View Full Version : What is the differnce between the hub and the router? namo 08-01-04, 07:56 AM I am waiting for your answer? jack 08-01-04, 08:12 AM What is a hub? A hub is a device which allows you to connect several computers in order to share a single point of access to a network. A hub receives and sends data packets which contain the destination address, packet order for assembling the data back to it's original state at the destination and the last is the actual information itself. What is a switch? A switch is similar to a hub in that it enables a user to connect multiple computers to a single point of access. The difference between a hub and switch is that a hub transfers packets to every computer on the network and a switch only transfers data to specific computers. Switches speed up data transfer since they do not require to use up bandwidth sending packets to unnecessary location. What is a router? A router can be used to connect multiple LANs or connect a LAN to a WAN. A router is smarter than a switch or hub. A router takes the destination address portion of the data packet and determines the shortest path to send the data on. http://help.sasknet.com/faq/what_is_network.html#network Scorpio27 08-01-04, 09:15 AM Jack explained it nicely hope Namo is clear with the devices.
