View Full Version : Driving Test in Oman
What is your evaluation of ROP driving license test. Do you think it's complicated and difficult to pass ? How about the police men who are sitting next to you, are they helpfull or will record even silly mistakes to make the person do the test again and again ?
And what are the changes you would like to see if you have any ?
Finally anyone passed the test from the first time (optional question) ?
H-Highness 18-03-03, 11:23 AM I think things are better nowdays, not like 7-10 years ago. I remember before once you pass on drums and fail on slope you need to re-do the whole process again, but now I heard it has been eliminated and you don't have to do it all.
About those Policemen, it really depends, sometimes you get someone kind and helpful not to frighten you or make a big fuss about negligable mistakes and don't tell when its you unlucky day.
By the way I think I should say I was the dumbest one, I got my Driving Licence after 4 attempts. :D
I got it yesterday!!:color: :color:
After 12 tries!!:D
Arabian Princess 18-03-03, 02:10 PM can you tell us Selma the process you went through?
H-Highness 18-03-03, 02:17 PM Hehe, you guys with your 7 and 12 trials, make me feel I'm not the ONLY dumb in this world. :D
Even me I got it after 6 or 7 times !
Do you think the ROP trying to make business here, cuz I believe we have to pay 5 rials for every trial. So it means selma paid 60 rials for 12 trials !!
Yes sure..
The process was horrible.. it was like as if i had an info which was needed by the policemen, but i did not know what info that is,so I was being tortured to give it up!
you have to go there sit and wait for your turn! that was a big punishment...
Once, it was my mistake.. i entered a complete wrong way..
2 times i would not see the signs of no entry!!
Once I drove from the begining of the test till the end without putting the handbreak down!! that was the only mistake that i made:D
3 times i made mistakes at the going in round about... though the cars were far away.. but they told me to wait..
and all the other times were like questions such as how much speed limit bla bla bla... you get that wrong you fail
and most of the times they said that i was very careful so therefore I was not confident.. so they will just fail me.. for no mistake..
I felt like killing all the policemen in Oman. Plus I honestly don't think it is a good idea for the policemen to do some tricks to a student..

it is a matter of having the confidence.. I Lacked that.. and i was so scared wherenever I was with the policeman..
Navigator 18-03-03, 02:35 PM i don't remember having the test at all , though i got the license !!
Sometimes it oesn't matter how good or bad you are , it's all about good arrangment be4 hand !! few calls , and this sort of things !!
DeSerTDesTroYeR 18-03-03, 06:30 PM nice topic..icetea :)
hmm....
i had to go through it 4 times..got it on the 5th..:D
hmm....
i passed drums....and up - hill from 1st time  al7amdullah...
then....
all 4 times on the street...:angre: for such ahhh....i dont wanna remember...i will just get :duh: :D hmm...i barely remember anyway..it was like.....4 years, 1 month 4 days ago now..:) yahhhh....good old times
hmm.....what else.....thats about it.....soo...come on...whos got the highest...number..so far  :D
H-Highness come on....share with us..:)
Muscati 18-03-03, 07:15 PM I passed my first time :)
Ahhhhhh driving test, this brings back long forgotten memories!
Well I took my driving license when I was in Grade 12, I failed the drums twice, then on my third time I failed the road! You know why? Because I was sooooooooo nervous, that I couldn't even change the gears properly! 4th time, the policeman was really nice to me, he made me feel more comfortable because he was smiling and joking which made me feel better, and I passed with flying colours!
The system is good here, as far as I know, it really depends on your instructor, and how you're taught to drive, you know, you can pass your test and be a chicken on the road, or still pass but drive with more confidence! Either way you can pass, but it's the style of your driving that really counts! We have many people who pass all the time, and they're really terrible, sometimes I just wonder how they got their license!!!
Thug4Life 18-03-03, 10:14 PM I passed it in my 4th try! and all on the road!
any ways
if u think that the police regulation and tests are very tough why do I feel that the standard of driving in Oman is on the low side nowdays!
-overtaking from the right side!
-Never touch the 3rd lane or u will get many flashes behind ya from people driving 170km/hr (with no pregnancy emergency!!! or whatever!!!)
- Why we have more accidents more people die due to accidents rather than other causes in Oman!!!!!
- Most drivers are teens!!!!
would it better if they specify a higher age for u can then apply for a licence??????? say 24 or 25???
I wonder!
some sort of a new system should be applied i feel
any ideas???
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!! this ssssssssssssssoooooooooooooo funnyyyyyyy.. funnnyyyyyyyyyyyy :D:D:D:p:gap:
7 times:eek: 12 times:eek:
I'd better reassure my 2nd secondary brother.. he hates the mere mention of driving lessons.. although he failed 4 times ONLY.. he's the only one who faled these many times "in the family" and it's emabarrassing.. I'd better tell him he's better than looooooooooots of ppl..
u're so funny ppl.. al7amdulillah i don't have to embarrasse myself since I won't drive :D:p
Jumanjima 19-03-03, 03:45 AM It all depends on the policeman that you get. I had a nice policeman, although i did fail the first time (road) because he was impatient. Wanted me to turn at the right at the roundabout before the actual turning! Annnnnnd went round the shell station the wrong way
:lost: oops!
I think that the system in Oman is alright - i passed :D
The only thing that would be nice for the learners/test takers would be in my opinion either:
* Give times for people to take the test days in advance not on the day... like an appointment
* And have a room for people to wait in with A/C!!! Taking the test in summer is horrible!!! :duh:
Interesting discussion going on here :).

