Chelsea have failed in a bid for Dutch international midfielder Edgar Davids.
Blues boss Claudio Ranieri tried to make the Juventus star his first signing after Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's takeover at Stamford Bridge.
Juve transfer supremo Luciano Moggi, who has persistently said that the Oranje star is not for sale, confirmed Chelsea had made a formal bid to buy the midfielder.
"We have refused an offer from Chelsea which, I confirm, was made," Moggi said as he presented Juve's new signing, Ghanaian midfielder Stephen Appiah.
The 30-year-old only has one year left on his contract at the Stadio delle Apli, but Juventus are not willing to sell the former AC Milan and Ajax man.
In reference to oil tycoon Roman Abramovich, who has just bought Chelsea, Moggi quipped: "If Abramovich offered the moon for him he would still not sell him."
The signing of Appiah, signed from Parma after a highly successful year on loan with Brescia, had been seen as an indication that Davids' days may be numbered with the Bianconeri.
However, Moggi did not take that view today as he added: "Davids is part of the future of Juve."
