View Full Version : Negotiation Skills
Negotiation is to bargain by discussion, aided by other levers.
Almost wherever you go, negotiation is needed. In some cases it's friendly and doesn't seem as negotiating.
In many other cases, negotiating can get bitter and upsetting.
But at the end u r negotiating.
So do You think that you need some negotiating skills?
As for a job interview, job allocation, salary reviews, project management, dealing ...etc
If so, What skills do u think are needed?
Assalamu alikum
I'm not an expert in this field but I have something that might help..inshalla
Negotiators need to be flexible and know their goals before entering any negotiation table. You should also know how much time you can afford in negotiating.
Each negotiator need to know thier limits (the range between what you mostly desire and what you mostly afford to sacrifce).
For eg. If you are going to buy a used car you should have in mind what's the most desirable price for you for that specific car(lets say 2000 Rials) and the maximum you would accept to pay (lets say 3000 Rials).
Probably the best thing to do is to wait for the negotiator to specify the price he wants for the car.
3 things could happen:
1- He'll state a price less than your desired price (eg. 1800 Rial). Here you'll accept if you dont have much time. Or try yo save more if you do have some time.
2- He states a price within your range (eg 2500 Rial). Here you try to minimise it untill you run out of time and effort.
3- He States a price higher than your maximum affordable price (eg.4000 Rials). Here you try to minimise the price till you get in the range you afford. If you sense that it's very difficult to do that then withdraw from the negotiation.
The above would seem intuitive for some of you, but it is important in order to have the best possible results to keep the folowing in mind:
1- Everyone has a maximum and minimum goals in any negotiation. So it's useless to keep negotiating if you both know your goals wouldn't meet.
2- Islamicly, Keep the other person in mind. If the negotiation has already reached an acceptable level for you, dont waste time trying to maximise your benefit at the expense of the other negotiator. (eg. current price met is 2500 Rials which is also the minimum the seller can sell, then it's better to stop here rather than forcing the seller to sell below his limits).
I hope that was useful!
The brain. 01-07-03, 10:58 AM Nice topic,
Yes sure we need to have such skills .
Ya3ni…..Ayah mashallah ‘ve explained it all .. I find it really useful
Somethings I could think of :
To start negotiating for certain deals : Better to have :
- Convincing personality, strong reasons, well knowledge about the deal & should have Max information as possible about the things u going to negotiate by close look to market.
- Time plan: where u don’t find yourself in time constraints.
- Ask advices, get feed back from experienced ppl.
- Initiate a prepared strategy for ur negotiation. Try to be creative.
- Keep a very good communication with other party.
-Show a good personnel relation to other dealer, show a good hospitality if they come to ur office for eg.
- Remember a smile will change a lot.
-Think carefully about future deals ( long term plan & thinking) Even if u loose the deal this time, u might get it next.
The above mentioned seems more to deals & contracts
but will try to grap something more for work negotiation.......
To be coont

Ok ,
Let’s make this thread Live……
To go through Work negotiation.. I will start a Case…and then we can discuss it…
The case : Work promotion:
I wake up in the morning :o, everything fine I go to my work as usual but still this thing in my mind why I don’t get my promotion yet ??…my internal believe & imagination telling me .. u deserve it…u work hard…u r not less than other….u do more work & effort than them…u complete ur assignment & missions faster…No absence….no delays……no excuses…
So why I’m not getting my promotion, Y Y Y..!! :weep:
Is it the boss……Maybe !!!, Is it the system….Yah it could be …Is it me..???...Yes. :sorry:
So what’s my next move…..????
How I’m going to start negotiation for it..??? do I need to negotiate for it !!
Yalla 3ad..
Well that will fall under work place politics also i guess.
You might be a hard worker, who is doing great at his work. This would make you invaluable in your existing position.
Which is a disadvantage.
It is always wise to ensure that someone else can take over your job.
Another thing is to communicate your strengths. In other word, your achievements are useless unless they are viewable by the decision makers and influences.
The way they know about your success is also vital ;)
Arabian Princess 05-07-03, 11:24 AM nice way of doing it The Brain ..
well if I were to negotiate my promotion, I will first make sure all the documents I need are in hand (eg. last promotion, courses, achivments,...)
I will also make sure I know my ways. I will learn the rules regarding the promotion and show him that in all ways I deserve it.
I will always talk positivly. Dont ever put the person you are negotioating with in a defensive position. If you go to them and telll them that they are unfair coz they didnt give you what you deserve, automaiticly your apeal will be refused because you are judging him and no one wants to be judged. You should on the other way round, show them that they know thier job and you are just looking for a consideration, this way they will try to look for all possible ways to help you!
