WHY WHY WHY???

I had some pimples when I was in high school and my first year of college. Then they disappeared completely for a few years. Now as of a few months ago, I started getting pimples again. You would think with all the new medicines, and modern technolgy...this could be cured:lost: ...

Iv'e heard all sorts of causes....from poor diet, to heredity, to stress....but does anyone really know the cause?? and any cures??

The constant change of environment is also a factor.
Humidity plays a vital role.
As for me, I don't use anything, I totally ignore pimples. (they seek attention so just ignore them :p). No seriously, if you start using medicines they will help cure for a period of time, and once you stop medication, they will reappear!

I guess hormones are another source of pimples, but don't worry it's just a certain age and they will disappear.

Here are some questions which i thought would help u...

What causes acne exactly?
Mainly it's hormonal fluctuations, and these are commonly experienced during puberty. Hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, which combines with dead skin cells in the pores and becomes acne. While stress alone isn't enough to cause acne, it may aggravate already problematic skin. "Stress causes your body to produce more hormones, and those hormones don't live in a vacuum," says Lydia Evans, a dermatologist with a private practice in Chappaqua, N.Y. "They interact with each other all the time, and that will impact your skin directly."

Are there different types of acne?
James Fulton Jr., a dermatologist and author of the skin-care guide Acne Rx, categorizes acne into four grades: Grade I is the least severe form and consists of an equal mix of blackheads and whiteheads (whiteheads have a closed surface opening). With Grade II, you'll see an increase in whiteheads. Grade III involves inflamed pimples along with whiteheads and blackheads. Grade IV is the most severe, characterized by large cysts (often red or purple in color), pimples and, yes, more whiteheads and blackheads. "Grade IV acne tends to be hereditary and is potentially the most scarring," says Fulton.

At what age does acne start to clear up?
Unfortunately, there isn't a definitive age when it goes away. "Many people think of acne as just a teenage problem, and that's not the case," says Manhattan-based dermatologist Ronald Sherman. "There are a lot of adults with acne who never had it as teenagers." Luckily, teenage acne generally clears by age 20. Adult acne is much more persistent.

What is the best way to prevent acne right before your period?
Approximately 60 percent to 70 percent of women suffer from premenstrual acne outbreaks, according to Fulton, and preventing them is tough. "It's largely out of your control," says Evans. Fulton's best advice is to follow your skin-care routine diligently, every day. "Acne is like a time bomb. It develops 24 hours a day, seven days a week, below the surface of the skin. Getting your pores cleaned out is the only solution," he says.

for reasons no one completely understands follicles sometimes get blocked. Sebum (oil) which normally drains to the surface gets blocked and bacteria begins to grow. The result is a whitehead or a blackhead. When the trapped sebum and bacteria stay below the skin surface is foremd. A blackhead occurs when the trapped sebum and bacteria reaches the surface of the skin and opens up.
Either way, blackheads and whiteheads are filled with trapped sebum and bacteria. The treatment adviceis are therefore the same for both of them.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I really appreaciate it.

@najah.....was wondering what medicine this Dr. gave you. See I went to the doctor and he gave me a prescription of Birth Control:rolleyes: .....see as Silent Tunes suggested, hormones play a big role in breakouts and some birth control helps hormone levels balance. But I really dont want to be on BC forever!!

My diet is a good diet. I eat lots of vegetables and fruits-all organic, pesticide free. I drink lots of water.....

Guess I gotta go get some yogurt.

Thanks Guys:)

OK....I know a good trick for getting rid of pimples FAST!! Now, this should NOT be done for the long run, but if you have an important event to attend and your face is BAD......take 4-6 Zinc vitamins at night time, and you will see a difference by the next day. Sometimes takes 2-3 days. You can take these vitamins for no more than a week straight, because its such a high dosage of Zinc, your body will start rejecting them. I did this in high school for events like the Prom...and other important events.

The problem is, is that its a short term, emergency trick...but it works;)

dorellum regarding zinc intake u should be careful to avoid complications and toxicity specially after taking that amount of tablets...
zinc is important factor for the immune reaction like vitaminC , BUT instead taking tablets which might affect ur body it is better to take it from foood...

my advice girl is to avoid taking tablets...

Infact click here (http://www.absoluteacneinfo.com/zinc.html) to read about zinc. You should not take more than 100mg a day. I encourage everyone to check this site out. It tells about natural ways of treating acne.

