Why does the US remain a Christian nation while Europe has abandoned the faith, along with its will to live? It is not only because Americans are different, but also because American Christianity is different. It derives from rejectionist English Protestantism, whose two defining acts were to translate the Bible and to destroy sacred images. England's reformation began with John Wycliffe's 1382 Bible translation. His followers baked their bread on fires fed by portraits of saints. The 16th-century Protestant mobs that ripped sacred images down from church walls in the Bildersturm did more to bring about the American Revolution than the bullyboys who dumped tea into Boston Harbor in 1775.

It is a commonplace that Bible translation was a cornerstone of modern democracy, which sprang from the premise that every man must read and interpret Scripture for himself (Mahathir is right: Jews do rule the world, October 28, 2003). But iconoclasm, the destruction of sacred images, was no less essential.

What the hell are you people talking about? Shamsery, are you on drugs?! Your post makes no sense!

There is no "American Christianity". Immigrants over the past 500 years have brought their own faith, from every corner of the world.

Besides, Mel Gibson is Australian.

jews:rolleyes: No comment necessary, look at the source.

You guys are so IGNORANT sometimes, I am losing my patience with both of you!!!!

Well you are free to do so, shamsery and silver_ring, but I refuse to worship Mel Gibson as the new god.

I suspect silver_ring is right about the jews doing something - darn them, they are always doing something.

I hear Mel Gibson made a movie. Apparently it is becoming quite popular.

I smell a sequel - Passion II ?

Correction, MG is a US citizen. Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson was born on January 3, 1956, in Peekskill, New York, USA as the sixth of eleven children to parents Hutton Gibson, a railroad brakeman, and Ann Gibson, who was born in Australia and died in December of 1990. Though born in the US, Mel and his family moved to New South Wales, Australia when he was a boy.

I stand corrected, Mel LIVES in Australia as his country of choice

Accuracy is important, even when unrelated to the topic ;)

Nah, might see it on video later as it's supposed to good drama...

I can't even imagine sitting in a theater surrounded by hundreds of emotional, sobbing Christians :yuck: :shut:

I imagine we'll rent it when it's released on DVD. We probably shouldn't let Faith watch it - with all her talk recently about the "Dawn of the Dead" remake I fear she'll expect Jesus to return from the dead seeking human flesh and brains.

Sad as it may seem, Moonie and I have not been to a movie theater since Braedon was born.

I'll be on the lookout for the open ends and under developed subplots that hint at a sequel:

Passion II
The Shroud
Son of Christ
The Bride of Christ
Christ: The Revenge

etc.
