View Full Version : Indian GIRL Marries Dog!
Mindazi 05-07-03, 02:34 PM NEW DELHI, India (AP) -- A 9-year-old girl was married to a stray dog in a ceremony attended by more than 100 guests in a village in India's eastern state of Bengal as part of a ritual intended to ward off a bad omen, newspapers reported Thursday.
The girl, Karnamoni Handsa, had to be married quickly to break an evil spell, according to the beliefs of her Santhal tribe in the remote village of Khanyan, the Hindustan Times said.
Karnamoni's tooth had grown on her upper gum, which Santhals consider a bad omen.
The girl's father, Baburam Handsa, a poor sharecropper, could not afford the expenses of marrying his daughter to a boy, so he saved money by making a street dog the groom on June 11, the paper reported.
Other news media also reported on the ritual, which does not interfere with the girl's life. She suffers no stigma and is free to marry later. She doesn't even need to divorce the dog.

X-press 05-07-03, 05:30 PM Welcome to the sabla "MINDAZI" and your nick reminds me of an old member called "Mandazi". I see you are enjoying overposting smilies and I hope you will equally enjoy your stay among us.
As for your thread, it is quite unbelievable, but I found out that the weirdest things can happen in Asia! As for this little girl, my only concern is that I hope she didn't have to kiss the "groom" or consume her "marriage"...
Charmed 05-07-03, 05:45 PM I remember I saw an article over 10 years ago about a woman marring a dog, I think in USA or Europe, and the reason was that the dog is more faithful then men.

Desert_Sloath 05-07-03, 10:31 PM My personal interpretation is the 'word marriage' used here is in a context of our friends journalists trying to attract readers attention. Marriage in this event is not meant to be 'marriage' in the sense of the word. It could therefore mean 'companionship' that in supernatural thinking the dog's presence guards the girl from evil spirits hence the good omen.
I can not perceive it to be what is going on in you guys' minds. You have gone too far to think it that way to despise the news of the event which is to spell off the evils.

NO BOSS! As you can see from the photo it is a real MARRIAGE CEREMNONY!
Madhuparkam (Offering of yogurt and honey)
The bride offers the groom a mixture of yogurt and honey as a token of purity and sweetness.

Isn't she tooooo young to get married??!:D
bytheway, 3arees louqtah:D ( her husband is tooo cute)
she is a really a good wife, she serves her husband lovely:)
DeSerTDesTroYeR 06-07-03, 11:03 AM hmm, based on the given description. Seems something acceptable for the Santhal tribe. Its weird to us as we arent familiar with. Overall, the rest of it explains more of it. As she can get married normally anytime later... So I would assume this type of marriage doesnt hold the same usual concept.
weird indeed, but such things arent suprising anymore. I remember there was once a wealthy man who wrote a will for his dog to inherit his wealth. So everything is expected in these world. :duh:
What the bride will do if her husband(dog) run after another female dog :D

That is the kuwaition for 'village enders' to answer. But i still am not convinced with your understanding of the 'word marriage'. You guys are just confusing us.

All, the above comments were really sad.. but Icy's last comment is very funny.. and it is a good question. In my opinion.. i think the first wife will give permission to her dog hubby to get married to a second wife.. after all he is a noble dog ..

Salma Dont you think you are becoming Diplomatic.. by selecting and using Nice words with caution.. Well Noble Man like Sleyum and Ice-Tea can not and can't be compared with Dog being Noble... Any way Dogs always do have more than 100 mistress... But Noble Man will end up with Legal 4...:D :p

What is strange is why that tribe would consider a 'bad omen' a tooth growning on someone's upper gum?
Secondly, why a dog in particula can break the evil spell?
Thidly, if the father could afford it, it seems he would have marry his little girl to a boy...isn't there any law there not allowing under aged weddings :lost:
i dont even think it was about breaking an evil spell. i'm sur it has something to do with the hindi belief of reincarnation. yes the hindus belive that ppl are sent bck to this life in other forms such as animals. that's why they treat animals so good. cause they think it could be an ancle, father, grandmother or a friend.
if you happen to visit india you'll see many dogs running around the streets, as well as cows and other animals.
yes there is some wierd $hit in this world.

about ur Q exxy .. first of all they said its a tribe and its their belief and kind of their culture soo no one can say anything about it culture coz ppl especially the uneducated will practice it without seeing if its right or wrong??!!!!
secondly and thirdly,, the dog isnt the one who will break the spell but the girl when she is married it'll break the evil spell and as in India the girl or the women r the one who pay and as the father was poor (as CNN) he couldnt afford to marry his daughter to a boy so he marry her to a stray dog :lost:
