View Full Version : Zakaa Q&A
Arabian Princess 15-10-03, 12:07 AM ok, I guess most muslims know what is Zakaa.
It is one of the five pillers of Islam.
Scince Ramdhan is cominig, I thought of having this zakat questions. Whoever has any concerns regarding zakaa we could search for the answer and try to help each other.
Hope this thread would be educationoal :)
H-Highness 15-10-03, 03:07 AM I have been paying zakaa for quite sometimes but I'm not really sure what if its correct or not and I asked two different knowledgable people and got very confused answers. Here again,
Is Zakaa paid on income or saving ?

Arabian Princess 15-10-03, 08:56 AM thanx Jack for the information, they were indeed useful :)
HH, first of all the money that you have have to complete one year before it is zakatable. one your monthly income, I would guess you put it in an account, and use draw continiously from it and the next months income comes by. so, this amount doesnt survive for one year.
However, if you have a saving account, that you started saving before one year, then your saving account is entitled of zakaa.
Allahu alaam, this is what I understod.
shamsery 15-10-03, 10:14 PM Complicated and controversial issue.
sanwin25 16-10-03, 06:15 AM You seem to have decided to post single line responses.
Keep at it.
So you will post nothing.
Guwantanamist 17-10-03, 11:32 AM As usual ... excellent subject princess.
Here is a breif about Zakat, I hope you all make use of it and that those who did not start giving zakat would start giving zakat from this year.
I will put it on points to make it easier to understand;
1) You assign a month where you plan to give the zakat in. Best month is in Ramadan since the Baraka doubles, but you can chose any other month.
Anyways the month you chose will be your reference point
2) When Shaaban comes (the month before ramadan) you start counting your money and all the things you own that zakat should be given for (gold, silver, business, ..etc) if it reached the minimum amount where zakat should be taken out from it.
You count everything you have, wheather it completed one year or one month, it does not matter as long as the total of what you have has reached the minimum amount.
3) Now Ramadan came and you already counted your money. You should now give your zakat.
These are the general steps to be followed when giving out zakat.
One may ask that for example you counted in Shaaban an amount, then in Ramadan you spent some of the money, do you have to pay zakaat for that spent amount of money ?
The answer is no you dont have to.
But what if you got extra amount of money after counting and before ramadan, do you have to include it in the Zakat ?
The answer is a yes to this question.
Now the details of the amount is too complicated, maybe Princess can help us out with some answers;
1) What is the minimum amount of money you should have to start paying zakat on ?(If money then please clarify the amount in RO)
2) What are the things you have to pay zakat for ?
Guwantanamist 24-10-03, 12:16 PM Still waiting for an answer :)
Arabian Princess 24-10-03, 11:32 PM I was quite busy last week ..
soory about that gwan ..
if you have the answer .. can you give it plz?
Muscati 24-10-03, 11:40 PM Here's a question
I have a standing instruction on my account that when my salary comes in every month, immediately an amount equivalent to about 2.5% of the salary goes into a 6adaqa account which my mother controls for giving to the needy. In addition, whenever I am paid a bonus or increment I immediately give a part of it for 9adaqa. Do I still have to give zakaa? The way I see it, Zakaa is supposed to be on money which has been with you a year, but I give the same or bigger amount from my actual salary, not the money which I've saved up.
Arabian Princess 24-10-03, 11:56 PM mux, there is big difference between zaka and sadaqa ..
scince your intention scince the begining that the money you send is for sadaqa .. then i dont think you can consider it zaka ..
zaka is on the money you have for one year .. so if you have any thing thats zakatable I think you need to pay for it.
allahu aalam .
Muscati 25-10-03, 12:00 AM Ya3ni if I change the way I think and start telling myself that the money I'm giving away is zakaa and not 9adaqa then that's ok?
That doesn't make sense to me. If I didn't put that money aside every month and pass it on to the needy then I'd probably never give any money away at all because usually I spend all my money by the end of every month.
Inzain, next question.
If the money I'm saving is for a specific purpose, mathalan if I'm saving up to get married, or to go study, do I still have to pay zakaa on that amount when a year passes on it?
Arabian Princess 25-10-03, 09:42 AM Mux, before paying zaka you have to understand why are you paying it ..
the money you pay every month is volountary .. you chose to pay it for sadaqa and Inshallah you will get a great reward for it. If you decided one day to stop paying it, its also up to you.you will loose the the thawab you are getting only.
This could clarify to you more: here (http://63.175.194.25/index.php?ln=eng&ds=qa&lv=browse&QR=9449&dgn=4)
zakaa is compulsary as long as you have the amount to be paid. you are only sparing 2.5 % of the amount you have!! like for example, if you have 1000 rials you are only paying 25 rials!!
as I know that even if you are saving your money for a certain purpose, you have to pay zakaa .. allahu aalaam
mux, if at the end of the month, you are spending the whole money and it all comes in one account, then the money is not zakatable.
Exp: I get 500 rials that comes to my x bank account. Every month I spare 100 rials for saving in another accout. The amount in my x account is for spending .. so at the end of the month I may have something left and may not have until the salary is transfered.
If the year passed, and I have 400 rials in the bank account, according to my knowledge the amount is not zakatable because the money is not new and have not completed 1 year. Plus, you are using it.
Some scholars dont consider jewlery that you are using as zakataable though I beleive it should be because the main point of zakaa is to help people.
allahu aalaam, and I guess if you are still not sure you better ask people of knowledge.
Guwantanamist 25-10-03, 08:34 PM If the year passed, and I have 400 rials in the bank account, according to my knowledge the amount is not zakatable because the money is not new and have not completed 1 year. Plus, you are using it.
Check this please !
Arabian Princess 25-10-03, 08:54 PM I asked around, and this what I was told.
Guwantanamist 25-10-03, 10:22 PM Are those who you asked Thiqa ?
Arabian Princess 26-10-03, 08:47 AM Do you have another answer regarding that gwan? coz if you have plz put it here ..
Well I asked again .. as I understod as long as the money is used .. then its not zakatable (as the example mentioned above) but because zaka is considered as a good thing, there is no hard to remmber what was the amont that was last year in Ramdhan and pay zaka for it.
allahu aallam
Shinoda LP 27-10-03, 02:09 AM Give whatever money you want man.
You have a thousand restrictions on when, why and how to give 'em too?