I agree with you that the number of accidents and violation to traffic rules increasing in Oman. The age is an important factor contributing to these problems, younge guys/girls are carelss compared to adults as they don't have responsiblilites and tend to ignore the rules around them. Athor reason is the lack of supervision from their parents.
But I've posted a question before related to this thread but didn't get any feedbac, so I will repeat it again:
Do you think the ROP trying to make business here, cuz I believe we have to pay 5 rials for every trial. So it means a person with 12 trials for example will pay 60 OR.

In my opinion I would say Yes.. it is a business..
If they were actual strict in issuing the licenses as they claim to be then the number of accidents in Oman would have dropped down.. but unfortunately the number of accidents is high...
as thugz:

They also have this new rule.. that if you pass the trial.. any delays.. you will only have a week.. any delays they will cancel your papers for the license and you will have to re do the trails again.. from the biginning
4-ever-young 19-03-03, 03:31 PM well i pased on the third try..and i failed the 1st time at the drums...second time i failed the road and i passed my 3rd time...
I think they have to be strict but where it matters...i mean the sign test was really too easy...thoes signs are really important...
ooh i failked the 1st and didnt want to set it again .......... ....... i'm scarred from accedents ....... but may be after one to two yrs i will reset it again ........:D

i hate the policeman who sits next to you and ask you to go the wrong way. that's just wrong. he shouldn't ask you to break the rules and fail you if you do so.

Good advices, but I doubt it they will provide rooms with A/C though they might provide orange juice !
The problem is you have to wait for many houres when it comes to something to deal with police (e.g renew of your licence, driving permit, etc). And in addition to that you give them alot of money every time.
LoooooOOOL
How interesting!!! :D
I got mine from the 3rd try.
Failed once on the hill!!! Grrrrr the car just stopped!!!
Secondly was a road mistake.... as he said :D
Third was a SUCCESS!!!
O yeah...... You just hope that the police man is in good mood when you are with him or her :p
Kamakazy 23-03-03, 03:26 AM i passed on the second time...
the first time i failed in the drums, as i was already out of the four drums, i was very confident (i shouldnt have been) and the front part of the car (bonnet) just rubbed on the last drum, my car was already out... too bad...
the next time i passed all, the funny part was that i was never asked about the signs!?!? another funny incedent was when i was on the slop, my left legs was shaking like anything, i wonder how i managed to balance the cluch :lost: and i was also lucky to have a new police man with me, he was nice, plus i talked to him and was funny to him too...
i belive some police men are very bad, like i know of some police men to would do one of the following:
1) not wear their seat belt YOU FAIL if you dont notice that
2) not close their door propally YOU FAIL if you dont notice that
3) hit their cap on the rear view mirrow YOU FAIL if you dont notice that
4) while driving, he would put up the hand break up just enough so the hand break light going on on the dashboard YOU FAIL if you dont notice that
i feel the point i mention above are just not fair... as for these point:
1) telling you to take a no entry
2) asking for speed limits
are fair, coz if your on the streats and do that... i wouldnt like to be near you...
as for the high number of accedents, restricting the age limit to 21 or 25 is not the solution... coz if the age limit is put to 21 we would need better transport facilities, plus this will cause more teen driving without licence...
the best solution is to put more police, cameras, radars and signs indecating any contrution of accidents ahead... maybe a radio station for traffic would be nice too...
I have a question.
If you failed 12 times, do you think that you passing the test was a fluke, ya3ni bil7adh?
And could you please call me before hitting the streets so I can stay home?
well The ROP that deals with the driving tests ... intresting ... because all what you can hear a lot of ppl is complaining about them in different ways.
I don;t know if its only me but i feel police officers are so hard on girls when they are doing their road test. Its like even if the driver is 100% sure there was no mistake she did and even the teacher would be sure of that ... the cope will always have something to say about her driving ... .
Its liike... " hell no a one would pass from her first test" I am not saying their ain;t who passed on their first test but very very very lil.
Anyway regarding that.... i feel the more the ROP fails someone for whatever stuipid reason its a very good way of getting of money from them... eseically the poor indians!!
I would love to see women copes riding with the female drivers rather than just seeind the men cope! Plus .... I don;t think the driving test in oman is hard ././ and maybe they should really change things as we tend to see a lot of accidents happinning... meaning they can come up with different other tests not just what they currently have!!

