View Full Version : Juveniles Prison
Okay - a lot of you may wonder what exactly am I trying to say here about this topic especially looking back to the Topic.
I believe in Oman we only got one central Prison which is located in Rumais - there for that’s the reason it was called that way.
Now - the bad thing about this Prison is that - all sort of ages are found in there.. Starting from a very young age like 13 - 14 - 15..... till 80+.
Now - why don’t the Government have a totally separate Prison/Jail for the Juveniles "under aged kids" Why are they keeping them all in the same Jail.. I just don't find it at all right or even appropriate by all means.
Mixing up young kid and the elder ones is just not right .. .. so many different Negative acts could happen.. such as sexual abuse from the elder ones.. Mistreatment - etc.... .
Anyway I would really love to hear what other members have to say about this matter - and according to your opinions a lot of intresting conversation will come up.. so strat ... :)
they're in the same buliding and area.. but are they in the same ward? i dont think so.. but then again..i have no clue how the system works over there.
Blue_Chi 13-09-03, 02:16 AM I have never thought of this before, maybe because I thought that we did not have many prisoners, or at least not many juveniles impronsed to build a whole seperate prison for them, because of their small number (according to my expecations) I think that making a WHOLE other prison for them would be a waste of money, at least in the mean time, if there are any problems accuring, they could just seperate juveniles from elder prisoners, or just have a seperate section for them in the same prison.
I dont really know much about prisons, that was just my instant general opinion.

Well till the age of 18 years old one is still conciderd to be a Juvrnile... and yes sad to say but they are somehow kept in the same section for my understanding.

You really think having a whole separate Prison for the Juveniles is a waste of Money Chi?!! So what would you rather prefer the government waste their money ON?!! Malls? Bridges? Road lights?
Just because they happen to be prisoners does not mean they got no rights as well.
I really think putting Juveniles with the elder ones is just very bad... and just so stupid of them big time.
Plus before even looking at it in that way ... don;t you think another Prison should be built rather than just having one?!!
If you look at the western countries.. they do have Juveniles Prison and for a very good reason if you think about.... the amount of abuse those kids get from the elder ones are just too much.. not to mention a place like that ... where one has no much of a say !!
Blue_Chi 13-09-03, 02:30 AM No Neens, I did not meant it that way, I just do not think that we have a big number of juveniles imprisoned to go and build a whole prison for them, if there is a way in which we can know the percentage or number of juveniles imprisoned in Oman that would give us a much better view, but just looking around us, I have not really heard of any serious crimes by a juvenile, that is why I do not think many are present in jail.
Talking about wasting money, I think that our country is one of the best at doing so! LOL
Capricorna 13-09-03, 02:41 AM its also for men and women , but don't worry Neena they are buliding a new one , but i don't really remember where .. my brother told me hmm i 4got i'll find out more and tell you laterz :)
neens you're talking about correction centres for young people. i have no idea if we have any in Oman but lack of facilities never surprise me over here.

Mo - they do not have it - i am pretty sure of it ... becuase i did do a research on this matter and found out a lot of $hit...!!

Well i did hear about this as well my hubby told me once before but how true is it ?!! "this is one thing i hate about this country" everything is like tooo private even if something concerns the public!!:tiered:
I heard it will be built in such a way where it is Underground ... now i am not sure how true is this at all.. so lets just not have our hopes too high.

Chi - you really think that we don;t have a huge number of Juveniles that commited crimes?!! .. you will be so surprised to know that a huge number of them happen to be very young and commited crimes where one can;t think of... .
Give you one example - u heard about the crime that was taken place in seeb .. where 3 boys not even 18 years old yet.. killed a guy by burning him to death?!
I know a lot of cases similer to what i mentioned up there... yet this is not what we are talking about.
Okay how many fo you have been to Romais for visitng?! or even asked about it the situation in there and how things are done there and all?!

Exactly you can say that again..... if you only hear the things which happens in there .... you would get shocked.
el7ilwa 13-09-03, 04:39 PM I think this is really important thing just to make an action for .It is totally wrong to mix all the ages in one place, cauz beside the sexual abuse that might happen, there is getting new skills in making crimes & learning many bad behaviours from the old ppl.SO instead of punishing & teaching them we destroy them!!
neens dear!
You should worry less about the prison dept. as everything is taken care of in a sensible way. To begin with........yes we do have a juvenile ward within the central prison and ofcourse kids and adults, male and female, hardcore and firstimers, Ex civil servants and nondescripts ARE SEGREGATED.
The rehabilitation of convicts is a long process and every required counseling and trade skill is dispensed to the inmate in the course of his or her term.
Yes ............We are building a state of the art prison at Al Amerat and it is ubove ground and NOT underground.
Any more questions.......neens?

