Not so long ago, a young mother, Torpeka, was shot repeatedly by the Taliban while rushing her seriously ill toddler to a doctor. Veiled as the law requires, she was spotted by a teenage Taliban guard, who tried to stop her because she shouldn't have left her home. Afraid her child might die if she were delayed, Torpeka kept going. The guard aimed his Kalashnikov machine-gun and fired several rounds directly at her. She was hit, but didn't die on the spot, as she could have. Instead, Afghans watching the incident in the crowded marketplace intervened, and Torpeka and her child received prompt medical attention. When her family later complained to the Taliban authorities, they were informed that it was the injured woman's fault. She had no right being out in public in the first place.

On January 12, armed forces of the Government of Sudan (GOS) enslaved 103 women and children in coordinated raids on African villages in South Sudan. This is the second slave raid reported by local officials this month. News of the raids comes from local Sudanese leaders, through the Swiss-based human rights group, Christian Solidarity International (CSI).

Women and young girls are reporting to CSI that they are routinely gang-raped -- during the raids, on the long trek north, and later, when they are already in bondage and serving masters. Their testimonies are horrifying: Aluel Mangong Deng said, "They came one after another" Also to other women and even young girls. [The trek] took 30 days' This kind of rape happened just about every day." Arek Garang Peath said, "I was given to Abdullah. He encouraged his sons to rape me. All of them did. So did their friends. When I tried to resist, I was brutally beaten."

The raids are part of a religious war waged on the mostly Christian villages in South Sudan by the National Islamic Front regime in Khartoum.

In the far north of North Korea, in remote locations not far from the borders with China and Russia, a gulag not unlike the worst labor camps built by Mao and Stalin in the last century holds some 200,000 men, women and children accused of political crimes. A month-long investigation by NBC News, including interviews with former prisoners, guards and U.S. and South Korean officials, revealed the horrifying conditions these people must endure — conditions that shock even those North Koreans accustomed to the near-famine conditions of Kim Jong Il’s realm.

as many as 2 million people have died of starvation while Kim has amassed the world’s largest collection of Daffy Duck cartoons.

Under a directive issued by Kim’s father, North Korea’s founder, Kim Il Sung, three generations of a dissident’s family can be jailed simply on the basis of a denunciation. Forced abortions are carried out on pregnant women so that another generation of political dissidents will be “eradicated.”

A recent report by Lawyers for Tibet found that Tibetan children in
Chinese-occupied Tibet suffer torture and detention for even minor
"political" offenses. Children are detained in deplorable conditions,
often without notice to their families, and held for months or even
years without a trial or access to a lawyer. Most Tibetan children also
lack access to an education because of the absence of schools and
teachers, and high fees. Those that can afford the high school fees find
a curriculum geared toward Chinese cultural assimilation. Access to
healthcare for Tibetan families, especially in rural areas, is severely
limited and the infant mortality rate for Tibetans triple the national
average for China.

Atrocities continue in the war-torn country of Sudan, and the latest has been caught on tape. Using an old video camera, a Sudanese student managed to capture the aftermath of an air strike on an elementary school.

On Feb. 8, Sudanese government forces dropped four bombs on the Holy Cross Catholic school in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. A teacher and 14 children were killed in the attack; 17 others were injured and 10 children are reported missing. The planes also dropped bombs on villages nearby.

http://www.mcjonline.com/news/00/20000218d.htm

BLUE NILE REGION, SUDAN, September 21, 2000 (Web Today)—Despite promises to discontinue civilian attacks, the Muslim Sudanese government of Khartoum has staged a fresh attack on a Catholic-run hospital in the primarily Christian-held South, just days before the start of peace talks in the war-torn region..

The Islamic Internet service, ArabicNews.com, reports two fatalities in Sunday’s air attack on women and children waiting in line for medical treatment. There were no estimates on the number of civilians injured during the assault.

The Catholic hospital was reportedly destroyed. Those wounded were taken for treatment to a Red Cross facility near the Sudan/Kenya border.

The Muslim report linked the raid to a recent UN decision to resume international food shipments to those dwelling in areas of South Sudan controlled by rebel forces in that country’s decades-long civil war. ArabicNews.com says the first of those UN relief flights arrived Monday in the South Sudanese region known as Baher El-Gazelle. The World Food program has pledged to deliver 196 tons of food and other humanitarian supplies to the city of Oeil.

UN relief flights had been held up for at least four months, allegedly due to the lack of secure landing and off-loading sites. Christian sources close to the conflict report no substantial international aid has gotten through to those suffering in the South for the last few years.

American massacre in afghanistan
In the wake of the battle for Konduz, American military forces participated in the armed assault and killing of several hundred Taliban prisoners in the fortress of Qala-i-Janghi. The American John Walker Lindh was one of 86 Taliban fighters who survived the massacre by hiding in tunnels beneath the fort .

