually stifled when it comes to history, archaeology, religion, etc.

Are you going to lock this thread too then ? Or must I create new User ID's and post ad hominem attacks on those whose positions I disagree with first to give you the excuse ?

The fuss was over Rusdie's reminding Islamic scholars about a longstanding claim that a change had been made to the Quran.

The following lines are believed to have been in the 53rd sura of the Qur'an, between 53:20 and 53:21 :

"Have you thought upon Lat and Uzza, and Manat, the third, the other?' . . . 'They are the exalted birds, and their intercession is desired indeed.'

They were removed and a claim made that Satan had tricked the Prophet into writing them - though it should be "speaking" them as most Muslims beleive the Prophet couldn't read or write.

whence did you come with that information about the 'sura' Wandy ?

give us source of your quote ?

Those who read Rushdies 'satanic verses' say the author criticised not only Islam but even the then British PM Margaret Thatcher was difamed by him in the book. What did he say about the jewish :D

Again I ask the same question. Was author's known world wide because of his views about Islam or it was a political case that 'famed' him ?

The book was no big deal ... not even a good seller until a price was put on his head by the Ayatollah of Iran.

It sold like hotcakes then and that is when he became famous ;)

I think the Ayatollah was getting royalties ...:p