Please don't compare to western countries! The prisons over here are like heaven, criminals end up with more rights than normal people. Which of course has it's effect on the crime rate........I've heard of people who commit a crime just to get in jail! :duh:

I still say that having a juvenile ward within the central prison it self it yet not a very good thing... . There are juveniles yet mixed up with the older ppl.... it is still not set right at all.
Why can't the government make a whole different prison for the juveniles?! Don’t you believe having a whole separated prison from the older prisoners would be a much safer and better Environment than putting them in the same Jail..but in a different ward.. yet where they do get to meet somehow...!
For sure rehabilitation of convicts is a very long process who does not know this... plus i believe prisoners by all means got rights as well " as they call it Human rights"!
Yes i would love to know a lil bit more about the situation in those jails - how are the prisoners treated? are they very much taken care of?! do they provide them with all sort of food?!
What about those young kids who have been convicted .. how are they treated too?!
Please don't compare to western countries! The prisons over here are like heaven, criminals end up with more rights than normal people. Which of course has it's effect on the crime rate........I've heard of people who commit a crime just to get in jail!
I will have to compare to the western countires Enigma - becuase the way they take care of their ppl just show how much even a prisoner got rights....!!
Just becuase they are prisoners does not make them non human right?! Okay there are degrees on one being a criminal.. like those who rape and Murder and Abuse"in other words those who harm ppl those criminals are for sure being treated in a bit harder way.. but if one is there becuase he happend to use drugs - was caught with the wrong group.. etc.. i guess those should be treated less than being harsh.
I do not believe that all prisoners should be treated excatly the same... it should be according to what crime have they commited..!
Just becuase in the westen countries they happen to have good jails which gives the prisoners a second chance in their life.. doesn;t mean ppl just commit a murder or a crime to get into prison because its like heaven on earth!!

Neens :) ,
I have heard of many cases where people do commit crimes JUST to get into a safe, sheltered place where their rights cannot be violated. I am not using this just for the sake of argument rather because it IS true. You may not have heard of them but there ARE cases such as these around here.

I am not saying that there are no such cases dear - everything is possible and there are a lot of crazy ppl out there if you ask me.
However - my argument here is mostly about the prisoners - it is a veryy good thing if they are given a good facility during the time they are in there. Especially those convicted with a longer sentences,,, 10 years and life!
I can imagin one who is homeless - and if he/she knows being in jail with all those great facility you know from being fed and a place to sleep they can commit a crime ... i can't argue about that at all

Why should they be given a good time! Prison isn't supposed to be a place where you have a 'good' life!
I say the worse it is the better, that's what's gonna scare them from commiting crimes!

I am not saying that they should provide them with all those Entertainment that we get outside .. no nothing like that, all I was suggesting that they should somehow been given a clean place to sleep – better facilities in a sense of if one wants to study a course should be given the chance.. “which I heard is happening” though not sure of how true is that.
o you really believe if they are given the worse treatment would really do any good?!! Especially a place like there where there are above 5000 prisoners.. who can just easily Kill one another!!
Just because one happens to be in jail does not make him a curl bad person. Yes there are ppl in there are just one mean bastards ... that i know but you cant say ALL.. so no I don’t think giving them the WORSE treatment is fear and square!
Nimr Mal Zibala 14-09-03, 06:46 PM Is ready.

you don't have to witness it to know that it's happening. As Neena said we hear alot of stories.
and sleyum putting forward the outcome of a bad practice for discussion shouldn't be considered as being negative attitude. a negative attitude would be to bury our heads in the sand and pretend that these problems don't exit. we're very good at that in Oman.
I feel so sad that we don't know nothing about the prison in Oman.. I wish i wishhh if I could go there and see the situation and how things are handled there.. hope it's clean!!
How are women treated? what do they do all day long?
anyone knows?
thanks.

The current prision has a whole section for juniviel prisioners. Another building is being built right now for them away from the other prisioners
A new prision is being built in Al-Amirat (definatly not underground!!!)
There are taught Quran and are given lectures there and in the new prision they will have a section to teach them some kind of skill.

neens!
The reason why I asked you THAT question is this.... If you got a relative as an inmate then your position of independent observer is eroded as emotions play havoc with rationality. I was seeing it from a totaly diffrent angle.
If you dont have one for sure you qualify as an independent observer and it is within your right to request the prisons director through the director of PR at ROP to pay a visit to the jail and find out for yourself how the softer gender [ women ] and juveniles are treated. What kind of educational, recreational and counselar facilities are availed for the inmates.
Through out the world independent observers from the red cross, UN human rights council, amnesty international, the human rights watch organization and other local concerns periodicaly pay visit to correctional instiutions and assess the situation there. so I feel ours is no diffrent from the rest. The best thing for you to do is get in touch with PR dept [ROP] and organize a visit.
This is how this fisherman sees it.
I rest my case.
Mti - how much guarantee will I be given the chance to actually go in there and taken for a tour to see the prison in its real way?!
Is it just that easy walking in there at the ROP director whatever you call it.. to tell them hey please i want to be taken to Romais to see how things are being done in there for the sake of satisfying my curiosity!! .. ...
I mean is tha teays to actually get accepted by the ROP... i mean from what I know in this country everything takes ages... i might go in there tomorrow and ask fro such a thing and won;t get a reply back till next year!!
