View Full Version : Why is Oman the worst sports nation in the region?

Big MO

I can't think of any sport where have won anything.
we have a very fat sports minister.
we have heads of sports associations who have never played any sport.

and yet this country has more natural talents than any other country in the region.

why are we the worst sports nation in the region?? what do you think should be done.

and you mods don't dare moving this to the sports sabla. it's for general discussion.

Simple!

Not much attention is given to sports, not enough money, not enough encouragment, no nothing!

yah i agree but why??

Those guys who wear the red and white tops with khanjar on it are representing the country. why would we want to bring the country's name and reputation down the drains?

It's abvious Big Mo the poeple incharge know nothing about sports, and when it comes to select couches we get the cheapest and the ones dupmed in other countries. It's true we have alot of talents but these talents need to be looked at, need to be taken care of, developed and trained properly. when i look at our players and sports figure in Oman they look so skinny and it seem they are not eating well or not training properly, compare any other player in other country with an Omani player and see the difference.

we need to put someone who knows and have the desire for sports incharge, someone enthusiastic

we need to give chance to real talents to grow and developed

we need to make a profession not just a hobby

i read once in the news paper that a national team player had to cancel training and return home because of his job, hello that can't be happening you either give full time to sport and stay at your job

training session is a problem here too, player have to train at least twice a day and take it seriously
we also have mentalitiy problem amongst player they think "i know how to play and that's enough" no tha's not enough they have to work hard at it and get better

our players need psycologist so they can get rid of thier scariness in the field and fans need to be more supportive

any way i could go on and on about this ....etc. :angre: :bang: :fire: :bang: :bang: :bang:

Maybe it's just to say that we're there! I know it doesn't make any sense, and I wonder why too! There are so many good players out there, just waiting for a chance, and what they really need is someone to support them, someone who's a professional in this field. They need better equipment, better playgrounds, better nutrition, better training! All this needs money and someone who really cares about sports!

Big MO

so azure what you basically saying the people incharge of thw sports in Oman should be sacked. and we need more money in sports.

i agree with what you said but the sad thing it's not just football. it's all sports. sombody up there (MOF) doesn't like sorts and as a result the whole nation is suffering.

ooh doc we've been saying that we're going only to participate since 1970. what happened to sports planning??

and i can understand that if we're playing countries like France, Brazil, England etc who are 100s of years ahead of us but we say that when we play Bahrain, a country with a population of 129 people.

Dr N
19-09-03, 12:44 PM
MO, it could be because Bahrain gives more attention to sports than we do!

I think that's the problem basically, we need someone to plan and someone to be fully in charge!

We probably need to start from zero all over, in order to change, we need a stronger base!

hey guys come on don't be that pessimistic , we're not that bad !

the only sports we are not good at are :

football
handball
swimming
volleyball
tennis
athelete
golf
boxing
car race
basketball
net ball
soft ball
badminton
table tennis
chair tennis
.
.
.
.
etc

apart from that , we re on top list ( of losers) always !

Ok , Oman is the best team in hockey in the region !! we are far a head from other GCCs ! If you know the reason you wouldn't be surprised !

ANyway , there's another thing we could do , look at Qatar, they got some good colkoured medals (gold ) they are planing very well , they brought some Kenian , Bulgarian , and other nationalities and give load them with money and now they are Qataries anf represent Qatar ! but it'snot a good option is it ?!! we need some orginal omani if this term does exist lolz .

Talking about those who are in charge of the sports establishment , they have zero clue about football , for example how can u put a man on top of football tree , and he doesn't know the simplest thing about it like what's number of football team in a pitch ! BUt is it their mistake ?!! abosolutely no !

So , might be the players themselves duhh they might not giving 105 % of their efforts ! possibly but why ?
what do you expect from a player who lost his job simply coz he was absent from work represnting his country ! where is hte coordination here !! Million times i heard that many players in different sports have not been granted for leave to represent so and so national team ! would you expect a good performance from this player ??! i bet you don't !

