I have a silly question..
Sorry for that..
But i was just wondering is it a rule in Oman to have certain colors for houses Like : white,light gray, cream and so?!
Or you can paint your home RED or BLue or GReen!?

There are laws regarding the proper colors that you are allowed to use. I'm sure about this for a fact.
What that laws are ?!

I dont know what the rules are but I would change the colour of my home every few years.:D

Yaqeen, "proper colors". who decides what's proper????? your proper will differ from mine. anyways the answer to the question is yes there are rules set by our "great" municipality who decides what's proper and what's not. as for individual choice, well we don't have any.

blue, green, red, are you gonna paint a rainbow on your house? you have no chance with those colours.

I think this law is in certain areas such as al qurum beach where all houses should be white. Other than that I definatly saw differnt color houses such as pink and yellow!!
If any law is put regarding colors of houses I am sure it is because of the oerall look of the city. If you really like a certain color, you can paint your hosue from inside!!

There are few colors which are approved, but what I can see that most people prefer white color.

yes there surely is a law and for once i am glad about that...cause i am sure we would have very colorful houses...a friend of mine painted her house pink but quite a dark shade and they were fined!! unless they change it to another color !!

Actually if u wanna paint ur house something other than white or cream, u have to get authurization from the muscat muncipality. We had an insident like that with one of our twin villas but the color is approved. The worse part is that they could actually say NO.

Did u guys ever think of the reasons why?!!

Maybe colours that are too dark would absurb more heat,,, and i dont think that its funny in a hot country like Oman!!! :(

Or maybe it would spoil the patren ,, all houses are light colours and suddenly u see a navy blue house or a hot red house??!@!! what the!!!

Could u think of any other reasons ,,,, or does any one know the real reason behind this?

Sure yeah there r laws regarding this in some regions, even if u r making a kind of decoration on ur home...... it shouldn't be of that odd color concerning the surroundings :D

Believe me ppl can do it here. Can't u c those cars
with falsh colors. Sometimes I even have to wear sun-glasses

Well yess sure i thank god for the rules thats upon those scaryy colors but what about those calm ones!

I don't like it. Sorry but I think people should be free to chose what color they're house is not the government.

Oman is so boring, all's you see is white and very light/pale shades. What would it hurt to have a little color?!

anyways.. i agree that everyone should be free to paint his house whatever color he wants..but again..there should be some restrictions.

yes, there are certain rules in painting houses, but those rules are not pervaded every where, i think just in certain places in muscat and some citles such us Al Qurm, As Seeb, Sohar, Hai al shatti in Salalah, but u might find pink or even red houses in ja'alan, it's not a problem for the municipality to find such house in some places, but of course it's a big trouble to find BLACK :D house in Muscat

i think that good as we are in hot and sunny country

i think the new rules is to paint new houses only White paint !! because where ever u see new houses u see them WHILTE !!!!

I'm conflicted when it comes to these rules. It's weird not having the right to choose the color of your own house. But then again, when I'm in other countries and I see neighborhoods filled with houses painted in weird and conflicting colors the uniformity of colors in Muscat makes sense to me.

Still, given a choice I think I'd choose for people to have more freedom in painting their houses. In the US neighbors have the right to veto their neighbors' choice of colors by complaining to the city council. Unfortunately in Oman we don't even have a city council.

Last year my mother decided to paint the house pink. We were all against it but she went ahead anyhow. We got a warning from the Muscat Municipality while the house was still being painted and she had to abandon her color choice. I guess sometimes it's good to have stupid rules. :)

I mean i dont think there is any crazy person who would go and paint his house in a black color!
Atleast the restriction can be in those an realistic colors that some "ubnormal" people might do!
but for those light ones i dont understand why cant someone do what he likes in his property..

well as the members above did say that there are certain rules to do with chosing the colours that u want to paint ur house......

i think it goes with the area u r in, as the matter of fact taht now days the government are trying to build up some certain places to make them a place of getting attraction, and they wont want any strange coulors to be affecting the look of the whole area........


i think they r only allowing the pale or light colours to be applied on the houses.......or cream,brown and white.........but this is more to do with the outlook of the hosue than the inlook of it......


i am with the rules, but at the same time i think if they give some chances for the people to choose what ever they want, even if it was a small place in the out look of the house to be painted according to their own wish and choice.


well my mum is crazy about painting the house[mashallah 3aliha].........

since the house have been built for about 8 years now[mashallah] the house had been repainted for about 7 times.the first 3-4 times with the same colour and the 5th and the 6th time were in different colour and now the last time ina different colour...........and she is soo creative mashallah when it comes to colours , she can mix any colour to creat a new colour, that suits her:)


there was a story ,when my mum changed the colour of the huse to be a light peach colour.......and there was someone who was building his house not far from ours, and when ever he passes by our house he just looks at the colour and one day he came with one of the experties of one of the painting company and knock on our door, and he asked my little brother for the person who had chosen the colour of the house my brother was confused and he called my mum, and the man was asking my mum about the colour....the other guy[experties] said to mum that they have been trying for a whole week to find this colour , so they were asking her about the regestration number of the colour.....my mum was smilling at them and she said well u will never find it registered..and they were both loke this :eek:...
and she told them taht she had been mixing 2 colours in different propotions to give the colour that she wanted it to end up with.........

and the guy[exp.] told my mum that if it was not regts. then this colour is against the Law.mum said the law says for us to paint with light colours it doe snot say that they are against mixing colours....and he said then he will have to report it, mum told him he can go and report to whom ever he wants and she is not going to change the colour :D,,,,,which she did not :p

till when she decided to change the colour again before 3 months to a different colour.....but only the indoor, and the out door had been kept as it is.......
no one came to complaine or to check....and the man who wanted his house painted as ours went along and did it but it did not come in the same way as our house :D

But ... I believe a person should have the right to do 'whatever' he/she wants with his/her property.

Otherwise our beautiful Houses in Oman would look like Pakistan Buses where they have been painted with all colours of the world, and the all looks ugly :D :color:

Municipality has selected set of 12 Light colours, and you only choice from those and they are all good one and reasonable,
dont tell me you need to have red colour like British Houses which look like ghost city:wave:

I would like to paint my house black or red.... I think the house would look just great... but of course i don't think these colors are among the colors allowed from the goverment... :rolleyes:
