View Full Version : What is going wrong with our sablah ?

I am just wondering about the quality of the topics and discussions posted in this forum.
Although it is a personal preference and judgment in the first place, I sometimes find silly topics that, I believe, are deteriorating the quality of our forum.
A magazine in its content and issues under spotlight conveys the interest and magnanimity of its readers, and so does our forum, as I believe. I understand that a moderator cannot close a thread for being below the standard nor can s/he criticize it. Even when a topic is absolutely trivial, courtesy and mutual respect hold a member from critiquing it.
I think a member should be ranked by the quality of his post, not their quantity. An elite member should be the one who comes up with an elite topic that stimulates our minds and provokes our curiosity to discuss, know and understand.
We, members, should rank a topic, not the counter of views and replies. It is pitiful not to find a single worth-replying topic out of a long list.
I have been a member for over a year. Seldom do I log on and leave a reply. Am I just picky or do we really need something to upgrade our sabla?

Don’t you think we can make an elegant forum of our sabla before it degrades and becomes one of the pathetic forums of which the web is full ?

I guess this topic belongs to Suggestion sabla ..

Thank you man and I like you suggestion.

However, we have to consider avalibness as one of the good features of a "good" member. I dont think its fair to call somone an elite member when he posts once a year even if his posts were really valuable!! we need members around and though thier posts might not be as enriching as others, at least they are around!!

We have the concept of best member of the month inorder to cover this gap between avalibness and quality! Moderators try to choose few of the best members around and then try to give the choice to members.

Yes, the quality of sabla might not be as wanted (we will never be content coz we always strive for the best) but we are calling for members like you to try to help us around! as you said, as a Mod .. we cant do anything, we just need members help.

I like your idea, and will raise it to admin and see what could be done about it... Inshallah.

What your r saying is excellent, but I think these days members are busy with their holidays & the others still working, so their minds are rush with many things, maybe they need a break to come up with new ideas with a good quality. I've heard some members r saying we discussed all the good topics so what is remaining??!!
I remember in some times there were many many gOod topics to be discussed in the same time, & these days members might be refreshing their minds from the study & other things( Like me 4 example:gap: )......so we are waitting for these members;) .
By the way why u don't start a good topic so u inspire the others with a brilliant ideas??

Thanks for replying.
Actually I intended to post and would love, this topic to be in the general discussion sablah.
I understand your point Arabian Princess. But on the other hand, we shouldn’t abdicate the topic quality for being fair. If fairness is to rank members by number of participations, it is an incitement for some members to increase their posts regardless of quality. This is very obvious with many members unfortunately. If we, as members and moderators, care about the number of posts more than the quality, then the problem is even worse. The problem will then be with our objectives not development.

A practical solution, I think, is to evaluate topics after reviewing and give points, say, out of 5. Then ranking comes based on the number of points a member would have gained. That ranking will be more useful for a reader; it will tell how creditable a member is, not how long s/he has been posting.
I don’t think it is a solution that I start coming up with a brilliant topic; I am one out of many. For such a crucial development, it has to be an everybody-concern and should be under the scope of the management policies.
I am humbly requesting all members and moderators to take a step towards better discussion.
I thought of quitting browsing this sablah , and found it worthy to say a last word. I know that no matter who stay or leave, the sablah will continue as usual but continuation is not everything.
Thanks again for replying.

Man, what about a balance between quality and quantity?

we will look into it .. I promise!

as you said, its a point you had to make. Sabla will continue forever and we need a gudienss to know how bad/good we are doing.

Man, you think its not a soloution if you started opening topics??
well let me tell you this, most of people who complain about quality are people who are not around .. what do you want us to do?? we try and try but those who search for quality do not join us in discussions!!

I say its a sloution to start posting, because by few ideas from you, it would creat an enviroment you love and you will drag people who are intrested in enriching sabla with thier posts!

I think balancing is way better than favouring quantity, althogh I think the mechanism in this case will be difficult.

I kept smiling while reading your furious reply.
I promise to post new topics. I hope they will be up to the level.