What do you expect from a player who got an injury in one of the competition while represnting his country , and then no one turned to him , they forget about him , since he's no longer able to represent the country due to his injury ! is this the way we award our heros !! No Comment !

but we have to admit we have some exceptional cases where by we have some good resutls !

I remembered , our youth national handball team , they came third in the Arabian championship in Syria ( only 3 teams participated in this championship)

Our U-17 team came 4th in the World U-17 youth Cup ! ( the youngest player was 23 yrs old )

Anyways :

To be honest we are not that nad , we have some good teams in swimming and they got some medals in GCC's compitition recently !

We have Hamad Al Wuhaibi , Quwat Jabal ! he's good , just need some support from the government , beside his father's !

Nabhani's brothers in Tennis , the three of them are doing really very well, but again , not given that much attention , they only rely on their own support , and their mother as coach !

We have a good shooting team ! lately haven't been as good as they used to be ! wonder why ?!

true cause nobody else play bloody hockey in the region. plus with that short temper of omanis they shouldn't play any sports where they have sticks.

We have Hamad Al Wuhaibi , Quwat Jabal ! he's good , just need some support from the government , beside his father's !

and what did hamad win??? he got a huge government funding last year and won nothing. he's always racing in the "B" races and not the "A". the funding he got is more than what's all the 54 clubs get per year (and i'm talking the 54 clubs combined).

We have a good shooting team ! lately haven't been as good as they used to be ! wonder why ?!

man we have the military guys competing against civilians from other countries and they still lose. they're the military for gods sake. god us help if we're ever invaded if those guys are the best we've got.

i remembered an incident about the hockey team !

Once the team was playing against Egypt , and they commentator start shouting ( da pakistani a'ate3 thra3i en makan pakistani ) coz they were talking in Baluchi , so no body understand them ! and we have some Pakistani players in our hocky team i believe like mohammed nasir ! but anyways , you have to admit we are the best n hocky regardless no body else plays it !

NOt succeeding in one yr doesn't mean you waste the money for nothing , at least those money given to him , means that our flag will be there where ever he goes , but givin the money to the 54 clubs or so have no use , so better somthing than nothing at all ! you were an athlete ureslf ! and you know very well that success doesn't come easily , for example to get down time part of second require yrs of training in the world of athlete ! so they should have a long term planing , of course they not gonna have immediate results, they gotta wait ! ohh by za way howz ur man Tim Montigomry ?!!

hey don't get me wrong i will cheering for Hamad and any Omani sports man but that fact remains has never won anything. he hasn't won any champoinships has he?

Tim's for has diped this season but he has won alot. he's the fastest man to ever live. don't even go there navi.

who told you that ?!! can you provide the source plzz ?!

navi all members of our shooting team are military men. that's a well know fact. they even take pictures of them and put them in newspapaers with their military uniform. in the olympics and the shooting world cup most of the other guys are civilians who train in shooting clubs.

I hear Omanis are really good at sitting in cafes for hours......with 1 cup of coffee........maybe they could somehow work that into the Olympics......

On the serious side......Oman looks way too hot to play outside.....maybe an air condioned indoor soccer field is asking too much.......although here in Japan there are a few Domes.......for sports because of the raining season, the fans demanded it.......

Cheers

PS.......my son scored 2 goals so far for his college team.....I am really into it.

hot weather is no excuse. Saudi, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE are much hotter than Oman but they still win something from time to time.

that IT wizard! he works in Omantel now i guess.

why Oman is the worst in all sports?

simply lack of investment.

the goverment can not do everything by itself, the private sector must contribute as well, but companies are more concerned about profit and maybe they don see it as a good investment since audience are paying less attention to sport as the results are not encouraging and up to expectations!

take the football teams, most of the players are employees and u have to practice everyday, when do u have the time to do that? and if u don have job how much the player is recieving as a salary every month 50, 100 R.O is that motivating enough for them to come everyday practicing for more than 4, 5 hours? of course no so they rather quit!

