well just a thing I heared some time back and wanted to make sure from a jew or somone who knows about Judisim so much.

Is it true, that when a Jew woman married a non jew .. the children are automatic Jews. While, when the opposite happens the children are not Jews?

Yes, for a person to be jewish he must have a jewish mother. That's why you see it in movies that mothers get upset when their sons want to marry gentile women, it's because their grandchildren won't be jewish.

This should help:

"Q: My father is Jewish, my mother is not, I have always wondered what that makes me.

A: According to Halakhah, anyone who has a Jewish mother is considered Jewish, even if the father is a Gentile. This has been the general understanding in the Jewish community for centuries."

I'm not jewish, but my understanding is that it is derived from the original jewish tribal tradition that inheritance passes through the female line ... I suppose the underlying reason could be that you always know who your mother is, but you can't be sure of the father?! I'm sure no jewish scholar would agree though :p

Arby I heard that too but after looking it up it seems the narrations of that Hadith are very weak and there is a saheh hadith which states the opposite :

'Verily, a banner will be raised for the treacherous person on the day of Qiyamat and it will be proclaimed, 'This is the treachery of so and so, the son of so and so.' (Sahih Bukhari Hadith6177) (Note that the masculine tense was used for the parent of this 'so and so'.)

I am an Orthodox Jew. One of the reasons given for this Jewish law is:
We see that the makeup of the body also affects the person's character traits, to a significant extent.

The entire embryo is shaped from an infinitesimal drop into a developed body by the mother alone (and during the period of pregnancy--it eats what its mother eats, and drinks what its mother drinks) so much so that we see openly that the spirituality of the mother (and whether she is joyful or in fear, and the like) influences, and also forms the character of the embryo, which will then be born, with the Creator's blessings, healthy and well.

I'd never heard that - it's an interesting concept :)

Genetically speaking, a baby is slightly more related to the mother through inheritance of the mitochondrial DNA, plus as you said the nutrition and emotions of the mother help shape the baby :)

As I said above, it's one of the reasons given--there are others too.
