When buying a digital camera, you got to put few important points in your mind, starting from MP (Mega Pixels for resolution of the pictures taken), battery life, digital zoom/optical zoom, to internal memory (to store more pictures).

I have this one which is a 4 megapixel camera. I bought it last August for around 240 rials with a 256mb memory card. The price would have dropped a lot by now. The picture quality has been outstanding. The camera is small enough to carry in my coat pocket so I take it with me almost every single day.

Other cameras which I would recommend:

Canon PowerShot A80

Casio Exilim Z4

Nikon Coolpix 4300

Sony DSC-P10

Sony makes some great cameras, but my problem with them is that they use memory sticks instead of SD, or CF memory cards. I'd rather have a camera that uses standard memory cards so when I buy a new camera I can still use my old cards.

Don't buy a Kodak camera. I had one before and I regretted it. If you're more than just a point and shooter then you should consider a digital SLR like the Canon EOS 300D

Thanks Muscati for that..but i was wondering is there really a big difference in the 4-5 Pixles?

as i thought if i am getting digital camera i would get it with 5 mega pixels to give me the best quality..i actually quite like that Canon as its small

The question you need to answer is: what are you planning to use your digital camera for?

Most people who buy digital cameras never print their pics. They save them on their PCs, use them as wallpaper, email to friends, etc. If that's what you're planning to do then even 3 megapixel is sufficient. However if you are planning to print your pics you will need a 4 megapixel camera, and depending on the size of the prints you want you might need a 5 megapixel.

When you shoot at the highest resolution and highest image size, a 4mp camera will give you a resolution of 2,272x1,704 while a 5mp gives 2,592x1,944. What that means is that the biggest size of print you can get from the pics without losing clarity is 7.1x9.5 inches for the 4mp camera and 8.1x10.8 inches for 5mp. Thus unless you are planning to be printing 8X10 pics a 4mp camera is more than enough.

However most people crop their pictures before printing them. Photographers tend to take images that cover a bigger area than what they require and then crop the image to print just the part that they want. This makes you lose a lot of resolution, because the remaining image has to be blown up to fill the picture. A typical cropping is one third of the image. If you print standard 4X6 pictures then 4mp is still ok, but if you like the bigger 5X7 size then it would be better if you go for a 5mp.

However most experts agree that if you get the best 4mp camera it will give you a better image quality than going for the cheapest 5mp camera you can afford. Don't set yourself a budget of say 200 rials and then when you go to the shop look for at 4 and 5mp cameras that all cost 200 rials. If you can afford a 200 rial 4mp camera, it will give you a better picture than a 200 rial 5mp camera. If you really want a 5mp camera then you should pay the extra 20 or 30% for a good 5mp camera.

Another thing you should remember is a good camera is only as good as the photographer using it. So if you use a 5mp camera but you're not a very good photographer, your mistakes will show more prominently in the images because the clarity is higher.

As for the question of whether Sony make good cameras. You should know that Sony has two different classes of cameras. Their better cameras use german Carl Zeiss lenses and much more expensive than their normal range. But even their normal range isn't bad. They're decent cameras, but I don't think they are as good or better than other camera from professional camera companies such as Nikon and Canon. But Sony does have one advantage in that they can film very long video on their memory while most other camera limit the video to less than 5 minutes. If you want that versatility and don't mind the memory sticks then Sony is a good choice.

Why digging an old thread?! You could have checked the latest threads talking about SLR cameras or maybe you could have started a new thread.

The discussion is really helpful to decide on which SLR camera among the best two.