The film sets out to demonstrate that following the events at Qala-i-Janghi, in collaboration with its Afghan ally General Rashid Dostum, the American army command was complicit in the killing of a further 3,000 prisoners who were separated out from the total of 8,000 POWs and transported to a prison compound in the town of Shibarghan.

Prisoners were shipped to Shibarghan in closed containers lacking any ventilation. Local Afghan truck drivers were commandeered to transport between 200 and 300 prisoners in each container. One of the drivers participating in the convoy relates that an average of between 150 and 160 died in each container in the course of the trip.

The Cheju 4.3 massacre is a horrific genocide of 30,000 innocent civilians on Cheju-do between 1948 and 1949. During this time, fully ten percent of the island's total population of 300,000 were massacred by the Korean police, army and anti-communist groups reporting to the U.S. Military Government in Korea (USMGIK).
The US Military Government ruled South Korea from September 1945 until August 15, 1948. It was the government of Korea both in name and fact. Therefore, the U.S. bears direct responsibility for the Cheju uprising on April 3, 1948. Even after the Republic of Korea was established, the US military controlled the Korean army.

Cheju April 3rd Massacre. American soldiers killed hundreds of refugees, many of them women and children, who were trapped beneath the Nogun-ri bridge between the advancing North Korean troops and the digged in American troops. One American Veteran recalled his captain as saying: "The hell with all those people. Let's get rid of all of them." A former machine gunner said - "We just annihilated them."

There were some terrible incidents that took place toward the end of the war, particularly in the first brigade headed by a colonel named John Lemoine, who was very close to McCaffrey, and in one case, some soldiers stopped as many as 350, 400 prisoners, some on a marked hospital bus marked with the crescent, the equivalent of a red cross sign here, they radioed what they were doing to the troops behind them, and they got them in line, gave them their food. They drove off.

Behind them came a squadron, 14 or 15, 13 maybe what they call Bradley — sort of like tanks, fighting machines with machine guns capable of firing several hundred rounds a minute. Boom, they open up on all the prisoners as the kids — as the first group was leaving.

It was a horrible mess, and afterward, somebody complained, and they began an investigation.

So when a CNN broadcast last month accused the US army of using nerve gas during the Vietnam War, all hell broke loose. The allegations focussed on an incident which occurred in Laos in September 1970. In the programme, former members of the Studies and Observation Group (SOG) -- a secret US army outfit -- confessed to dropping sarin on Vietcong fighters and even suggested that non-combatants might have been gassed. The programme featured corroborative statements by Admiral Thomas Moorer, the US armed forces chief at the time, and the evidence of other retired officers who declined to be identified.

That the US deliberately killed a large number of civilians in Vietnam is an established fact, even if the details have subliminally been erased from public memory by decades of official amnesia, psychological denial and filmic distortion. But while its use of napalm and Agent Orange is well-known, no one had ever accused Washington of using nerve gas.

http://www.refuseandresist.org/resist_this/072498timesindiaed.html

And the result of exposing american war crimes.....

CNN's chairman issued an abject apology for having cast aspersions on the US military. However, the programme's producers, Ms April Oliver and Mr Jack Smith, stood by their story and were summarily fired while an executive producer was forced to resign.

Army Confirms G.I.'s in Korea Killed Civilians

By ELIZABETH BECKER

WASHINGTON, Jan. 11--After a yearlong review, the Army officially acknowledged today that American soldiers shot and killed unarmed Korean civilians near the village of No Gun Ri in the early days of the Korean War, but officials said the deaths were a result of confusion and even fear, and were not deliberate.

President Clinton then offered his regrets for the deaths of the Koreans, who were shot after fleeing the advance of the North Korean Army, but his statement fell short of the apology many Koreans have demanded.

Not a massacre, but squashing a prison revolt. Saying massacre makes it sound like US forces lined up prisoners against a wall and shot them. In fact, the prisoners were fighting ...and lost.

Accusation challenged and dismissed.

I find it notable that you have to go back 55 years, to a period just after the biggest war of the last century and leading into teh Cold War to find "an American atrocity" - even though the link to US forces is tentative at best.

Cheju uprising.

Uprising.

Not justifying the killing of civilians, but one should note that there was an uprising. What kind ? What for ?

These questions are not answered. Perhaps because answering them would make the incident appear less ... clear, and shift some of the blame to the uprising's leaders.

You haven't collected evidence for war crimes.

You have simply surrounded 2 well know examples:

Nogun-ri (1950)
Mi Lai (1969)

with more recent articles containing unsubstantiated accusations. It's a common way of adding credibility to accusations - surround them with truth and hope that they will be accepted as truth as a result.

Squash = end through overwhelming force.

Civillians get killed during wars. The difference is that some cultures/governments care about that and try to minimize casualities within the constraints of accomplishing the mission, others are less concerned. War crimes are committed when one doesn't care about civillians, or actively pursues them as targets.

Seymour Hersh is not a Zionist. He's anti-American and a bad journalist. "Seymour Hersh, ... has a long record of making unsubstantiated allegations and using sources that have later been exposed as unreliable".