to do that you will have to give me your number...
A friend has suggested one thing..
That I should give him my a copy of DL, and then he will make many copies and distribute it to his Institute and to all his friends so as they know me.. and most important it will be as a bonus for their own safety.. so you can give me your address and i will make sure you get one copy as well...
Th other friend she said that.. by the time when I start driving on my own she will warn everyone thru FM to clear the road or to stay at home safely....
so if you don't get the copy of my d/l then you will hear a warning from FM...
So relaxe!!!
Thank you Selma!
Have you ever thought of attaching a siren to your car, similar to the police cars or the ones that you hear just before an air raid, so even inocent pedestrians will be on the look out.
Trauma
I will be spoiling my car's appearance..
Unless if the police decide to give me one of their cars.. and ofcourse painted in red....
No problem,,,
Don Khaled 24-03-03, 11:46 PM I believe ROP are doing an excellent job at the driving test. It's not fair to give anyone the license just like that, they have to make sure you drive well. But there is JUST one thing which I don't like and I wish they change. In USA normally, you can do as many tries for the driving test, but when you pass you JUST pay one fee. While in Oman, EACH time you do the driving test, you have to pay a fee.
I personally past from the 2nd time. Though the 1st time I went for driving test, it was perfect with no mistakes! Oh well, atleast I got in the 2nd time.
pharmacy113 25-03-03, 12:53 AM Somehow driving test should be changed. Because
I find alot of ppl (especially female) who have lisnece
and don't know how to drive.
btw, I got it from the 1'st time.
I agree with Don Khalid..
That the test is fair.. and again YES .. paying one fee at the end would be fair enough to everyone ..specially that people won't feel that the police is doing so just to earning revenew out of it because people after couple of tries the tend to forget that it's done for the safty of everyone..
I got my license in my 3rd try
Morbid_Angel69 26-03-03, 06:57 PM :D My friend from school passed the first time! :)
Morbid_Angel69 26-03-03, 07:03 PM  I think they should allow people to learn how to drive in their own cars though...they could put an "L" plate on the back of the car which means the person is LEARNING...by this way people can feel much more comfortable and get adapted to the care that they will be driving in the future.
Also im gonna start lessons soon, and i was wondering about the seats in these cars...are they adjustable because i know people who have learnt how to drive but struggled either because they were too tall and so the stearing wheel hits their legs, or they were slightly overweight and so they couldnt learn comfortably....!
Thug4Life 26-03-03, 10:17 PM U guys know that those who r speeding more than mM i think 20km/hr above the speeding limits and gets caught put in jail for one day then pays the bail???? correct me if am wrong??
if thats true....ITS wonderful....!
another thing: if u r caught overtaking from the rightside...Jailed as well!!!!!
I like this!!
i might take my driving test when i'm back home ...... but not with any foringers ....... i will let my bro or dad give to me ..... if they can .......:color:
Assalamu Alikum..
well Thug4Life I believe its 40/km/hr over the speed limits and not 20.. as far as i remember..
Thug4Life 27-03-03, 04:29 PM Thanx Ayah
what u guys think about this law?
Well thug, I think it's good, but do they actually do this? I mean, many times I see guys speeding and overtaking, but are never caught! I'm not saying that I don't speed, but I don't speed THAT much...I try to stay within the normal limits unless I'm in a hurry, which is bad, I know, but at least I don't go around scaring people in the road like guys do! I mean sometimes they put you under tension, when they stick to the back of your car, why can't they just wait for a sec for you to give them way?!!! I hate it when they do that, but still they're never caught!

