MoonChild 24-02-03, 06:37 PM I am a typical dumb American, and can only speak English. I studied German and Russian in school but could never get the hang of it- guess I just don't have the "gift" - or wasn't properly exposed as a child (not many chances in everyday life in Ohio:rolleyes: ).
Heck, half the time I can't understand English when spoken to me (these country Virginia accents!!!!:duh: ).
I got fairly good at reading and writing Russian, but didn't keep up with it.
Wanderer recently bought us software that promises to teach "101" languages - at least some simple travel phrases. I will start with German, Spanish, and (of course) Arabic :)

Arabian Princess 17-09-08, 01:50 AM I guess I'll have to read about the history of Oman to figure out the Urdu, Baluchi, Swahili, and Farsi connection.
Oman was an emipre back in the old days that extended from east africa (zanzibar specificly) in the west to Jawader and bandar Abbass in the east. This allowed Omanis to travel there and live there. After the Omani rule was over there, they came back to mainland with these languages.

I understood that! It's because the words in bold are the same in (or are similar to) Balochi, so I was able to make out what you were saying (Kinda).
When I watched Kite Runner I found out Afghani was even more similar to Balochi than Farsi.
The bullies in the movie went "Gemesh Kah" ... the subtitles said: Forget it ... but it actually means something like 'Fe setteeen dahya= let them go to hell' :p
baa7ith 17-09-08, 06:34 AM So...do you mind explaining to me how you speak Baluchi? Is one of your parents Baluch? How common are Baluchi, Swahili, etc. in Oman? Kite Runner was in Dari...I don't think it had any Pashto in it. I thought it sounded exactly like Farsi. But, my Farsi isn't that good, so I don't know. : ) Does Baluchi have an alphabet? I read an article that said they are "working on one," then I remember a guy emphatically corrected me when I brought it up and said they have one...maybe he said they even have a newspaper in Baluchi. So, I don't know anymore. I really like languages, so I'm interested to know. I know that Ibadhis have some connections in Zanzibar and stuff like that, but I've never researched these ancient Omani trade connections and stuff like that, it's really interesting that the people there speak so many languages. Do you hear and see these others a lot in public, or is it mainly Arabic and English? Thanks. :)
UmKhalid 17-09-08, 06:48 AM Both parents are of Balochi origin, before it used to be rare that people marry from outside the family and so most of my family are Baloch.
It wasn't Afghani?! :o And I was so happy that I could understand! ... Oh well ... :(
Balochi isn't a written language, they either write it in Latin letters or Farsi letters (Would love to learn so I could read Balochi poems, it's rare to find their poems in Latin letters).
They have Balochi newspapers, radio and TV channels aired in Balochi (The Language but not the letters), they don't have their own letters :os ...
In Oman many people speak Swahili and Balochi in public. I don't understand Swahili, but with Balochi it's fun to hear people speaking about me thinking that I don't understand what they're saying :p
baa7ith 17-09-08, 06:59 AM Well, I don't think there's an "Afghani" language. :) There is Dari, which is basically a dialect of Farsi, that is spoken in Kabul and the northern parts of the country, and there is Pashto, which is also spoken in the capital, in the southern parts of the country, and is the official language of the government. Most educated Afghans speak both, if not more like another local language, Russian, Urdu, or Arabic. Also, Tajik, which is basically like Dari/Farsi is also spoken in the north along with Uzbek. And of course there are many, many regional languages like Nooristani, etc. However, Kite Runner was in Dari, and honestly I think it sounded a lot like Farsi. Tehrani Farsi was in vogue in Kabul back in the 1970s among the middle-upper class who read Iranian literature, watched Iranian films, etc. So it might be that the Dari in the film was a bit Persianized to reflect this. However, any Farsi speaker can understand Dari and vice versa.
baa7ith:
Baluchistan is just on the other side of the Strait of Hormuz from Oman, you know. There are Arabs and Baluch on the "wrong" side both ways...and that acts as a draw for more, I guess...
baa7ith 17-09-08, 07:09 AM Hm yeah that's true. Interesting! I saw a nice photo from a beach in Baluchistan. :P It was like completely desert and sand dunes and then...the ocean. I saw a photo of some Baluchi tribesmen too, they had braided hair down to their shoulders. I read a hadith once that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also had his hair similar to this. Very interesting!
UmKhalid 17-09-08, 07:19 AM http://cache.eb.com/eb/image?id=64597&rendTypeId=4
That's interesting, if it was in the Southern part of the country I might say it's close to Balochistan and that's why I understood ... but up North? ... I'm wondering how come I understood it then ... :os ...
But anyway it's cool that I understand a bit of Dari :p
baa7ith 17-09-08, 07:25 AM http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c8/Map_of_Languages_(in_Districts)_in_Afghanistan.jpg/350px-Map_of_Languages_(in_Districts)_in_Afghanistan.jpg

