Would you rather find a job once you get your bachelors degree (get some work experience then go for postgradate school) or would you go straight for a Masters degree...? and why?

View Full Version : Job or Masters degree?! Bimzoori 09-08-03, 12:40 AM Would you rather find a job once you get your bachelors degree (get some work experience then go for postgradate school) or would you go straight for a Masters degree...? and why? Shinoda LP 09-08-03, 12:44 AM Nice question. If I get a good job, directly after my bachelors, then I shall go for it ... and not for an MS. But, if I don't ... then I would rather do an MS than sit at home, doing nothing. Nothing (hopefully) should hold me back from atleast doing an MS since I have a good GPA and should most probably get a couple of good reccomendations from my proffessors. At the end of the day, I'd want to still do a job. amo0or 09-08-03, 01:05 AM As for me, when i get my bachelors degree i would look for a job, and once i start working, umm u can say after a year then i will do my MS Coz i want to make sure that i have a job and whenever i finish my MS i will go back to my chair. Quick Silver 09-08-03, 01:31 AM you can do both. Work and do your MS. That's what I did. If you think work will hold you from doing good in school then just get an internship. It pays well and it's just like a normal job. Most MS classes as far as I know start at 5 pm, so why not do both. Bimzoori 09-08-03, 02:15 AM was your masters degree related to your bachelors? I ask because some people tend to choose a Masters degree in a field which is quite different from their bachelors degree... eg, engineers can go for an MBA degree rather than continue in the field of engineering.. Quick Silver 09-08-03, 02:29 AM yes they were related some how. My BS was in Engineering, and My MS was in Engineering Management. It's better if they are related because then you will avoid taking all the pre-requsites that should be taken if you divert to another field. For example if you have a BS in engineering and you decide to do an MBA then you will need to take all those pre-required business courses before you actually start your MBA. The opposite is true, if you are a business major and you decide to do your Masters in an engineering field then you are required to take all the math classes before you start on your Masters. If it was my choice i'd choose to do my masters if i had the money or offered a scholarship, i believe with a master degree you can almost get any jog you want especially in MBA EviliO 11-08-03, 09:44 AM As for me... i'd liek to work at least a year after my graduation with a BH. Normally, you wont work in the field you have been studying for in BH, so it would be better for me to know what sector am i gonna be working to decide on my field of study in MS. Muscati 11-08-03, 10:36 AM If you have a chance to go immediately into a masters program after finishing your bachelors, go for it. But when you finish and come back to Oman looking for a job don't think that you'll be given a higher salary for your masters. It don't work like that here. If you want to do things right for yourself then work at least 2 years after your BA or BSc and then go for the MSc or MBA. It makes a huge difference. It would give you a whole new perspective and the masters program will be more beneficial to you. But still, don't come back to Oman expecting a pay jump for it. Get your masters for your own benefit and not for the expected monetary benefits. An MBA will probably get you some monetary benefit. Most good MBA programs will not admit you unless you have at least two years work experience. Some even have minimum age limits. I'm going to do my Masters this year- 7 years after graduating with a BSc in Finance I finally feel the time is right for me to go and get a post graduate degree. I do not expect to be given a raise when I come back and in fact in the short run this would hurt me financially. However the organization I work for is very competitive and is pushing everyone to get a higher qualification. If I don't make a move now I might find myself with a lower qualification than my colleagues in a few year's time. Man of principl 18-08-03, 04:27 AM hi there for me i totaly agree with what mux said..coz when u have job experince u will starte to look to things from different prospective. Most of our study is thoritical and not nessery what u will see in work enviroment. when u are in collouge most of the courese u will study specily the technical one ..u will be given all the variables u need just to solve the problems using the formula and apply what u learn.but in real life these varaibles u are given in the school u dont have..u should get them or estimate them ..so it is different than what u take in school.so this different give u compeititve advantage when u go back to school later. for me i guess having at least three years experince and then do a master and not nessecery in my field.coz after finshing ur bachlor dgree u can decided wiether u made the right choice in the undergraduate and u like the job ur doing.or u can head for other dgree if u like to change ur path . Listen2theOcean 27-08-03, 02:59 PM I will have work experience then take my masters the reasons are as following: 1)if I take my masters without any work experience, I will not get a job cuz most positions needed for a master degree consider past work experience critical. I may get, but with a lower level position. 2) Some theories we’ve took at collage I never understood it, until I had a training in an institution. 3) You will be able to know which type of knowledge exactly you really need in the type of work you are in, so u can focus on it in your studies. Because many subjects we take in the collage never appears in our work life specially in Oman, cuz mainly our books are exported from America & UK with cases could be applied only in foreign countries. I may Work & Study my masters at the same time it is challenging but worth a try to maximize the benefit of my time, especially when I’m recently without family responsibilities. In conclusion, at least one year job experience I have to get before getting my BA. Endure Whisper 19-09-03, 01:11 AM Work experience and then Masters.. I haven't started college yet, but that's what I want to do! Actually, after my diploma I am thinking of getting a job and study.. I think it's going to make my studies much easier. Big MO 19-09-03, 11:13 AM it really depends on the job opportunity. there are some job opportunities that come along only once in a life time. if you get that kind of opportunity then Masters can wait. haso0on 19-09-03, 12:07 PM well i might do the same thing as areej study and work H-Highness 19-09-03, 07:12 PM I think its better to get few years experience before embarking into Master degree, because its important to relate your Bachelor degree theory skills with practial experience to have better understanding of your field. For the first time ever ... I agree with SLP ... depends on the quality of the job ... and the quality of the degree ... FIre 27-09-03, 12:48 AM I will probably go for MS for so many reasons... some r First, the value for BS certificate in not like b4 bcuz most of places r full of BS graduates.. If u guys can remember the 1993 census, where the statistics showed oman will be fulfilled with alot of BS graduates within 10 years.. Second, ofcuz you'll be more qualified with MS and earn more salary than BS degree holder, that means u can apply for jobs that BS people cant apply for it, well that include anywhere not only oman.. Third, u will get the experience whenever u start work, so dont bother for getting a job immediately when u finish ur BS, if u had the opportunity for MS than go 4 it In my opinion, nowadays try and get MS certificate if u had the chance, dont depend on BS cuz i think it's not enough these days, not like b4,, put in mind it became a competitive career world now.. If u get a job after ur BS, work for a year or even less then go for MS.. That is my opinion guys.. Everyone has his own reasons and perspectives.. Namika 14-10-03, 01:20 PM Well I think that if you got the chance to go for masters you should go for it. But don't be surprised if you didn't get a job soon when you get back. I knew a guy who went for masters and when he got back they told him he didn't have work experince.... But maybe it depends on what your are going to study... anyways good luck for everyone who is thinking about taking masters :) Hope you get a job soon after you get back... ZeroCool 19-10-03, 11:14 PM I love the idea of persuing my studies into the masters degree .. But in the same i have to start working so i can save up for satteling as soon as possible provided that masters would take a minimum of 2 years.. Thats why i would rather do both at the same time .. you may study masters and go ahead with your work at the same time .. at some universities policy you can do that!!! Your MS degree need not be in the same field .. i know a girl who was doing BSc computer science and did an MSc in Petroleum Engineering And another guys with a BSc in Computer Science with an MSc in Communication and Signals Engineering Satan 27-10-03, 03:52 AM I did my bachelors in Marketing and Management and immediately after that i did my MBA, coz i knew once i get into work i wouldn't feel like getting back to my studies as the money would start rolling in. |
