View Full Version : Cutting hair?
Libellula 29-09-03, 07:07 PM Is it haraam for a woman to cut her hair?
I recently wanted to chop it all off but wasn't allowed to because it's "tashabboh bil rijal" (imitating men).. is this true?
How short is a woman allowed to cut it? Any specific length?
thanks.
go on phoenix do a Sinead O'Conner.

Wardat_il'7leej 29-09-03, 08:16 PM Muslim women are not allowed to shave their heads or to cut their hair in such a way as to resemble men. Otherwise, it is not haram for them to trim their hair to make them manageable or healthy. It is not allowed for Muslim women to go to male hairdressers and as a general rule. The prohibition of women making their outlook like men's and vice versa is mentioned in several hadiths by scholars.
Cerulean 29-09-03, 08:22 PM I was hoping I'd chop it all off at the end of the school year... as in a boy-cut or some other short hairdo... erm, its haram?! :eyes:
Libellula 30-09-03, 06:54 PM Well that's what my dad told me. He wouldn't let me cut it. :angre:
So I assume as long as it's a bit longer than a boy cut it would be ok?
I like the O'conner shave off style!! I bet she feels light-headed!!
I don't believe it is haram it is a story made up by men.... and we all know why!!!
Wardat_il'7leej 30-09-03, 08:14 PM Actually i was tempted so many times to do it i think it would be sooo comfy. What if you go bold then wear li7af or a cap or something to cover it up?

Pleaaaase ladies !
Common ! I dont belive that you are thinking to shave your heads ! Im not speaking in an Islamic point of view ,,,, but a bold girl !!!!! :duh:
Even having it short ,,,, I mean why would you do that ?! You girls should be proud of your long hair (i dont mean it has to be very very long , but acceptebaly long).
Seham !!!!!
You know you are slowly being an unbeliever of Islamic teachigs?. Every single thing to you is not real ? Then tell us what is real in Islam ? :fire:
When you start reading the Quran and Hadeeth, then you can say what is real or what is not. But for now you better not say something that will be (7ujja) on you in judgment day.

Exaaaaaaactly!!!
The problem is that People don’t recognize the valuable things they have unless they lose them.
As long as it's still feminine I don't see what's the problem? :duh:
Libellula 03-10-03, 07:58 PM no one answered my question yet... :lost:
is it haram or not?
i kinda agree with enigma here..
Guwantanamist 03-10-03, 09:33 PM feminine ?!!!
You people are really affected by western culture ! This is the least i can say.
And yes sister it is 7aram unless for tharoora.
Shinoda LP 03-10-03, 09:40 PM Its hair for christs sake!!
It'll grow back on!!
:duh:
restrictions, restrictions!!
Guwantanamist 03-10-03, 09:54 PM no dear not restrictions, infact it is protection to the most precious thing in this world (women).
If you just know what Islam gave women when all other nations only treated women even less than animals you will understand. Some nations even werre wondering weather women are lving creatures or no !
Others took women as slaves and do what ever they want with them.
PLus a lot of more examples that you can read about in history books.
In reality even now you can see that in europe and the states women are only objects used to attract customers ! (Look for example the advertisments on TV or on the roads.... in UK, Germany ...etc) and you will realise that animals are more important the women over there !
I believe the length that a woman is allowed to cut her hair should not exceed her very start of her EARS! Which means anything above your ears is not allowed Full Stop!

The point is that it's not 'tashabuh bilrijal' right?
I dont see why a "boy cut" is considerend as immitating men by any means. its a matter of personal prefrence and as long as she's not doing it for the sake of "looking like a guy.. or immitating one" then i dont see why its 7aram.
its all about the "niyya" i guess.

So if a guy grows his hair long just because he wants to and doesn't mean to look like a woman it's okay?

i knew someone was gonna throw something as obvious as that to my face.
we all know the hadith that clearly states that guys shouldnt look like girls or immitate them by any means. thats why gold and silk are 7aram.
i just expressed my own point of view there..and if am wrong then so be it.. but i still stand by it. :)

That's a sexist point of view. The hadeeth goes both ways Nabs, for women and for men. Tashabuh to the opposite sex is what is forbidden.....your gender doesn't matter.
Religion isn't about taking what you want and dropping what you don't like.
However you are entitled to an opinion..........it's a free world ;)

ok fine. let it be 7aram.. even better i guess. i hate short hair on women anyways.
more restriction on women.. why not? ;)

What restriction? It's merely asking you not to act like something you are not.
And you can't specify women here... because the same applies to both genders.

umm.. men can cut their hair as short as they want. lol. women (as u people say ) cant.
it doesnt apply on both..cause this topic is about "cutting" hair.. not growing it dear. :)
Endure Whisper 05-10-03, 02:54 AM Well,, I asked about this and this is what I was told..
There is NO solid hadith or a verse from the Quran that says it's Halal or Haraam. However, I asked about this, and this is how the "abadhi" look at it: since it's not mentioned in the sunna or quran, it doesn't really matter what you do, but if you could, try avoiding cutting your hair. Trimming is different, and it's perfectly all right, since you're trying to make your hair healthier and that's what our religion is asking for.