This second one says that Tajik (which is Dari/Farsi basically), Pashto, and Baluch are all Persian languages. And Persian languages are Indo-European (not Semitic like Arabic)...which means they all share similar characteristics. So, maybe they have similar words and phrases. Is Baluch verb structure easier than Arabic? Because Farsi is much easier for sure. : )
UmKhalid 17-09-08, 07:34 AM Well one easy thing about Baluchi is that it's not ... gendered ... not sure if it's even a word, but as in there's no feminine/masculine.
Nend (m)
Nend (f) ... means Sit.
Much easier than Arabic, but Fus7aa Arabic is more beautiful
Jihad4Truth 17-09-08, 09:09 AM Yo, sprekenzie English?
I hate to admit it, but I can only speak one language. Yeah, I am pretty typical. But lucky for me, it's the one that is understood in most places.

sameerb1 17-09-08, 10:03 AM Well one easy thing about Baluchi is that it's not ... gendered ... not sure if it's even a word, but as in there's no feminine/masculine.

Well in a way its easier balushi for not having feminine/masculine things, but again, we have a word for everything like in english the word "wear" is used for everything, shoes, cloths glasses etc. in balushi its different for everything as in for shoes "Padaka" and cloths "gwara kan" so on...very easy yet a lil complicated

And Persian languages are Indo-European (not Semitic like Arabic)...which means they all share similar characteristics. So, maybe they have similar words and phrases. Is Baluch verb structure easier than Arabic? Because Farsi is much easier for sure. : )
i guess ya...as i could catch some words from afghani and balushi is almost same as farsi...
quiet interestingly i found some words of spanish same as of balushi as in pagar etc
FAITH86 17-09-08, 11:47 AM Both parents are of Balochi origin, before it used to be rare that people marry from outside the family and so most of my family are Baloch.
It wasn't Afghani?! :o And I was so happy that I could understand! ... Oh well ... :(
Balochi isn't a written language, they either write it in Latin letters or Farsi letters (Would love to learn so I could read Balochi poems, it's rare to find their poems in Latin letters).
Farsi letter are typically the same as the Arabic letters, there're only three additional letters:
1- The arabic J with three dots instead of one dot "pronounced Cha"
2- The Arabic B with three dots beneath instead of one "pronounced Pah"
3- The Arabic Z with three dots instead of one "pronounced somehow like Jah"
UmKhalid 17-09-08, 12:03 PM Well in a way its easier balushi for not having feminine/masculine things, but again, we have a word for everything like in english the word "wear" is used for everything, shoes, cloths glasses etc. in balushi its different for everything as in for shoes "Padaka" and cloths "gwara kan" so on...very easy yet a lil complicated
It's the same case in Arabic! :p
See, we have: انتعل
انتعل from نعل (Slipper)
Padaka from Paad (Foot)
Then we have:[B] البس
البس from لباس (clothes)
Guraaka is also only said for Clothes.

Too bad I don't know anything about my mother tongue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobiin_language), which is not Arabic-based. My father speaks my mother tongue fluently. My mother claims that she understands everything in it but cannot speak it. My grandmother almost doesn't know Arabic and only speaks in this language. Our generation who grew up in the capital city or outside the country know nothing about it, unfortunately.
baa7ith 18-09-08, 06:27 PM So, how many generations did your family live in Oman, yet not speak Arabic? Would it have been possible to live in 18th century Oman yet not speak Arabic? Or did you family recently come to Oman?

If this question was directed to me, I'm not Omani. The language I was talking about was not originated in Oman. Rather in North Sudan/South Egypt.

Pls make me understand this, thanks
A "mother tongue" is the traditional language of one's ancestors, both male and female.
Amjay's "mother tongue" is not Arabic, but Nubian or 'Nobiin'.
Amjad himself didn't live in the countryside, so he didn't learn to speak it.
But his father speaks it fluently.
All that is just on the off chance that you weren't making a joke! :p

I am confused now. So it's wrong if I said Arabic is my mother tongue? My ancestors didn't speak it.

What's the difference between a Mother Tongue and a First Language?
Your mother tongue is your native language, the one you grew up with, feel most comfortable with, and speak the best. I have never heard another meaning. So yes, Arabic is your mother tongue, English is my mother tongue. Same as saying, "Lughatil umm."