look at major teams in all sports, players don have other professional other than what they play. each player earn 1M to 6 M annualy.and who supports those sports big buisness men which we don have it here in oman.

i dont know much about this but i am 100% sure that omani kaarate womens didnt get anything in any competition for a simple reason: THERE IS NO KARATE OR ANY OTHER MARTIAL ARTS FEDERATION IN OMAN

you guys can add to the list of problems the fact that some sports get too much attention while others are tottaly ignored[all they concern is football and they dont give other sports a chance, and i wish something usefull came from the football]

I tend to agree with that, all sports official need to be reformed, they should be 360degree changes otherwisw we will going no where, official are there only for publicity and may be for their only Interest, We have one of the best Talented omanis out there, Unfortunately every year we go down the drain...

Well I dont agree with that, our Government has extra money of which they can easily pump in into sports, The Official needs to set up example and Interest then private sector will join in, But still the problem I think are with officials who are lacking Interest and Vision in Sports..

I think Sports its not given that much importance. A good example is country like Qatar, which is far beyond Oman economically but still they manage to bring best international coach to train their citizens.

Sad we have talented people around but all is lost in the air.

HH thats not right anymore .. after Qatar discovered LNG they are now above Oman economicly and dont fogrget the size of the country.

I tend to agree that the privat sector has not been commited to sports or any other national investment until recently.

well, it is not a matter of bringing best coachs and trainers. what Qatar does is simply buying players from Kenya, Bulgaria and other nationalities. the last world Athletics competion in France, a Keyan Athletic represented Qatar after given the Qatari passport and he won a gold medal. and they did that too in the world Weight lifting competion. brought players from Bulgaria and give them the Qatari passport.

They are pioneers in sports. That is why they look so. Have you ever read of our first Omani sailors to the America ? boy or boy you'd 2tears they way Americans described them.

I'd agree NOT much interest is put onto sports in Oman by both the nationals and the authority. We are just there attitude is what prevails but the citizens ought to show great interest without the push from the authority.

Those good athlets around the world comes from relatively poor countries and strangely those with Latin background. In comparison to the other GCC member states of course we are laging way far behind and reasons have been enough proved in preceding posts.

I tend to agree after what has been said the ball is in the authorities net for improvements.

i would:

1- set clear and well defined goals and objectives.

2- develop short-term/long-term plans subject to be justified according to our acheivments.

3- continuous revision and evaluation of implemented plans.

4- Encourage the private sector to invest more in soports.

5- provide financial support for clubs.

6- build solid young fundamental teams in all soprts for gradual improvements.

7- establish training centers for yhouths in every regoin.

8- provide qualified trainers and choaches.

9- allow players to play out side the country (e7teraf) don know what it's called in english.

that what i could think about so far!

Excellent, Qoloob

I ‘ve told u, we need such brain storms women to ‘ boost’ the performance in this field.

My self I like the way u put the approach ‘ Plan-Do-Review’ in the outlines above and I will say’ kalam jameel mafish a7san minu ‘

Now, the questions:

To implement such a program, a team of enthusiasm youth hands, which at the start of the day have their targets & tasks assigned to them, and they assure the implementation of such plans,
What ‘s the imagination of the component of this management team, the forma…?? What diff than the current management….What’s the role of women in this forma..??

Next Q: what r the outcomes u looking for.. any economical return…???

Will we see the Sabla girls representing one of sports team in near futures..!!!!??

Danke! so i have a chance to be in charge of the sports :)

i didn't get ur first Q :lost:

sure, we should foucs in the commercial side of sports. the goverment can't spend on that all the time as well as the private sector, we need to make marketing plans, as mo said sport should generate its money so they be less depended on the goverment look at the the major teams out there how much do they earn annualy from advertisements. we should pay attention to this fact.

well i hope so. but omani girls are not interested in sports! may be they see it against their nature or something restricted to males.

i would like to see female team for for every single sport. or at least the popular ones.