Dear,
As far as restrictions go, men can't grow their hair long either, just like women can't cut it too short. ;) Islam is a fair and equal religion :p

Erm......I guess you weren't following me. I was referring to the hadeeth which forbids 'tashabuh', which DOES apply to both. And you had stated it for only men:
we all know the hadith that clearly states that guys shouldnt look like girls or immitate them by any means
Wardat_il'7leej 06-10-03, 02:05 AM It has been established through the Hadith of Rasulullah that he used to, at times, have hair which reached up to his shoulders.
Homeless 06-10-03, 02:12 AM yah I also heard that the Rasool had longer hair!
oh well I cut my hair acouple yrs back boy cut and it was so funky. It grew so much now and im still planning to grow it
I would NEVER consider going bold though ....
I dont think cutting ur hair boycut is Haram ... its not like it looks like a GUYS haircut anyway .. it looks different and it wouldnt suit a guy anyway .. its just called boycut cuz its short.
Shinoda LP 06-10-03, 04:47 AM I can't believe I sinned when I grew my hair, when I was in college. Shoulder length.
I have an ear-piercing too.
Funny, how in-secure a religion can get! :bored:
Homeless 07-10-03, 04:44 PM I told u what I thought about the ear piercing Shinoda?

~*FaiThFuL*~ 07-10-03, 07:24 PM I just cut my hair short before few weeks
I cant see how that could be haram in any religion
for god's sake it is just a hair am not trying to look like a guy or something!
a9ln some women they look more feminine and cute when they cut their hair so how is that copying guys?
Homeless 08-10-03, 05:45 PM I was ABOUT to get my hair cut boycutt again today but then the hair dresser was like I should grow it and stuff as it looks nice now and it would look better longer.
We'll c how it goes!
I would really love to cut my hair, like i am tired of having long hair. Though, my hubby loves long hair and its like i play the same tape with him everyday, but he still says i prefer seeing you with long hair. So its like i made an agreement with him and said, once we have our first abby, "espeically after labour i was told a woman losses a lot of hair" thats when i will have my hair very short! :D
Shakoosh Kabir 09-10-03, 04:43 PM What about women who grow a beard or moustache in Islam? Are they allowed to cultivate them, or must they be shaved off or removed using sticky tape?

Not sure if you are actually really asking or making fun, but sitll i will answer you.
In general it is so ugly looking at a woman who is so hairy to the extend she actually has visible moustache ... and some got even hair on their chin etc... obviously a lot would just go for threading or wax. !!
But there are some who just don;t instead bleach which even looks more worse!
So islamically speaking, man have been adviced to take care of her self, and be clean and neat! ... samething goes for men!

If it is permissible for a woman to cut her beard or moustache, what is wrong with cutting the hair on her head?

Very simple - i believe a woman not removing hair on her face, that is Moustache, and beard, would just make her look like a man, where shaving her hair completely would make her again look like a man.. so there is one main point in those 2 statements, to avoid women looking like man :)
indeed... this topic is very interesting ... :color:
Scarlet 08-11-03, 03:55 PM i asked about this issue and i was told that women should cover their hair at all times whether ur with ur male friend or cousin..as long as the person who can see u is not a mahrim [someone u cannot marry, like ur father, father in law, grandfather,bro,uncle..]..it doesnt make a diff. u have to cover ur hair infront of any man..coz he is a stranger to u.. so whether or not u cut ur hair or even have a bold head i think its okay...but you shoudlnt shave ur head if there arent any medical reasons to do so...as long as u r a mutahajiba...and dont show ur hair to forgein men i think there's no harm there and the prophet peace be upon him said that when a girl reches puberty she should cover her head and body revealing nothing but her face and hands..although i dont think a girl would look nice if she cuts her hair too short...what will be the difference between a girl and a boy if she does that?
and according to our culture and traditions..long hair is a sign of beauty :) trimming is okay..'coz that will make ur hair healthier..but cutting it all off :lost:  .....
that's what i heard..anyway phoenix i think u look very pretty with long hair ;) :)

