View Full Version : School uniforms
Libellula 06-07-03, 10:14 PM Freedom of expression in school is a constantly-debated topic, what with dress codes and speech codes and every other kind of code.
When everyone is in uniform it shows the school as a unit/team and you can identify which school a kid goes to, but mainly I'm for uniforms because it puts everyone on the same level as far as looks and family finances, it definitely saves on the clothes and when you get up on a school morning you know what you're wearing which reduces the chances of you being late.
Plus in schools in which students are not required to wear a uniform, it becomes a fashion parade on who is wearing the latest and most expensive and they are more worried about what they are wearing and how they look rather then what they should be learning.
What do you think? Should K-12 students be forced to wear a uniform to school?
hi Phoenix,
Just thought of sharing my point of view on your topic
I was never for uniforms. All throughout my school life, I had no choice but to stick with the school code of dressing in
which the uniforms had to be of a certain length, your blouse had to be tucked in and so forth.Everyone looked the same
, it was so dull.Throughout high school I was so against wearing ugly pleated skirts with socks of the school logo. These days I feel that some schools overdo it further by having children wear uniformed bags and uniformed shoes. I dont understand the actual purpose for having uniforms, to say that it cuts cost is not entirely true. You could be spending alot more on uniforms than you would on casual clothing. For the reason mentioned that children could be identified by their uniforms, yes thats a valid point. However I believe that same identification method could be applied by children wearing a colour code instead, in
this manner its not entirely uniformed.:)
regards Temara
R u talking about Oman or else where?? Coz they do wear
uniforms ….even in kinder schools…as I recall I used to wear a
uniform in kinder school…

well i totally agree with Phoenix, students should wear uniforms, coz as phoenix said it puts them on the same level, plus the student wont stair at other students cloths, and ask their parents to buy them the same while they cant afford to buy them..
And they are studying out there not showing themselves..
Libellula 08-07-03, 12:57 PM Well, In Oman we do wear uniforms and I doubt that that will change anytime soon.
I agree with Tamara! I must say I have been to schools where you didn't have to wear a uniform & schools in Oman where 'you must'! I loved it when we had the freedom... it allows your dressing identity to develop, at least that is what I felt! Wearing uniforms at schools in Oman made me feel as if I am in a military school!!
If you don't have a school uniform, what will you have in the closet for those quiet winter evenings with your man?!
Chocolate 08-07-03, 05:21 PM I gree with thoughs who say that schools must have uniforms.
It not only puts everyone on the same level but it also saves student time in the morning ,,, loking for something to wear and why do u wanna spoil ur nice/expensive clothes at school ,,,, i dont know about other stduents but when i was at school i was active or hyperactive u could say so my mom used to go crazy coz i would have paint and stuff on my uniform.... and i wouldnt want that on my Mango , debinhams or Zara tops......
actualy i dont mind uniform even for work,,, if it looks nice 6ab3an..
Homeless 09-07-03, 05:28 PM We Will all get to wear whatever we want in college and university.
It doesnt always has to be a beauty contest though, dressing up in our own clothers. I mean what we see in movies are just an exaggurtion of what it is really like. But I still agree with phoenix..
It'll be a waste of time , money and thought, trying to dress up in something new most of the times.
Besides when we do actually go out, how different will we be from school? it's going to be pretty much the same.
I never minded uniforms, and I did enjoy the non uniform days in school, but over all I would be more comfortable and relaxed all through the year with a school uniform.
Our personallities and how we are does not have to come out through our dress style. Who we are , as who we are. I't's the way we act, talk and communicate. I'm sure our dress sense also has a part in bringing out what we are like, but not necceasseraly in school.
There is gender racisim in public schools!!! How come the boys schools wear the usual 'dishdasha' & 'daghiyah' (dress & cap) while the girls school have to wear a uniform?!!! So unfair and gender bias:mad: !!

Totally agree with the points you mentioned above Phoenix...
I find that its highly recommended that schools maintain the dress code. For many other reasons too.
School students are in their developing phase. They are growing up and tought by their parents in the house and also the school has a role within that.
The dress code helps to teach the pupils, discipline and teachs them how to follow rules and regulations.
It gives them the unity and the feeling of belonging to a place shared with others. As it can develop for them their loyality to their schools and comfort to their surroundings.

agree with you there Homeless.... the time will come later on as you mentioned further to dress as they like and wish. And out of school they can wear all they want. No rules no restrictions (of course that depends on their parents).

Its good that you had the chance to experience both type of schools, but again I would disagree here about the " dressing identity to develop " as dont you think you did have enough time out of school to develop that?
Military? Yes. I can imagine that such feeling can develop because of the dress code. But again kids in that age are supposed to focus on specific things in school instead of worrying what to wear..or why they are wearing something they dont like. Everyone is wearing the same ... its not that bad. Beside am sure if you been to military school, you would change your mind :D

wow... gender racism.... ok, I'll agree with you here if you can tell me whats the girls (in Oman) standard cloths? As we all know guys Oman cloths is the disdasha and Kumma. Are you saying the dress code for girls should also be Omani traditional dress?
Beside when guys do go out. (thinking Omani) they would still wear dishdasha and Kumma... while the girls get to wear all different sort of things  .... now .... talking about being fair. Am really interested in your opinion and would like to know if my points are valid or not. :)

Mr DD,
Why do girls in primary school wear yellow/beige colour, preparatory school >> grey, and secondary school >> navy blue? You can see you can identify in what grade the girl is on the other hand that is not possible for guys!!
to make it more fair.... why aren't guys in primary school asked to wear beige dishdasha etc.. so make them distinquishable just like the girls ??!! or if it is hard then one colour should be made for all the different stages of girls schools? So you see my point of view??
Now you know why I find it unfair?
Nice topic :)
I agree with some people in here.
I love being in a uniformed school. i wouldve died without uniforms! it makes my life so much easier. i dont have to stay for hours thinking about what i will have to wear tomorrow. ooh why cant i have like fulana does!( those ideas specially in school age comes more often)we tend to need whats good and bad just for the sake of being in the same row!
I really dont want this great rule to be changed. cause it makes us stay at the same level wal7amdulila.
Solidus 15-07-03, 05:42 AM GOD, how much I hate my school Uniform, a freaky Dishdaasha :bang: and a freaky kumma aswell :bang:
In my opinion, being free to wear whatever I want is much better...

Hey I never thought about this, Seham. You got me thinking now, and I have to say that I agree. They should either stick to one colour for all stages of school, or try to match the boys dishdashas with the girls..

Seham so you would rather that the 1st primary girl to wear the same color as the 12th grade girl?? I think the difference in the colors is quite good..and the girls...actually like the difference :duh:
you will find colored disdasha for guys in private schools as far as i know. But again as far as I am aware of white disdasha is the official color for disdasha... and as going to goverment school is official..then guys just get stuck with them.
but, yes I do hear you here... but thats the reasons i can think of behind it. ok question now.. by not fair, do you mean not fair to the girls or to the guys:confused: ?

match the boys dishdasha with the girls? are you point out the same colors or find new combined colors :duh:
as the current girls colors hmm i just cant imagine some of them will look good for a dishdasha color. But overall ...its a good idea.
--------------------------
Solidus: you hate it... because you dont like dishdashas in the 1st place. But that doesnt make it not good. As it seems you would only wear it to school cause you have to. And other wise out of school all you would wear is shirts and trousers. If my assumption is right then .. I cant be suprised you dont like it..
I think dishdasha are more suitable for men and specially students,, it is a hot weather here in oman so u nead something soft to wear..it is more conveniant!
