Hey Guyz

I got a problem in my PC, some programs don’t work on it, and they are not compatible with Windows XP.

So, I decided to put Windows 98 with XP on the same PC, I have no idea how to do that, therefore I came here to ask you guyz…

You know, when you restart your PC, you will get 2 choices, windows XP or 98, that’s exactly what I want…

I need someone to give me COMPLETE steps of how to do it, cause I’ve never done it be4… I will print the instructions and then use them when doing the windows 98 thing…

I bet that most of you know how to do it, so please tell me… :lost:

My system information is:

Pentium 4
Windows XP only
40 GB
224 Ram
2.0 GHz

But remember guyz, I don’t want to take any chances that the PC might have problems or something like that, I want it to be perfect, that’s why I need a professional in this…

And yeah, as I had heard, I might need to reinstall the CD-Rom and Sound Card…etc
Do I?

Ok i have a few suggestions here that might help with your problem.

Try these in this order... and see if it helps. I had similar problems with Win XP and most ive managed to rectify with these steps. Most software is now compatible with XP, leaving only older hardware devices that are not supported.

1) make sure all your device drivers are fully up to date. go to the manafactures web-site and get all the appropriate drivers for win xp.

2)For the software concerned, again go to the manafacturers web site and look for updates and patches.

9 times out of 10 this will fix your problems. However if you are still having difficulty you have 2 more options

1) you can purchase a peice of software called vmware. this will allow you to run an older version of windows on top of your existing OS.. im not totally sure it applies to all OS's but i use it on mine for Windows NT.

2)The option you were talking about requires partitioning the hard drive. or if you have 2 drives making one xp the other 98..

let me know if all else fails and you want to partition the drive and put 98 on one part of it and ill talk you through it.

Hope this helps

Thanks alot Grasshopper, I've updated everything on my PC, and got most of the patches, but some stuff worked, but some didn't, that is the problem, I asked alot of my friends about what to do, they said that I'd either get Win XP Home Edition as it might help or use one of my drives for win 98, and I can see that the 98 thing is the only solution, because it can work very old games and other old programs as that I can't find the patches for them...

So, I think that I'll have to go with the win 98, I got 3 drives, C D and E, all three have almost 10-15 GB free, pretty good...

hmm ....alright... additional to GH ...sugguestions....I would add...

As you already got winXP running... then all you need now is to get win98 ... thats how I understand your situation.

So as you already have partitioned hardisk then simply insert a win98 bootable startup disk and go through installing it on another partion beside the one the XP is on...make sure you choose another one not the same.

example winXP = C ...then win98 = D

hmm before doing all that make sure you have all the drivers for win98 for your hardware. So you can complete the whole installation process instead of finding them later.

---------------------

once done .... the choice of which OS to boot from should be coming at start.

---------

if any inquires....please let us know. And tells us what have you done so far?

Exactly if you have 3 drives anyway its really easy as you dont have to partition anything.

Alright DD, I think that I had already understood everything...

As I have seen it is as easy as installing any other program, but it is win 98 not any other...

Now I got a couple of questions, might sound stupid, but I have to ask them to make sure everything goes as planned and the pc doesn't brake down...

First, when you said Win 98 Bootable Startup Disk, did you meanthe normal CD that I have? I mean is there only one Win 98 Bootable CD? Cause I have the Win 98 CD but I'm not sure if its the one...

Second, some of my friends told me that if I want to install win 98 with my XP and run it, it will not make any sound or stuff like that, as I have to do the settings for my sound card, graphic card, CD-Rom...etc Is it true?

Third, now my Win Xp is on drive C, if I install Win 98 in E, and also have files in that drive, will they work normally or will the windows erase/ or make errors in any of them?

Forth, about the 3 drives in my PC, C D and E, I will install the Win 98 in E, if I do, and run win 98, will I be able to use all the programs and stuff in Drive C and D, and will the desktop be and same and start menu?
What are the changes that might happen when I run win 98...
As I had heard, that win XP is the Adminisrator in my pc therefor I'll be able to open the win 98 files easily through it, but I cannot open or use the win XP files through win 98...
Is it True?

Fifth, once done .... the choice of which OS to boot from should be coming at start.

Are you sure that it doesn't need me to set it or something like that?

Sixth, if something went wrong in the installation or anything else with win 98, will I be able to remove it without damaging win XP, and will it affect it in anyway?

Okay, those are my questions, Thanks alot DeDe and Grasshopper!

mf_alkhalili, can i ask you some quick questions if you don't mind, (i didn't have time to even read what the other guys said, so if it was answered, then just don't get mad).

1) How many partitions does your hard drive has? (Example, C: D: , bla bla.. Only for hard drive, don't include the CD ROMS or FLOPPY drive.)

2) If you will install win98, are you going to do it while winXP is already installed?

3) I have a small tip for winXP compatibilty issue.

a) Right–click the executable or the program shortcut to the executable, and then click Properties.
b) Select the Run this program in compatibility mode check box.
c) Select an operating system that the program is compatible with.

See if that works with you.

1- I got C,D,E with almost 12 GBs on each

2-Yes, I wanna keep XP, and switch between them when I need!

3-I tried this, its the Wizard Compatability thing right? Yeah, I did it, but there is still something wrong, I can't figure it out, that why the easiest way is to install win 98 with XP...