*Ofcourse there is a huge difference between a girl n a boy okay, now all of a sudden its the hair's length which decides tht?
Infact short hair looks very nice and pretty on a lot of gurls, it makes them look more feminine..
*yeah and according to our culture and tradition only fair gurlz are pretty, or fairness is the sign of beauty..but again people have different tastes..we were made to think tht long hair looks prettier but the truth is some gurlz look prettier with short hair, and some people think short hair is much prettier and sexy..
Scarlet 08-11-03, 04:18 PM ok i'm not saying that the hair length decides the diff between a girl and a boy....
and why r u sooo mad about it..i'm just giving her my advice..
hatha howa 7ag al muslim 3ala al muslim..and tan9a7 a'7eek...ever heard that 7adeeth b4..
did u have ur cut very short or something:D ?
Scarlet 08-11-03, 04:23 PM add to that..it is true..that according to our arabic culture..fairness is a sign of beauty...but nowadays..many young girls tend to put tan make up..because its the fashion....but long hair was and will always be a sign of beauty to arab ppl...but as u said..some girls might look prettier with short hair...ppl tastes varry from one person to the other..
i myself have short her...but i intend to let it grow:)
Libellula 08-11-03, 04:37 PM OK, so I guess it's haram after all..
thanks for the replies :)
Scarlet 08-11-03, 04:40 PM its not haram...but dont cut it too short
o allah bay7asbik 7asab niyatik,,if u intend to look like a guy then its 7aram..bss if u think u'll look prettier...and more girly then 3adee :D 7alaaaal!

Indeed it seems that women are not allowed to cut their hair, with the exception that she trims her hair on the lower end only to enhance growth, or to level the lower part of it.
I understand that this fatwa was issued so muslim women would not end up looking like men or like non-muslim women (who may cut their hair very short).
X-press 09-11-03, 12:28 AM Here are some information which I read from Mufti Ebrahim Desai:
The Fatwa is that a woman should let her hair grow naturally long even way below the shoulder line and is only allowed to trim the bottom to even out the split ends or to enhance the growth. This trimming does not exceed more than a few inches.
Hence, it is in no way permissible for a woman to shorten her hair up to shoulder length. A woman who has naturally short hair is obviously exempted.
And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best
Wardat_il'7leej 09-11-03, 10:36 AM Alla a3lam.....what happens to a woman who chooses to cut her hair or go bold before cancer and chemo get to her?
Persian Queen 09-11-03, 11:41 AM lAll that i can saythat it depends on you ? do you want to cut it just for achange imean for change of look so you enjoy on the why you look. If you can notice for your self not to show ppland i dont think there is something rong with it as engima say.

After posting this reply, I was later on wandering: if a muslim woman is not supposed to cut her hair short, mainly so she doesn't end up looking like a man or like a non-muslim woman,...isn't she supposed to cover her hair with a veil at the first place?
1) If her hair is covered isn't it a sign to deferentiate her from a non-muslim woman?
2) Secondly, if a woman has short hair and is veiling, how can we say that she might look like a man?
The veil is already a muslim symbol and a woman's garment!

Assalamu Alikum dear brothers and sisters..
As Far as I know that women shaving hairs is haram unless you are forced to because of any reason (ex. for medication).
About cuting hair.. it's permisable as long as you and your husband agreed on the length and all but not being above your ears.
Cutting hair in an intenttion to immitate kaafir ladies or immoral women is haram.
[And Allah knows all that you reveal and all that you conceal] so fear Allah in all what you do.
And Allah knows best.

Wardat el'7aleej... what is your source for this info ?
Because im pretty sure that Mohammed (PBUH) never had his hair that long. Enlighten me if i was mistaken :)
2) Infact short hair looks very nice and pretty on a lot of gurls, it makes them look more feminine..
Im sorry to say this, but i think people who think that women look more feminine are only sick !
Or maybe they are infected with the (western like to be) attitude !
sanwin25 13-11-03, 05:00 PM Where in the Quran does it forbid cutting of hair ?
Vargher 20-11-03, 01:12 AM yeah we need a clear wise answer

LOOOOL
plz god have mercy on my soul..
You know it seems tht you relate everythin 2 the west I dunno why..!!
anyhow you have no right to judge other people's taste, if some1 finds a women with short hair pretty he is not sick, infact a person who judges other people's taste and says they are sick bcuz of their taste...he is sick!
You should listen to yourself.., some people have different tastes okay, not every1 likes long hair, some men actually like seeing a women with short hair, it is their taste, god creates different tastes, it has nottin 2 do with them being infected by the west, or are ya sayin god who created the west is different thn the one who created the east?
