What do you think about the new rule!
The low about paying some fees around 5 rials when you cross the omani board!-this is for omanies!
Well this has an exeption of the people living next to the borders and as well the students that study and have to go back and forth to the place they are studying in!
This happened due to the low income of Oil! they say this will increase the income 4 to 5 millions Approximatly.
Do you think this will help ot not!

The main issue is that in Oman and because of this war, we are facing an aconomical crisis or i can say we are on the way of it.
so one of the way will be applying tax, this of course will help to recover but it is not the main solution.
I hope as asuggestion from the moderator here to move this thread to economc sabla, since it has an economical disscusion, what do you think Najah....

First of all the border crossing fee for normal cars will be 2 rials only. It's 5 rials for buses and light trucks, and 8 rials for heavy vehicles.
I think it's a reasonable amount. In fact I think the fee should be 2 rials per person, not 2 rials per vehicle. Omanis spend a big chunk of their money in the UAE and it's about time our government did something to benefit from the border crossing. 2 rials isn't a big amount. It's not unreasonable. I doubt any Omani goes to Dubai and spends less than 50 or 100 rials in their trip. The border crossing fee is insignificant in comparison.

that's not the point. it doesn't matter how insignificant the fees are.
here in Oman Oil revenues contribute more than 90% of the national income. and i only see additional fees introduced when the oil prices are sky high. i don't see any big projects to justify the huge spendings. for the past three years our budget has been based on oil price of 9-12 USD. i don't remember the oil prices going that low. it's always been around 20-25 USD.
this boarder fees is only the beginning. it wont be long until we all have to pay income taxes on our salaries. and salaries are not that great in Oman in the first place.

Big Mo,
the oil prises are getting high but the production is getting low and lower!! so mainly saying that we shouldnt place fees becuase we still have oil is not good enough for the country.
I have to agree with mux and Thug ..this 2 rials is nothing to what will be spent in Dubai .. it could be used to mainting the road and make better services.
Yes I am with the ideas and I think whoever afford to drive to Dubai (spend at least 10 rials for the petrol) could pay those extra 2 rials.

Big Mo
1) The last few budgets were based on oil prices higher than what you stated.
2) You seem to have forgotten that the present budget is based on a more realistic oil price
3) You've forgotten, or arent' aware, that Oman is presently suffering from a huge production crises which has brought our production to below 800,000 barrels per day, that the government will have to invest over 1 billion dollars in order to increase production, and that production will remain low until 2007 at the very least.
AP, Mux,
again my point is not the amount, it's the principle.
when we talk about production crises that brought our production down to 800,000 b/day why do we make sound as if our production was double that. we in Oman have only managed to have production of 970,000 to 850,000 for as long as i can remember.
don't also forget that th price of our oil has risen since late 99 because of the higher quality as a result of injecting the heavy hydrocarbons coming from the Saih Rawl plant which feeds gas to the LNG plant in Sur.
1 billion dollar seems to be a very high figure. do you know what is it for?? do you know the projects intended??? all i know is the government strugged to fund train 3 for the LNG plant and that was way below 1 billion dollars.