I have a doubt in this as Guwan. If this is true then everyone will transfer some of his money to another account and will say this is for spending. Money is money wheather you keep it in a bank account or keep it in "mandoos". If a year passed and reached the "ni9ab" then the muslim should pay zakat.

yes exactly!!
but what if he have in that account less than what he had last year?!!
I mean, for example, you have an account where your salary comes. End of the month, you usually have nothing in it!! because you spend it on home, rent, loans ....
The money did not reach "ni9ab" because it finished!!
However, it is always good to be in the safe side, pay the money and Allah will always reward you back.
Shinoda, you can whatever you want when its sadaqa and any time on the year ..
zakah is something differnent, its like an Islamic tax (though it not like that exactly) that is paid yearly once.

It doesn't matter if last year is less or more than this year. Two rules:
1. One year passed.
2. The money reached "ni9ab"
Then pay zaka
Personaly I pay the zaka on 20th of Ramadan.
Question:
If a person owns a pice of land, does he pay zaka for it and how to calculate the amount?
Arabian Princess 27-10-03, 10:06 AM the point ice tea, its not the same money .. the money you had last year .. you finished it on other things .. this money is this month salary!!
lets use gold example, for example you had a neclace last ramdhan .. after two months from ramdhan you gave it to somone as a gift .. you dont have it anymore right?? but one month before next ramdhan, somone bought you another neclace .. do you have to pay zakaa for it??
so the situation:
1- it didnt reach one year with you
am trying to search for your question .. didnt find the answer yet .. :(

AP it doesn't matter if it's new or old money. Lets assume that you paid last year zaka in 1st day of Ramadan and you had in your account that time 3000 rial. Now during the year you make new money you spend some of it and some will be added in your account and lets assume you added 2000 rials extra, so you end up having 5000 rials as of today (1st day of Ramadan). Now you don't put a yellow sticker in the 3000 rials from last year and you say today is first orf Ramadan so it means a complete year passed for the 3000 rials so you pay zaka for only this 3000 rials and you don't pay it for other 2000 rials which some of them completed lets say 7 months and some completed 2 months and some completed one month only. When you want to pay zaka you should pay it for all the 5000 rials as what you have today in your account.

In this case you add this new neclace to what you have existing of other gold, if the total reach the "n9ab" and it's already passed a complete year since you paid the zaka. Then you should pay zaka. The point is you don't pay zaka for each single item separately, but you add all what you have and pay zaka.