To understand acne , u should keep in mind that it is a result of interaction among hormones, keratin, ( skin substance), sebum, ( oily substance from hair follicle glands), and bacteria , and this interaction determines the course and severity of acne. So in order to treat it u have to consider all of those 4 factors.. for example if u r treating by antibiotics , u r only blocking one factor, plus some individual have very strong hormonal factor and these patients are difficult to treat …, this is why acne treatment effect vary from one individual to another. .. and most patient do is try different treatment till they discover the best suitable one.. it happened to me here I discovered that using an antibiotic is the best for me, my sister also suffered from the same till he discovered a best cream..
what I will do now , is talk to divide acne into superficial and deep( cos they differ in severity) and how to treat them , ..

superficial acne Blackheads or whiteheads ,inflamed papules, pustules, and superficial cysts are characteristic of this acne see this picture..
http://a248.e.akamai.net/7/248/430/20020531070853/www.merck.com/pubs/mmanual/plates/p116_1.gif
treatment

A- washing and use of good toilet soap this has little effect but may improve the appearance of oily face.. antibacterial soaps are of no benefit and abrasive soaps make it difficult to use some drugs.
B-antibiotics this is what I used and it helped me, the idea o this antibiotic is to kill the bacteria which causes acne ( proprobacterium acne) which is anaerobe .. topical clindamycin or erythromycin are useful …this is used with other follicular drugs ( see below)

C-sunlight sunlight causes mild dryness and slight scaling and is usually helpful. About sunlight it is difficult to say it is of no benefit..

D- antibiotic and anti-proliferative
Azelaic acid cream 20%, is best used for inflamed acne ( red + swelled).. it kills the bacteria plus it decreases sebum secretion and also keratin proliferation .. thus only factor remained is hormonal factor..

E-Topical tretinoin (retinoic acid) in 0.025%, 0.05%, or 0.1% cream, 0.05% liquid, or 0.01% or 0.025% gel is also often effective. a new topical retinoid, adapalene 0.1% gel, was recently approved in the USA.
But the problem with these drugs is that it can cause irritation,, so u should be careful when applying it and it should be applied at night.. and avoid sunlight and other drugs to avoid sever irritation.

5% to 10% benzoyl peroxide, sulfur-resorcinol combinations, oral antibiotics might be used in superficial acne.

deep acne this include features of superficial acne plus formation of deep lesions like cysts and abcess, and also discharge of pus ( yellow-white substance)
treatment
A-topical applications they are of no used in deep acne.
systemic antibiotics
tertracycline, erythromycin and doxycycline… now there is availbe a new drug but more expensive called minocycline this is of less side effect and better effect.
Using these oral antibiotic , u have to be aware of their side effects .. and long term use can lead to vaginitis ( inflammation in vagina) ..

B- Oral isotretinoin this is used when antibiotic are not effective.., but be aware it is not used for pregnant lady..

triamcinolone acetonide suspension this is used when the acne appear like a cyst ( fluid filled sac), abcess .. this is given by injection to the lesion..

skin abrasion (dermabasion) I think this is used for scars rsulted from deep acne…

dorellum regarding what u have said about zinc therapy… I found an article talking about it in the net , but I have to go our library to check the journal if it is there .. and I ill tell u if I got anything intresting.
if u u have a near medical library , u can help me cos may be i won't find this journal cos it is an old one

emmm why dont u ppl try doin this before sleeping boil a small amount of milk just for ur face and neck then pore the milk in a glass and add half a lemon to it wait for 10 min this put it on ur face let it stay over night.
belive me it works. Milk softens the skin and kill the dead cells. while the lemon whitens ur skin.

Hey there ... Pimples usually appear on our skins when we are in our teenage life, and also when we are in our 20s. However, some people are too lucky, they get nothing :p Well, the causes are usually stress, chocolate, exhaustion, sickness, manstraution, and even when you just sweat.
Some stay perminent  while others just leave.. Usually, when you go through above conditions they leave when you reduce in the exhaustion you make, eat too many chocolate.. or whatever ...
Drink lots of water, it helps very much.. though it shouldn't be hot or cold, just warm. There are many medicines you can use, and treatments, but I don't know the preceduers. If it becomes too much, go to a doctor.. Concerning body and health, your doctor is your best friend!!
If you're too lazy,, there are many concealers out there that you can get, but make sure they suit your skin! If I was you, I'd take an advice from a doctor and NOT use concealers .. and yeah,, one last thing, don't touch/squeeze them,, they become worser.

dear areej, we have discussed specially Dr_N about the effect of drinking water on pimples. actually this does not have an effect and there is no proof for it.

ao the bets way to be away from pimples is **self hygien**.
and if u a kind of person who suffer from hormonal excess then u better got for medicine.. because some people with high androgenic hormones get bad pimples.

That's strange I haven't seen Birth Control Pills or contraception used for acne. However, I have seen it used in females of childbearing age who are prescribed Isotretinoin for acne. This drug as described earlier by Fahad is tetrogenic and can cause severe life threatening deformities in the fetus, hence, contraception in many countries (not in Oman though) is a must and is prescribed in conjunction with this treatment. Contraception is usually started for one month prior to isotretinion treatment and for one month post treatment.

Oh yes, we had a BIG debate about this, and we ended up agreeing that water has absolutely no effect!

Like Fahad said, you need to clean your face regulary. Try visiting a dermatologist ( a skin doctor), to know what is best for your skin. I did a year ago, and I had to take some antibiotics for 6 weeks, plus I had to clean my face. Now I just clean my face twice a day. You're probably a bit young for face cleanings that are done in the beauty salons, but you can ask a doctor if you need it, it does help. And remember that you should always remove make up completely because it can have a bad effect on your face.