:eyes: only 20?? or 40?? No way this is un faire I think more than 60 Km/h is much better & suitable 4 us:wink: .
Kamakaze, u have shared some really good insights...........
I passed the drum on the 1st try but flunked the slope twice.....
waiting 4 my next turn.....
Folks those who have failed in the road test, it would be great if u can share some tips as kamakaze has.
Miss_Crocodilo 20-07-08, 07:13 PM Interesting thread.
My first try (drums) is one day away. Thank you for making me more nervous lol.
I passed after the 2nd try ;)
All the officers that had to examine me were flirts to be honest. Specially the one from the signs exam.
Dam3eti 20-07-08, 08:43 PM I passed the 3rd time. The 1st time the police man asked me to go shamaal and I didn't know where that is so he failed me which I think was unfair. The 2nd time I nearly crashed a motorcyclist. The 3rd time I think I made a mistake but I passed lol.
The test itself isn't complicated. But there are two problems:
1. Where can you get a copy of the "Omani Highway Code"? There isn't one! Which means that the traffic rules are pretty random i.e. based on what the guy doing the test thinks they should be. Even the Police couldn't explain to you the proper way to drive across a roundabout. No wonder there are so many accidents in Oman. There really needs to be a proper published set of traffic rules so people can know what is the right way and the wrong way - ROP included. It's a mess.
2. The Police who do the driving tests ask for bribes, especially from foreigners. All the time. If you pay, you pass, if not, you don't. Simple as that. I'm not saying all policemen are corrupt, of course most aren't. But in that department it seems to be normal, which is a disgrace. It would help if policemen were paid a decent salary - what they get is an insult.
 I think they should allow people to learn how to drive in their own cars though...they could put an "L" plate on the back of the car which means the person is LEARNING...by this way people can feel much more comfortable and get adapted to the care that they will be driving in the future.
You are allowed to do that, but you have to get your car registered first, & you'll be asked to modify it so that it's appropriate for teaching, i.e. add an set of breaks at th passenger's side, etc.
squinty 21-07-08, 08:28 PM Even me I got it after 6 or 7 times !
Do you think the ROP trying to make business here, cuz I believe we have to pay 5 rials for every trial. So it means selma paid 60 rials for 12 trials !!
if we fail. we pay 10 r.o.
and yes they want to get fast money from us.
before if you did a mistake and fixed it quickly the policeman takes it that you know what you did wrong.
now they fail you without question.
i failed mine, why?
because the policeman SAID i was going to hit the pavement.
which i wasn't because i know how to drive and he just made me drive for less then 2 minutes.
and i waited over 3 hours for my turn.
If anyone here is from the police then i am sorry but what they are doing is wrong and they should change these stupid rules like:
"1 mistake = fail"
i heard a lot of "playful girls" passed by "flirting"
tell me that is wrong please.
and for the guys to pass i heard some either "bribed" the policeman or used his connections to get the license.
:bored:
Somehow driving test should be changed. Because
I find alot of ppl (especially female) who have lisnece
and don't know how to drive.
yeah, poor "female" wasn't born to be a driver!!
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!! this ssssssssssssssoooooooooooooo funnyyyyyyy.. funnnyyyyyyyyyyyy :D:D:D:p:gap:

but this time i had to reply :)
when i read this now it's like :omg: :D coz i have my licence now .. u can't expect what is going to happen.. :os
Such an old thread!
How are you floret?
NicoBambi 22-07-08, 10:49 PM I passed everything one the first time. And believe me, it's more difficult here than in Oman.. lol
To me, in Oman, they don't know how to drive :XD:
FAITH86 22-07-08, 11:18 PM ^ true :p
My younger sis has failed her third driving test, thu she drove many times all alone.
Superbia 23-07-08, 02:50 AM I think that it's quite fair enough. Well, at least the police man I had to deal with was really nice to me, despite the fact that I crashed right into the drums, because I've mistaken the accelarator with the break :inno:
NiGhTFaCe 23-07-08, 03:28 AM And believe me, it's more difficult here than in Oman.. lol
You have never taken the test here, so you never know ;)
Passing the test from the first, second, or whatever the number of trials, or lets say even passing the test doesn't really tell if you are that good on the road on or not.
The policeman who was with me on my first try was a bit stuck up he was looking for any silly reason to make me flunk the test. The try was in Ruwi I didn't practice well in that area so I ended up failing. Second try was in Qurum the officer was nice but I made a stupid mistake and I failed the test. I finally passed the road test on the third try and the police officer was super nice! I guess I was just lucky. But I did drive well and I wasn't nervous!
Oh and I don't have a "wasta" license. I worked hard to get mine lol
I wonder how many people will be honest and say they gave the policeman money to pass the test...or anyone who refused to pay and got failed?
I know at least two people who were asked to pay, one Omani and one foreign. The foreigner refused to pay and left without his licence. The Omani paid and got it without even finishing the test.
And of course there are others who just get their licence in the mail...but that's a different subject

I never came anyone who paid for getting their driving license, I just hope you don't generalize this!
No, and I wouldn't generalise about all policemen either. Most I met are very decent and professional. But it does happen, and especially in that department...but I guess it's embarrassing to admit you bribed someone. Who knows..maybe they weeded out these rotten apples by now?
I just landed in oman a few days back, seeing all this i am getting little bit scared, can some one suggest me a good training centre in capital area.
^ true :p
My younger sis has failed her third driving test, thu she drove many times all alone.
 this is one of the family secrets, allah yahdeech..
It's really difficult to pass the test cuz of the policemen :( I just got sick of training and failing :( Now you need to wait for at least 25 days after failing to make another test
Nikki, if ur seeking for a female driving teacher it's really difficult to find one at this time of year cuz all the 12th grade graduates and uni students take driving lessons now.. My driving teacher is traveling for a vacation and I got no one to train me or even to reserve for a driving test :(
NicoBambi 23-07-08, 10:51 PM You have never taken the test here, so you never know ;)
I'm saying this according to what some people told me. Plus your system is quite easy going.
Here, we got a licence we points. 6 for the 3 first years then 12.
Don't put your indicator, if a policeman caught you, he'll take you off 3 points plus 90€ (if paid within 3 days). Don't respect a 'stop' = 4 points. Don't put your seat belt = 3 points. Alcohol = 6 points. And the list goes on..
In Oman, it looks like indicators don't even exist lol :hyper: not to talk about 'stops' :p
And, manual cars ? LAZY BUTT :p (and the so called traffic is not an excuse) :p :p
I can use my French licence to drive in Oman :p
NiGhTFaCe 23-07-08, 11:14 PM but I guess it's embarrassing to admit you bribed someone. Who knows..maybe they weeded out these rotten apples by now?
See you are kinda generalizing it again!

NicoBambi 23-07-08, 11:21 PM Check out the first sentence. ;)
NiGhTFaCe 23-07-08, 11:23 PM Then maybe you should read more of the members replies here who faced a problem getting it from the first trial ;)
NicoBambi 23-07-08, 11:56 PM I'm not replying to them but to you :D
But, as this someone told me, it not about your skills but more about your luck. As said above as well. :)
B S Al Hassani 24-07-08, 12:26 AM What is your evaluation of ROP driving license test.
Barely passed them...
Do you think it's complicated and difficult to pass ?
Uhmm, for me it was...
How about the police men who are sitting next to you, are they helpfull or will record even silly mistakes to make the person do the test again and again ?
Well, they were fine, not helpfull though...
Finally anyone passed the test from the first time (optional question) ?
Drums.... from the first test.
Road.... the third test.
I'm not generalising Nightie, I've said in every post that most policemen I've met are straight. But I also know personally people who have had to pay a bribe to pass their test, before they even get in the car. So I'm asking if anyone else has come across this, or maybe whoever it is that was taking the bribes has been removed now?
NiGhTFaCe 25-07-08, 03:18 AM I'm not replying to them but to you :D
But, as this someone told me, it not about your skills but more about your luck. As said above as well. :)
I said read their replies, you don't reply them. You can't really say I am that skilled so I can pass & yeah it can be luck actually, if the policeman closes his eyes for your mistakes ;)
Then these are rare cases of what you speak.
I would hope they are rare cases...and that's what I'm asking. But I wonder if any others came across it?
